Ph.D. / post-doc position on sustainability assessment of bio-based materials

The Group Science, Technology and Society (STS; www.chem.uu. nl/nws) has a vacancy for a Ph.D. position (also suitable as post-doc position) on the sustainability assessment of bio-based materials. We recommend interested researchers to submit their CV and motivation letter and any relevant background information already now. Please send your documents as soon as possible to m.k.patel@uu.nl .

Background

In the last few years, sustainability issues have been receiving more attention than ever before among all stakeholders of the society including researchers, policy makers, companies and NGOs. Frontrunners in sustainable energy, in sustainable materials and manufacturing and in sustainable services are currently setting the stage. The range of (technology) options offering opportunities for sustainable development is rapidly expanding. The boundary conditions, including economic parameters such as the oil price and policy goals are subject to change. Methodologies for monitoring sustainability are being developed, tested and applied. STS is active in this dynamic field of research covering all all three areas of sustainability. The prime focus is on environmental aspects, followed by economic assessment and, to a limited extent, also social aspects are covered.

Job description

Bio-based materials represent a new, rapidly developing area which is seen as one of the cornerstones of a bio-based economy next to biofuels and other forms of bioenergy. The objective is to develop and to apply novel, bio-based materials with low environmental footprint, favourable economics and advantageous social effects. Companies of the chemical sector and the agricultural sector are teaming up to produce such materials which are expected to be used in large amounts in the consumer goods sector and the packaging industry. The developments have so far been limited to R&D and first stages of commercialization but given the very dynamic developments there is urgent need for a comprehensive assessment of the sustainability aspects.

The objectives of the project FEASIBLE (full title: Feasibility of End use Applications: Sustainability and techno-Economic aspects) closely link up to these needs. In the context of this project it will be your task to contribute to methodology development for the sustainability assessment of bio-based materials (esp. environmental and economic aspects) and to apply these methods to approximately four end applications of everyday life (e.g. injection moulded components and insulation materials). As part of your project work you will closely interact with researchers, developers and users of novel bio-based materials.

FEASIBLE is part of the large-scale project “Bio-based Performance materials” (BPM) which is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture.

Qualifications

You should have an M.Sc. or Ph.D. degree in chemistry or physics, chemical/process engineering and/or environmental sciences. Experience with research on environmental issues (preferably LCA) and very good English language skills are indispensible prerequisites. Publications in scientific journals and experience in networking are considered as advantages.

Terms of employment

The candidates are offered a position for approximately four years. Next to research (90%) you will also contribute to teaching (10%).

•Creative Media & Commercial Law - a joint award offered with the School of Electronic Engineering & Computer Science (EECS). Research should focus on the legal implications of collaborative work in creative media, such as free sharing, open source and user generated content (UGC)

•Risk Assessment & Decision Analysis in the Legal Context - a Joint award offered with the School of EECS. Research should focus on the potential application of models of uncertainty or risk assessment and decision analysis in the legal context, including the areas of dispute resolution, finance and banking, intellectual property, tax and information technology law. Read more about the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science.

About the award

•The award is for full time postgraduate PhD research students only;

•The award will cover all tuition fees whether at the Home/EU rate or the overseas rate. It is therefore open to both UK and overseas applicants.

•Only applicants who have completed the online application process to the PhD programme prior to the funding submission deadline will be considered for funding. Find out how to apply for the PhD programme.

•Applicants should be aware that the School of Law PhD programme has various entrance requirements which applicants are expected to meet, including, for example, academic performance requirements relating to previously taken taught postgraduate degrees in a law or law-related subject. For applicants applying for a studentship jointly provided by another School within the University, a postgraduate degree in a topic relating to the specific subject area outlined for the award is required.

•In addition, an award of at least £15,590 per year (reviewed annually) will be paid to the recipient on a monthly basis throughout the calendar year starting from September 2011.

•The award is renewable over three years of study while in full time enrolment, subject to satisfactory annual progress reports;

•At the end of the three years, research students sometimes need further time to complete their research and thesis. This is known as `writing up' time. Students only move to writing up when their supervisor confirms that the student has submitted a satisfactory first full draft of the entire thesis for the supervisor's review and the Director of Graduate Studies is satisfied that the student can complete within the year. The writing-up period does not attract full tuition fees, although a reduced writing up fee may be payable. A student in writing up is responsible for his/her own living costs as well as for any writing up fee;

•The award is for new applicants looking to enrol at the beginning of the coming academic year, in September 2011 (or, in exceptional circumstances, the following January 2012 – for example, for current UK LLM students who will only graduate in November 2011). Therefore, existing PhD students who have already enrolled prior to September are not eligible to apply for the award.

•Successful recipients of this award may be required to undertake teaching and/or support duties within the School of Law (or the other School in the University involved, if it is a joint award) ;

•The studentships are awarded on the basis of academic excellence and financial need. The application process for these awards is highly competitive.

•The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the body that awards the Studentships in the last instance, requires applicants to submit a 750-1000 word summary of their Research Proposal along with their funding application. This summary must address the following questions:

- What is the subject of your proposed doctoral dissertation? (500 words maximum). Please include a brief title
- Why is Queen Mary the right place for you to undertake this research?
- What ethical issues – if any – are relevant to your research?
- What research training and professional preparation have you already received?
- What further training and professional preparation will you need to complete the doctorate and being your career?
- The decision on award allocation will then be made no later than the end of April 2011
- If you have any queries relating to the funding application process, e-mail Mr Gareth Skehan, School of Law PhD Admissions Administrator on g.skehan@qmul. ac.uk

Indonesian Arts And Culture Scholarship Programme

2011 Indonesian Arts And Culture Scholarship Programme
Short Term Programme
The Indonesian Arts and Culture Scholarship
25 April - 29 July 2011

The Indonesian Arts and Culture Scholarship has been conducted since 2003 and was initially offered to and participated by member countries of the South West Pacific Dialogue (SwPD); Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Timor-Leste, and the host Indonesia.

Bearing in mind the significance and advantages obtained from the program, the offer was expanded over the years to include member countries of ASEAN, ASEAN+3, and PIF, as well as India and South Africa. In 2008, Indonesia welcomed the participation of Azerbaijan, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Since 2009, Austria has joined the program and in 2010 the Government of Indonesia has given the opportunity for participants from France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Spain and Suriname. This year, Indonesia will invite participant from Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic and Turkey to join the program.

Due to the limited space and the vast amount of interest in the program, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia in cooperation with Indonesian embassies and consulates overseas, hold a series of selection process. Taken into considerations are, among others, the participants' background, gender and regional representation. In order to deepen the participants' understanding of Indonesian arts and culture, and to enhance their skills for the final performance, participants will be divided and assigned by the organising committee to different arts centers for the duration of approximately two and a half month. The arts
centers are located in Bandung, West Java; Denpasar, Bali; Solo, Central Java; Surabaya, East Java; and Bandar Lampung, Lampung.

Participants will live within or around the arts centers, allowing for the chance to experience the local heritage and interact with the local community. Synergy between theory and practices shared inside and outside the art centers would undoubtedly become the driving force for shaping international cultures and norms, and will eventually strengthen regional as well as global
understanding and cooperation at a people-to-people level.

CfP: Diaspora: Religions, Science and Technology in Cultural Context: Dynamics of Change

International Association for the History of Religions Special Conference 2012

Religions, Science and Technology in Cultural Contexts: Dynamics of Change

Venue: Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU)
1-3 March 2012

In current public and academic debates, the complex relationships between "religion" and "science" tend to be reduced into one between monolithic entities. By exploring historical and contemporary interactions between religions, science and technology, a more complex understanding may be reached of the areas and ways in which they overlap, correspond, challenge and conflict with each other.

This conference seeks to explore how religions, science and technology interact and generate change (progressive, reactive, regressive), particularly in relation to such issues as the environment and climate change; the economy; welfare; life expectancy; popular representation;
and sexual equality.

Of particular interest are explorations of dynamic relationships between worldviews/cosmolog ies, socio-cultural practices and technologies; and of "the politics of change", i.e. how different actors seek to convince the public of the benefits of their own approaches or of the detriment of "the others" approaches.

The conference is organized by the Department of Archaeology and Religious Studies of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim.

Registration fee until 1 December 2011 is 250 EUR, which includes conference materials, lunches and refreshments. There will also be bursaries for participants from lower income countries.

Abstracts of 200 words and affiliation details should be submitted by 1st August 2011. For submitting your abstracts and for any type of inquiries, you are welcome to contact the Conference secretary, Filip Ivanovic (filip.ivanovic@ ntnu.no).

CFP. Conference: Studying Conflict and Violence in Central Asia: Academic Traditions and Interdisciplinary Challenges

Call for Proposals
Conference
Studying Conflict and Violence in Central Asia: Academic Traditions and Interdisciplinary Challenges
April 30, 2011
Bishkek, American University of Central Asia

Studying violence and conflict increasingly transgresses disciplinary borders and theoretical boundaries: the complexity of issues requires a dynamic combination of theoretical approaches, interpretative skills, and ways of collecting materials and sources. Analytical and historical interests in studying conflicts and violence, however, are quite different from traditional historical inquires in human behavior: by and large, studies of conflicts are motivated by a pragmatic desire not only to reconstruct the course of tragic events and their consequences but also to understand the causes of such conflicts in order to map out ways of their prevention in the future. It is hard to overestimate the role of the intellectual community in studying conflicts. Yet, predominantly, research on conflicts has been focused on documenting and reporting violent cases.

We would like to draw attention to a different -more self-reflexive - aspect of conflict studies: What are the forms, ways, and methods of problematizing the position of a scholar in studying a conflict? What kind of ethical dilemmas are involved in such a research? How do scholars mediate contradictions between the subjective involvement in studying a particular case, on one hand, and the requirements of objective detachment, impartiality, and objectivity, on the other? How the researcher's ethical position influences the study of a conflict? Is a systematic field-based study of conflicts possible?

We invite experts and scholars working on conflicts share their views, experience, and problems with studying violence.

Please submit your abstract (no more than 300 words) before February 15, 2011.

All proposals would be reviewed; the finalists will be asked to submit their essays by April 1, 2011. Selected articles will be published in Akademicheskii vestnik (Academic Review of AUCA).
