Contesting/Negotiat ing European Union in the Turkish Context
With the beginning of accession negotiations on October 3, 20005, the relationship between Turkey and the European Union (EU) entered a new phase. Different aspects of this relationship, that officially started in 1963, have been discussed in detail at the policy level, such as the meaning of Europeanization for Turkey, the effect of EU accession on Turkish economy, challenges for Turkey on its path of accession. Many of the subjects that constitute the chapters in the negotiations to measure progress with the EU acquis communitaire, such as democracy and human rights in Turkey, the economic crisis and the challenges over functioning market economy, have also been examined in detail.
Similarly, the perceptions of public in European member states have become the focus of analysis to understand EU's own internal dynamics. A less studied aspect of the accession negotiations though is Turkey's own internal dynamics regarding the chapters measuring progress on Turkey's ability to assume the obligations of membership. As Turkey is still adopting the EU acquis, the process is treated as a technical one. However, there are various repercussions of the accession negotiations at different scales, from the household level to the regions based on NUTS criteria.
In this panel, we are interested in questioning/ analyzing both the repercussions of the contested aspects of the EU accession (i.e. agriculture, culture, religion) and at different scales (i.e. perceptions of individual s on Europeanness, outcomes of European Commission funded projects, expectations of local administrators/ public from EU accession). Papers might address debates on any of the chapters in the accession negotiations between Turkey and the EU or the repercussions of other relevant issues in the Turkish context.
The deadline for MESA submissions is 16 Feb 2009. If interested, please send a 300-400 word abstract to the organizer by 9 Feb 2009, to give time to select papers and prepare the panel submission, along with the title of the presentation
