PhD Research Fellow in Language Technology - University of Oslo, Norway

The Department of Informatics (IFI) is one of nine departments belonging to the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Oslo. IFI is Norway’s largest university department for broad education and research in Computer Science and related topics. You can read more about the Department here: http://www.ifi.uio.no. The overall staff of the Department is close to 250 employees, about 150 of these are full time scientific positions: about 60 Full/Associate Professors and about 90 PhD Fellows/Post Doctoral Fellows.

The fellowship is for a period of up to 4 years, with 25 % compulsory work. Starting date no later than 1 October, 2010.

Job description

The position is part of the Focal Research Area in Language Technology (LT), hosted at the IFI Research Group in Logic and Natural Languages (LNS). For background on the research environment, please see:

http://www.ifi.uio.no/research/groups/lns/lt.html

The LT research area has its specialization in hybrid approaches to Natural Language Processing, with emphasis on the interplay of grammar and semantics. The ideal candidate would have some knowledge of both formal, rule-based as well as of data-driven, statistical methods within Computational Linguistics―with an understanding of the use of these methods in core tasks like parsing, lexical acquisition, information extraction, or others. Such a background and a corresponding, hybrid research interest for the PhD project would be a plus, though is anything but a requirement. The group pursues a predominantly applied research agenda, hence at least a minimal level of implementation experience is desirable for this position. Finally, the research group is an active member of the international Deep Linguistic Processing with HPSG Initiative (DELPH-IN; http://www.delph-in.net). Prior exposure to some of the theories, formalisms, or tools used within DELPH-IN would be welcome, but we fully encourage applicants with other backgrounds or areas of interest.

Applicants may submit a project outline for the qualifying work during the PhD program. The project proposal should include a proposed research topic, main scientific issues, as well as the anticipated choice of theory and method.

Requirements

Applicants must hold a Masters degree or equivalent in Computational Linguistics or Computer Science (with a specialization relevant to Language Technology).

The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.

The fellowship requires admission to the research training programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. An approved plan for the research training, including a project outline, must be submitteed no later than two months after taking up the position, and the admission must be approved within three months. For more information see: http://www.uio.no/admhb/reglhb/personal/tilsettingvitenskapelig/regulationstermcondition.xml

PhD positions in EURANDOM NL

PhD researcher for the project
"Analysis of the behavior of extremes under non-stationary climate conditions"
The PhD researcher is going to work at the Department Climate and Seismology, within the Climate for Knowledge Research Program. The research is a joint project of the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) and EURANDOM.

General information
KNMI is the Dutch national centre for data and knowledge on weather, climate and seismology. KNMI performs scientific research at a recognized high international level. One of the central themes is climate change. KNMI constructs climate scenarios of future climate which are used by society to adapt to possible climate changes. KNMI uses observations, complex numerical climate models and scientific knowledge for that purpose.

EURANDOM is the European Research Institute for the study of random phenomena. Research at EURANDOM covers stochastics and its applications, as well as its interfaces with other disciplines. Stochastics consists of statistics, probability theory, and stochastic operations research. The core business of EURANDOM is fundamental research in an international environment, carried out by a non-tenured staff of junior researchers and senior advisors supplemented with an extensive programme of seminars, workshops, and visitors.

Job description
Many applications demand knowledge of extreme values in climate. Most infrastructure is (still) designed assuming that our climate is stationary. However, series of measurements show that our climate has changed during the past decades and climate models show that these changes will continue in the future, among others due to human influence on climate. The main question in the research project will be: "How can we optimally account for climate change when the probability of extreme events is to be determined"? This "probability of extremes" is an important parameter for the design of infrastructure. The PhD researcher will contribute to statistical modeling and analysis of extreme values in observations and in projections with regional climate models, with an emphasis on extremes in precipitation and temperature. We expect the candidate to make optimal use of the unique collaboration between KNMI and EURANDOM in order to link actual knowledge in the area of climate and statistics and further develop it. For this reason the candidate will get two workplaces, one in De Bilt and one in Eindhoven

Qualifications
* having a Master degree in science or engineering
* broad knowledge of mathematical statistics, proved by graduation subject or relevant working experience
* experience with statistical packages like R or comparable programming languages
* thorough knowledge of the English language for technical and science purposes
* interest in climate and climate change
* entrepreneurial

Salary
first year max € 2.042 gross per month
second year max. € 2.379 gross per month
third year max. € 2.222,13 gross per month
fourth year max. € 2.571,64 gross per month.
Selection committee

prof. dr.ir. G. Jongbloed (EURANDOM, TU Delft)
dr. T.A. Buishand (KNMI)
prof. dr. J.H. van Zanten (EURANDOM, TU Eindhoven)

Special remarks
The appointment is for four years. The first two years of appointment are at EURANDOM, TU/e, the last two years at KNMI. During the complete period of appointment, the candidate will work at both places. Temporary staff at KNMI is typically appointed by the Foundation Scientific Research (SWO) KNMI.

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in astronomy/astrophysics, cosmology, high energy physics or a related subject.

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has appointed the cosmology group of the Institute as an emerging top-tier research group. The participation in the European Space Agency’s flagship mission Planck and the ground based CMB polarization experiment QUIET, and a strong effort in fundamental cosmological theory, act as two foci for consolidating the group and developing it further to become one of Norway’s internationally most visible research groups in the physical sciences.

The PhD research fellow will work within this group within the project “Cosmological Probes of Modified Gravity”, which is funded by the Research Council of Norway and led by Dr. David F. Mota. Research is related to studies of the nonlinear regime of structure formation within dark energy theories. The research fellow will use numerical simulations to study the clustering of matter within two different theoretical approaches to dark energy, which are based on extensions of General Relativity: Scalar-Tensor gravities and Brane World Theories.

Applicants may submit a project proposal for the qualifying work during the program. The project proposal should include research topic, main issues, as well as choice of theory and method.

The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.

The fellowship requires admission to the research training programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. An approved plan for the research training, including a project outline, must be submitted no later than two months after taking up the position, and the admission must be approved within three months. PhD Fellowship in Mathematics (Young Researcher Position), at the University of Primorska, Slovenia

The University of Primorska, Koper, Slovenia, announces one PhD Fellowship in Mathematics (Computationally Intensive Methods and Applications), under the supervision of Prof Dragan Stevanović.

The training of the Young Researcher (YR) will take place within a team that will create new mathematical software for use in chemical research. Excellent programming capabilities (C, Java, web interface) are therefore expected. The software will also be used in mathematical research of graph theoretical invariants of interest in chemistry.

Applicants should have a B.Sc. or equivalent training in Mathematics or Computer Science, and are expected to enroll in the PhD program.

The PhD Fellowships are free of tuition fee; applicants can expect a salary in the gross amount of 1368 euro. Position carries additional yearly expenses as well (for computer equipment, conference attendance etc). The PhD Fellowships will be financed for a maximum duration of three years and six months.
