PhD Position in Theoretical Population Genetics, Univ. of Vienna

PhD Position in Theoretical Population Genetics at the University of Vienna

The mathematics and biosciences group (MaBS, homepage www.mabs.at) at the University of Vienna is looking for a strong and highly motivated candidate for a PhD position in evolutionary modeling and statistical data analysis.

Research environment: Vienna is not only one of the world's most liveable cities, but also offers an excellent research environment and currently develops into one of the main centers in evolutionary research in Europe. The position will be located at the Max F. Perutz Laboratories, part of Vienna's strong bioscience campus.

Project: Due to modern methods of high-throughput sequencing, huge amounts of DNA sequence data from population samples ("polymorphism data") are available today. Interpretation of these data is an important task for theoreticians. In the project, we will develop novel methods to detect so-called footprints of selection in DNA
polymorphism data. These footprints can be used to describe the pattern of recent adaptations on a genome. We will particularly focus on effects of population structure and spatially variable selection on genetic footprints. We will use mathematical methods based on stochastic processes (coalescent theory) and extensive computer simulations. The project is part of an international DFG-research group "Natural Selection in Structured Populations" in collaboration with groups in Evolutionary Biology at the University of Munich, and Mathematics at the University of Freiburg.

Conditions: The position is for three years, salary is according to the FWF standard rates for PhD students in Austria. The starting date is flexible (November 08 or later).

Application: We are looking for a candidate with a strong background in quantitative methods (analytical or computational modeling or data analysis) and interest in evolutionary research. Applicants should have a Master / Diploma degree in natural science (e.g. biology or physics), mathematics, or bioinformatics . Programming skills are highly appreciated. The working language in the group is English. German skills are not essential. The reviewing process will start in mid October 2008 and will continue until the position is filled. Applications should include a CV, letter of interest, and the names and email addresses of two potential referees. Applications and informal inquiries should be sent (preferably as a single pdf) to
Joachim Hermisson (joachim.hermisson[ AT]univie. ac.at).

Hello to all,

The association Intercultura is planning to organise a training course in Dinan (Bretagne - France) in the spring of 2009.

We want to bring together trainers with a certain experience in HRE in order to reflect on, collect and create tools and methods to use in informal places and moments during their training courses. This so participants are stimulated to continue their learning processes. All this should be done without touching or changing the informal character of these places and moments but to create rich of opportunities and stimulating environments for HR learning.
As a result of the TC we hope to have new interesting tools to be used, to create a kind of tool kit with all these tools inside reflecting the visiosn we have on Informal learning.

The title "ghost trainers" comes from the kind of invisibility when intervening in informal times and spaces... being present without being present, like a ghost

Therefore we are looking for partners for the application for the Youth in Action programme
We look more specific for partners from the following countries:

Portugal, Kroatia, Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic, Lithuania, Germany, Austria, Turkey and Spain.

CfP: Nobility, State and Society in 18th-century Provincial Russia, Deutsches Historisches Institut Moskau (DHI), 23-26 April, 2009

In his pioneering work on the Russian nobility of the 18th century, Mark Raeff wrote that "failure to create a genuine estate of the nobility perpetuated the average nobleman's rootlessness and dependence on the state" which, in the long run, "became the seedbed of the intelligentsia" (M. Raeff, Origins of the Russian Intelligentsia: The Eighteenth-Century Nobility, 1966). This view exerts a powerful influence to this day; in a recent study, for instance, we learn that "Images of alienation, absenteeism, economic torpidity, decline, and crisis derive from the multiple and malleable attributes of noble identity" (E.K. Wirtschafter, Social Identity in Imperial Russia, 1997).

The paradigm of the nobility's insecurity becomes most pervasive when applied to the provincial nobility, whose customs, lifestyles, and tastes are habitually associated with backwardness, ignorance, and boredom. However, as Michael Kugler argued with respect to European history, "the nature of provincialism has not been outlined in detail" (M. Kugler, "Provincial Intellectuals: Identity, Patriotism, and Enlightened
Peripheries," 1996). The purpose of this conference is to extend Kugler's insight to Russia and re-examine the provincial nobility in the 18th century.

A revived post-Soviet interest in the Russian provinces has resulted in a good number of new publications, both in Russia and the West. These post-1991 studies can be roughly divided in two major groups: those focusing on the empirical side of local history and seeking to unearth new archival data, and those investing energy in the development of novel theoretical approaches and generalizations. In the words of a recent review, "in the West we are confronted with theory without local, and in Russia we see the local without theory" (Susan Smith-Peter, "How to Write a Region: Local and Regional Historiography," Kritika 5.3 (2004) 527-542).

This conference aims to merge the empirical and theoretical approaches to local history. Ultimately, our goal is to produce a picture of life in the Russian provinces that is both rich in detail and solidly grounded in theory. Our main focus is on the 18th-century provincial nobility's interactions with the state and society. For this purpose we plan to see what can be gained from using local and micro history methods within a theoretical framework of regional studies. It is, we believe, high time to reconsider the still dominant view on the life in the provinces as backward and rude and on the provincial nobility as rootless and alienated. We hope that "re-thinking history" in terms of local studies (Ch. Phythian-Adams) will prove useful to our comprehension of the history of the Russian provinces and challenging to our perception of the 18th -century Russian nobility.

The conference organizers aspire to bring together a group of scholars to present their work and engage in discussions on the provincial nobility in 18th-century Russia. We invite papers on the topic that present empirically significant research based on diverse archival and other sources and are, at the same time, integrated into a strong theoretical framework. Papers with a comparative dimension are particularly welcome.

The following is a by no means exhaustive list of issues the papers might touch upon:

- the provinces versus the capital, regional versus central, local versus national;

- the "provincial" way of life in the 18th century;

- the provincial nobility and the state;

- the provincial nobility and society;

- social mobility in the provinces and its impact on the "provincial" way of life;

- local noble communities;

- local administration and the provincial nobility;

- the provincial nobility's search for an identity;

- the provincial nobility's nakazy to the Legislative Commission of 1767-1768;

- Noble Assemblies and the formation of civil society in Russia;

- economic, social, cultural, and legal interactions in the life of the provincial nobility;

- gender relations in provincial noble families and communities;

- the role of women in creating provincial noble societies;

- the army presence in the provinces and its impact on the local nobility's life;

- the impact of the country's modernization on the provinces;

- life strategies in creating independent spaces in the provinces;

- the role of the provinces in shaping Russian national identity;

- the mythology of the provinces;

- provincialism versus regionalism;

- provincialism in its Russian, European and North American contexts, comparative
perspectives, etc.

Organizational Information:

The organizers have applied for funding at the Deutsches Historisches Institut Moskau (DHI).

The conference will take place at the DHI at the Institut nauchnoi informatsii po
obshchestvennym naukam Rossiiskoi Akademii Nauk (INION RAN) in Moscow (Nachimovskij Prospekt 51/21). The sponsoring institution would cover the costs for travel and accommodation of all participants.

Conference date: 23-26 April, 2009

Abstracts in Russian or English (maximum length: 500 words) of the paper you intend to give should be sent to: Nobility.DHI@gmx.de

Your abstract should include your email address and institutional affiliation, the title of your intended paper, and the abstract text.

Deadline for submission of abstracts: 15 October 2008.

Notification of applicants: no later than 1 December 2008.

Chosen participants will then be asked to submit their article-length (at a maximum of 10,000 words) original papers in Russian no later than 1 March 2009. The papers will be precirculated among all participants so that there is ample time to read them before the conference.

Was begründet ihre Affi nität zurModerne?

USA: Scholarships at Luther College

About Luther College

Founded in 1861, Luther College is a four-year, university-level, residential institution of 2,500 students. One of the outstanding colleges in the Midwest, Luther offers more than 60 majors, minors, and pre-professional programs leading to the bachelor of arts degree. Originally founded by Norwegian immigrants, the college is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and welcomes students of all beliefs and backgrounds to its 1,000-acre campus.

Luther College is located in Decorah, Iowa, a picturesque community of nearly 8,500 people situated in the American heartland. Decorah has an abundance of clean air, clean water, and a very low crime rate. The town was recently recognized as one of the best 120 small towns in the United States. Decorah is the county seat for the area and includes a vibrant downtown, a beautifully restored residential historic district, Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum (the largest museum in the nation dedicated to a single ethnic group), and 14 city parks. In many ways, it's the perfect college town. The Upper Iowa River flows through the lower portion of the
Luther campus. Miles of trails located on or adjacent to campus are used for hiking, skiing, and biking. Northeast Iowa offers beautiful scenery and fewer urban distractions, enabling students to focus fully on academics, preparing for graduate/profession al schools, and discovering the ways in which they will serve in the world.

Although Luther is located a bit off the beaten path, the college is also widely known in larger circles; it annually receives visitors of regional, national, and international prominence in politics, the arts and sciences, and entertainment. Every fifth year, Luther even hosts the Nobel Peace Prize Forum on campus, bringing together influential individuals in the world of peacemaking, including Nobel laureates. It's not surprising, then, that Luther College has a long commitment and history in educating international students.

More than 100 international students from nearly 50 countries study on campus each year. In addition to students from around the world, Luther is pleased to welcome students from nearly 40 of the 50 states in the country. International students thrive at Luther. The campus community is welcoming and eager to learn from and with students from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives. The residential nature of Luther fosters a sense of life in community that is rather special. Almost all Luther students live in one of nine residence halls. The residence life staff helps students in the transition to college and supports them in their personal and social growth and academic success.

Financing a Luther Education
Every year, Luther awards a significant amount of financial aid to entering international students. Funds are awarded for full-time study during the nine-month academic year on the basis of academic merit and family financial need. A typical academic award usually combines scholarships and grant money (which does not have to be repaid) with on-campus work. Luther College’s funds for international students are not limitless, however. In general, students should expect to pay for a portion (up to one half or more) of their own educational expenses through family funds and/or aid programs offered through local or national churches, government agencies, and cultural organizations.
