CfP: 3rd Intl Conf. of Roma Women, Granada, DL 07.10

THIRD INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF ROMA WOMEN ROMNIA WORLD CONGRESS ¨I AM A ROMA WOMAN OF THE WORLD ¨

Granada, Spain, 23-25 October 2011

The Third International Conference of Roma Women organised by the Council of Europe in cooperation with the Instituto de Cultura Gitana of the Ministry of Culture, the Spanish Government and the International Network of Roma Women (IRWN) will take place in Granada, Spain, in October this year.

Giving a voice to the voiceless was the theme of earlier Council of Europe Roma women conferences and this latest event will again aim to ensure that the voices of the Roma women remain heard and, more importantly, listened to. The importance of providing a platform for
Roma women to express the plight of their communities, whilst striving for social justice and the protection of their human rights, cannot be over-emphasised. Through first-hand accounts, Roma women have been given the opportunity at previous conferences to express their vulnerability both within and outside of their communities and to network and, in doing so, have become valuable interlocutors for governments and international organisations.

International organisations such as the Fundamental Rights Agency of the European Union (FRA), the OSCE/ODIHR and the Governments of Sweden and Greece joined forces with the Council of Europe for the first two international conferences of Roma women. At the 2007 conference in Stockholm, the Roma women present expressed the wish to see future meetings organised by different governments. In this respect, Greece hosted the second conference in Athens in 2009, which focused on the responses to different challenges such as changing the negative perception of Romnia in the media, the elimination of harmful practices such as early marriages and forced sterilisation, and the promotion of entrepreneurship and economic empowerment. After Stockholm and Greece, it is the turn of Granada to welcome the world’s Roma women.

This third international gathering will take the form of a World Congress bringing together Romnia from different continents (Europe, Asia, America and Africa) who will contribute their ideas and share their experiences. It will address further the priority issues identified at the last meeting in Athens, such as the participation of Roma women in the planning, implementation and evaluation of policies developed with Roma women, access to education for girls, sexual
diversity in the Roma woman and harmful practices in the media. Other topics to be explored include cultural issues such as the contribution of Roma to the 21st century, cultural currents embedded in society, internal and external cultural values and identity.

The Council of Europe will cover the travel expenses of one Roma woman representative per Member State. Hotel and meal expenses will be covered by the Spanish organisers. If you are a Roma women who would like to participate in this unique event, you should firstly express your interest by sending your letter of motivation to roma.team@coe. int before 7th October 2011.

CfP: Research Committee on Sociology of Population, ISA Forum of Sociology, August 1-4, 2012, Buenos Aires, Argentina

Second ISA Forum of Sociology, August 1-4, 2012, Buenos Aires, Argentina

Research Committee on Sociology of Population, RC41, Session D:

Who's Afraid of Population Decline? Challenges, Responses and Consequences?

Chairs:
Walter BARTL, Martin-Luther- University Halle-Wittenberg, Germany, walter.bartl@ soziologie. uni-halle. de
Reinhold SACKMANN, Martin-Luther- University Halle-Wittenberg, Germany, reinhold.sackmann@ soziologie. uni-halle. de

Demographic change has been on the research agenda of population scholars for several decades now. Whereas population growth was the main topic of inquiry after the Second World War and still is considered to be relevant for many countries of the so called 'south' population ageing and population decline have (re)entered the research agenda only after many countries of the 'north' have faced the second demographic transition. Among these two 'newcomer'-topics
population ageing has become well established as an overwhelming number of publications show. Much less attention has been paid to questions of population decline despite its empirical
frequency.

On a national level the Western world is going to face population decline in the short or medium term given current levels of fertility (with the exception of the United States, New Zealand, and Iceland) if immigration is not to compensate 'natural' population losses. Many developing countries are likely to follow that demographic pattern within a few decades. Countries with a 'natural' population decline in 2008 included Italy, Germany, 12 countries in Eastern Europe
and the Russian Federation, and Japan. On a regional level the picture becomes even more diverse and raw distinctions such as 'north' and 'south' do not capture demographic developments any more. The same is true for the urban level. Nevertheless the cases are ubiquitous: about a quarter of the cities worldwide with more than 100.000 inhabitants are confronted with
population decline and in three quarters of the post socialist cities in Europe with more than 200.000 inhabitants shrinking populations have been observed.

Existing research has focussed much more on explaining why population numbers decline and much less on possible consequences resulting from these phenomena. The aim of this session is to put population decline, and resultingchallenges, responses, and possible consequences more in focus of the international research agenda.

Papers for this session should therefore address one or more of the following questions:
- Which patterns of (national, regional, urban) population decline can be observed?
- Which specific challenges result from declining population numbers? (E.g.: to territorial cohesion.)
- How exactly pose declining populations challenges that are different from challenges resulting from growing populations?
- Which aspect of population decline is most problematic?
(E.g.: the expectation of decline, tempo, scope and volatility of the process itself or its result: smaller populations.)
- Which social fields are vulnerable to shrinking populations? (E.g.: infrastructures of the welfare state such as child care, education and health units; public administration, business
organisations, the family.)
- Which responses to declining populations can be observed?
- How can responses to declining population numbers be classified and explained?
- Which consequences result from population decline and specific response patterns (on a national, regional, urban, organizational, individual level)?
- Is it desirable and possible to develop a middle range theory of possible consequences of population decline?

Especially welcome are paper proposals based on comparative empirical research and theoretical contributions that systematically reflect the relationship of demographic changes and social institutions and infrastructures.

Abstract submission
Only abstracts submitted on-line can be incorporated in the sessions. Please use the ISA abstract submission website:
http://www.isa-sociology.org/buenos-aires-2012/abstract-submission.htm

Deadlines
- On-line abstract submission will be open from August 25 to December 15, 2011.
- Authors will be notified if their paper has been accepted or not in the programme (for presentation or as distributed paper) by January 31, 2012.
- All Forum participants (presenters, chairs, discussants, etc.) need to pay the early registration fee by April 10, 2012, in order to be included in the programme. If not registered, their names will not appear in the Programme or Abstracts Book. On-line registration will open August 25, 2011.

CfP: 19th Intl Conf. of Europeanists, "Memory-contestation-identity: European politics of remembrance"

CfP: Memory-contestation-identity: European politics of remembrance

19th International Conference of Europeanists
Boston, Massachusetts • March 22-24, 2012
Organized by the Council for European Studies

Even if research on questions of memory and identity have permeated empirical political science in the past few years, there is still a lack of comprehensive studies dealing with both transnational pan-European politics of remembrance and the question if and how it is connected to an unfolding European public sphere.

For the next Council for European Studies Conference taking place from 22-24 March 2012 in Boston, we are looking for research projects which examine exactly this nexus between European politics of remembrance, European identity and an emerging European public sphere from different
angles. All scholars dealing with politics of remembrance on the European level are invited to submit a proposal. Papers could investigate for example the way the EU has dealt publicly with the memory of WWII, discuss the emergence of a European public sphere vis-à-vis the remembrance of oppression and dictatorship, map European efforts to implement a standardised negative founding myth on the basis of the Holocaust or examine the continuous conflict between the memory of Stalinism and Nazism/Fascism on the European level (to give just a few examples).

The panel thus seeks to investigate an area that so far has been under-researched. While the amount of studies exploring politics of memory on the national level has seen an enormous increase in the past years, there is little evidence of research dealing with issues and actors on the European level. Scholars concentrating particularly on the manifold relations between pan-European politics of remembrance, questions of identity and (a) European public sphere(s) are therefore particularly encouraged to apply.

Paper proposals (250 words abstracts) should be sent to alinesierp@gmail. com by September 17, 2011. We are planning to include suitable contributions in an edited volume that are published as part of the ECPR - Studies in European Political Science series.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have further questions! We are looking forward to your contributions.

CfP: Intl Conf. "Europeanization: Do we still miss the big picture?"

Europeanization : Do we still miss the big picture?

29-30 March 2012, Université libre de Bruxelles

The Centre d’Etude de la Vie Politique (CEVIPOL) of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences and the Institute for European Studies (IEE) of the Université libre de Bruxelles are organizing an international conference with the title “Europeanization : Do we still miss the big picture?” on March 29 and 30, 2012 in Brussels.

Description of the conference

The concept of Europeanization can be considered as a tremendous success in the field European Studies of the last 20 years. Already early on the number of approaches to analyze how and “when Europe hits home” has multiplied. While this variety certainly is a strength, it runs a methodological risk: no common definition of Europeanization has been found and more precisely the danger of conceptual stretching occurs. Meanwhile, the first generations of definitions have been abandoned due to their conceptual proximity to concepts European integration, but more comprehensive definitions imply again the complexity of processes of Europeanization and mutual impacts of Europeanization and European Integration.

This development points at a complex facet of Europeanization research: do we want to limit ourselves to use Europeanization as the explanans for change? Is it not also necessary to explain Europeanization itself, i.e. treating it as the explanandum? Instead of assuming that we find a linear process in either direction, shouldn’t we take into account that processes of construction, diffusion and institutionalizatio n do not necessarily follow a stringent or coherent pattern? Furthermore it is questionable that these processes will have the same impact on the ‘classical’ 3 P’s of Political science: policies, politics and polities.

We still seem not to know a lot about the black box of the national and subnational level, i.e. how actors deal with the EU’s direct and indirect impact every day and the relationship of Europeanization and European Integration. Do we still miss the big picture of Europeanization? Is such a picture desirable? Or does it become much more of a mosaic given its plethora of analytical approaches? Hence a discussion on research methods and case selection is needed as the emphasis on complexity runs the risk of losing the analytical capacity to determine causality in Europeanization.

This conference will try to develop answers to these questions by dealing with the above mentioned complex processes of Europeanization:
o Do we still miss the “big picture” of Europeanization?
o How can we improve theory in Europeanization studies?
o What methodology for opening the black box?
o How do complex processes of Europeanization relate to European integration?

The conference structure will follow this threefold focus of attention with three panels:
(a) Improving theory
(b) Europeanization and European Integration
(c) Case Studies on Europeanization.

Abstracts (max. 300 words) should be submitted, along with contact information (name, institutional affiliation, department, e-mail address), to Thomas Kostera (Thomas.Kostera@ ulb.ac.be ) by November 15, 2011.Submissions must be in an electronic form as PDF format or as
a Microsoft Word document. Notifications of acceptance will be sent out by December 10, 2011. For more information, please contact Thomas.Kostera@ ulb.ac.be or Luca.Tomini@ulb.acbe .

The full paper (max. 8000 words) must be submitted by March 1st, 2012.

A publication of the conference papers is planned.

Main session at the EAUH 2012 Conference: Cities & Societies in Comparative Perspective

Deadline for proposals: 1 October 2011

In What is Art (1904) Leo Tolstoy noted `the people who do all the work...the people who always sit below the stage moving the decorations, winding up the machinery, working at the piano or French horn, and setting type and printing books' (p 69). Elsewhere he mentions `the professional artists, who lived by the trade, receiving remunerations from newspaper editors, publishers, impresarios, and in general from those agents who come between the artists and the town public - the consumers of art' (p. 119).

In recent years the impact of cultural activity on the fabric and organisation of cities has received increased attention from urban historians. This session aims to focus on some of the distinctive features of this aspect of urban life during a key period of change. Between the mid-nineteenth century and the Second World War the role of culture in the economic life of European cities not only expanded, but was transformed. Mass education, technological innovation, professionalization, and the development of the cultural industries and their associated institutions gave rise to new patterns and types of employment. Elite culture flourished, supported by an expanding art market, the specialist press and public and private patronage. At the same time new forms of popular culture developed, catering to a growing public
of literate workers and lower middle class employees.

Both sectors of cultural production generated distinct forms of work for large numbers of `cultural workers' with a diversity of skills. Alongside the 'stars' of cultural production - artists, actors, composers, and performers - battalions of 'backroom' workers shifted scenes, made costumes, set type, took photographs, made instruments, edited copy, framed and dispatched pictures, and carried out all the other tasks required by the making, presentation, and dissemination of cultural products. The establishment and growth of the cultural quarters found
in many metropolitan cities was dependent upon the workers who serviced and staffed the agencies involved in cultural activity. This session will explore and analyse the contribution of different types of cultural worker to the nature and texture of urban life and the cultural economy within the comparative framework of European cities in the period. Papers should address the key question of the impact of changes in technology, commercial and cultural practices, and forms of cultural transmission on the lives of people employed by, or involved in, the cultural sectors of the urban economy.

Other questions might include the following:
- What particular sites of cultural activity can be found in towns and cities?
- What categories of cultural workers can be identified and how did their patterns of work, life experiences and lifestyles interact with and help to shape urban life and culture?
- What role was played by distinctively urban sites of sociability and leisure?
- What part was played in the development of urban cultures by professional and industrial networks and organisations?
- How important was the mobility of cultural workers within and between cities?
- How did the experiences of those employed in the `cultural industries' of the private sector differ from those in state or municipal institutions?

he proposals should be directed either to
1. the only email address available in the post
i.e. Jill Steward (Newcastle University) - Jill.Steward@ ncl.ac.uk or
2. directly submitted via the online paper proposal form of the EAUH
2012: http://www.eauh2012.com/sessions/call-for-paper-proposals/

The general rule requires no more than 500 words.
Deadline: 1 October 2011.

PhD Research Project, School of Medecine, University of Manchester

The objective of this PhD project is to use molecular, cellular and whole animal approaches to investigate the mechanisms by which ketoglutarate, through GPR99 receptor, modifies the cardiac response against pathological stimuli.

The prevalence of heart failure (HF) in the UK is increasing with close to 1 million individuals with HF in the UK alone due to an increase in the ageing population. Prognosis of HF remains poor, however, advances in the management of HF are limited because the pathophysiological mechanisms are incompletely understood. Using metabolomics analysis we have shown significant increases in the metabolite ketoglutarate in the serum of HF patients.

Ketoglutarate is a citric acid cycle intermediate and in addition to its role in energy production, ketoglutarate can bind to a G-protein coupled receptor (GPR99) and may produce biological actions through its activation. Our preliminary data shows that cardiomyocytes express the GPR99 receptor and when treated with ketoglutarate display an increased level of VEGFR-1 and PGF, two key regulators of cardiac hypertophy and angiogenesis. Based on successful preliminary data, this project will explore the entirely novel idea that ketoglutarate is pivotal in modulating hypertrophy (enlargement of the heart), a key process in the progression of HF.

The main aims of the study will be to:

- Investigate the effects of GPR99 over-expression in cardiomyocyte hypertrophy.
- Investigate the effects of GPR99 gene ablation in mice.

Overall, this project will determine the role of ketoglutarate and its receptor in the pathophysiology of HF. It will also provide a unique combination of training in molecular biology and in vivo animal physiology for the successful applicant.

The project will be conducted within the Cardiovascular Research Group, an internationally recognised group ranked within the top four in the 2008 UK RAE. Extensive training in molecular cellular biology and in vivo animal physiology will be provided. Completion of this project would equip the candidate for progression into academic biomedical research as well as the biomedical industry.

Applicants should hold, or expect to obtain, a minimum upper-second honours degree (or equivalent) in biochemistry, physiology, biological/medical sciences, pharmacology or a related area. A Masters degree in a similar area would be an advantage.

This 3-year project is open to UK/EU and non-EU nationals but no funding is provided. Applicants must therefore be able to provide evidence of their ability to provide self-arranged funding. Annual tuition fees for this project are currently:

*UK/EU nationals: £6, 300
Non-EU nationals: £17, 000

Please direct applications in the following format to the project lead, Dr Delvac Oceandy (delvac.oceandy@manchester.ac.uk):

• Academic CV
• Official academic transcripts
• Contact details for two suitable referees
• A personal statement (750 words maximum) outlining your suitability for the study, what you hope to achieve from the PhD and your research experience to date
• Evidence of funding.

Any enquiries relating to the project and/or suitability should be directed to Dr Oceandy at the address above.

Funding Notes:

*UK/EU nationals should note that the fee is subject to an annual increase of approxmately 2.5%

1 PhD studentship & 1 postdoctoral position in Nantes University Hospital (France)

Both positions will be in the Department of Biostatistics (EA 4275), Nantes University Hospital (France) and in the Institute of Transplantation, Urology and Nephrology, INSERM U643, Nantes Hospital (France).

Our department of biostatistics is expanding with 1 professor, 3 assistant professors, 2 postdoctoral researchers and 4 PhD students. The two main domains are the analysis of subjective data measures in Health research, such as quality of life outcomes, and the analysis of
longitudinal and survival data in predictive medicine.

For discussion about this project, please contact Yohann Foucher (Tel: 33(0)2 40 41 28 24, Email: Yohann.Foucher@ univ-nantes. fr). To candidate for one of both following positions, you can send your CV at the previous address. You can also send other documents as manuscripts or scientific reports.

*The Biostatistic PhD studentship*

The aim of this project is to construct a composite surrogate marker of the long-term kidney transplant survival. Determining early surrogate markers of long-term graft outcome is important for optimal medical management. After the exploration of existing literature in multi-state
models and time-dependant ROC curves (or other prognostic indexes), the PhD student will apply this methodology to the analysis of the evolution of kidney transplant recipients (cohort DIVAT, www.divat.fr for more details). The PhD student will propose tools for the medical community in transplantation for improving medical decision making. Even if simulations will first be performed in order to evaluate the robustness of statistical methods, this project will be mainly based on real data and close to medical practice. The capacity of the PhD student to work within a multi-disciplinary research team will constitute a very important issue for the candidate evaluation.

Applicants should have a master’s degree in statistics with a strong interest in medical statistics and epidemiology and also good programming skills, specifically in R. This studentship is funded full-time for three years by the French direction of hospitalization and
care organization (DHOS). It represents a net income of €19,000 per year. It is open to all students from all nationalities. The project is due to begin between the 1st October 2011 and the 1st January 2012. The deadline for application is the 1st December 2011.

*The postdoctoral position in Biostatistics*

The aim of the survival analysis is to study the correlation between covariates with the time until the failure of interest. The difficulty in transplantation is to define the failure since two terminal events are in competition: death and return in dialysis. Moreover, knowing
whether death can be considered as related or independent to transplantation is not possible. The aim of this project is the adaptation of survival relative models in kidney transplantation. We can distinguish two complementary parts in this project: firstly, the statistical developments of models and secondly, the analysis of the cohort DIVAT (www.divat.fr) for validation of the concept in the transplantation community. Multi-state analysis will also constitute a central point in the research activity.

Applicant should have a thesis in Biostatistics with a strong interest in medical statistics and epidemiology and also good programming skills, specifically in R. A solid theoretical background in survival and longitudinal analysis is expected.

This studentship is funded full-time for two years by the French national agency of research (ANR). It represents a net income of €23,000 per year. It is open to all students from all nationalities. The project is due to begin from the 1st April 2012 (regarding availability of the applicants). The deadline for application is the 15th February 2012.
