PhD Research Fellow in Glaciology - University of Oslo, Norway

The geosciences are the studies of planet Earth the atmosphere, the hydrosphere (including oceans, freshwater and glaciers), the earth's surface and its interior. The span of the work at the Department is well illustrated by the research sections: Meteorology and Oceanography, Environmental Geology, Hydrology and Geohazards, Physical Geography Petroleum Geology and Geophysics Tectonics, Petrology and Geochemistry. The faculty consists of 45 professors and lecturers from 5 different sections. In addition, there are Postdoctoral fellows, Ph.D. students, technical staff and administrative personnel. The fellowship is for a period of up to 4 years, with 25 % compulsory work. Starting date no later than 1 October, 2010.

Job description:

The position is affiliated with the Section for Physical Geography. The candidate will work with the dynamic response of Arctic Glaciers, utilizing remote sensing data, field observation data and modeling, in the follow up of the International Polar Year Project Glaciodyn. The emphasis will be on the interaction between (increased) glacier melt and glacier dynamics. Depending on the competence of the successful candidate, the project can be oriented towards the mathematical modeling of glacier dynamics and hydrology, or towards the observational side with focus on field observations and remote sensing.

Requirements:

Applicants must hold a Master's degree or equivalent in in a field relevant for the project work.

The position requires good skills within numerical modelling, and familiarity with MATLAB or similar high level languages is an advantage. Knowledge and experience of cold regions and field work are an asset. The compulsory work load of 25% will be within teaching in courses on all levels.

The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.

The fellowship requires admission to the research training programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. An approved plan for the research training, including a project outline, must be submitteed no later than two months after taking up the position, and the admission must be approved within three months. Salary:

PhD Research Fellow (SKO 1017), pay grade: 45-51 (NOK 355 400 – 394 200 per year, depending on seniority/qualifications)
