PhD Research Fellow in Experimental Particle Physics - University of Oslo, Norway

The Department og Physics has experimental as well as theoretical research activities in a broad range of subfields (see http://www.physics.uio.no/research/), with a stated ambition of attaining excellence in its main fields of research. At the department there is a scientific staff of 47 tenured positions, 8 adjunct professors, and 21 fellowships for PhD-students. In addition there are 52 temporary positions based on external financing. There is a technical/administrative staff of 38 persons. The teaching at the department is related to the degrees of bachelor, master and PhD, currently with about 125 master- and 75 PhD students. For more information please see www.fys.uio.no.

The fellowship is for a period of up to 4 years, with 25 % compulsory work. The teaching must be conducted in one of the Scandinavian languages or English. Starting date no later than 1 October, 2010.

Job description:

The LHC experiments at CERN started collecting proton-proton collision data late last year, and expect to collect 1 fb-1 of data with 7 TeV collision energy during the extended 2010-2011 run. The physics program at LHC is broad, but studies of the Higgs mechanism, searches for new fundamental symmetries (such as supersymmetry or new gauge symmetries), and studies of the phase transition between hadronic material and the quark-gluon plasma under the extreme conditions of collisions at the LHC are among the important physics goals for the CERN@UiO strategic research center at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. This center participates in the ALICE (heavy ion) and ATLAS (general purpose p-p) experiments with significant funding provided by Norwegian Research Council projects.

The candidate for this position is expected to perform analysis and interpretation of the early data taken with the ATLAS experiment. Some traveling and service work for the experiment in terms of either distributed computing support, software development or sub-detector support must be expected. More information can be found at the center's web page www.fys.uio.no/cern.

The applicants must document experience in particle physics. Experience working in large collaborations and in scientific programming are advantages.

Applicants may submit a project proposal for the qualifying work during the program. The project proposal should include research topic, main issues, as well as choice of theory and method.

Requirements:

Applicants must hold a Master's degree in physics or equivalent is required.

The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.

The fellowship requires admission to the research training programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. An approved plan for the research training, including a project outline, must be submitteed no later than two months after taking up the position, and the admission must be approved within three months.
