CfP: California Eurasian Studies Kurultai, UCLA 2010

Call for Papers

California Eurasian Studies Kurultai
A Graduate Conference
Saturday, April 10, 2010
University of California, Los Angeles

At present, the field of Eurasian Studies is spread across several traditional disciplinary boundaries. For example, within the discipline of Slavic Studies interest in the broader Eurasian context has been growing in recent years. As scholars of Slavic-Turkic cultural contacts we feel that the opportunities for graduate students and junior scholars to present and develop research in this area are limited. Therefore we are organizing a graduate conference on Eurasian cultural interactions in order for graduate students with these interests to meet and present their current research. The conference will be held in a workshop format; panelists will submit their papers ahead of time, allowing for more coherent and productive discussion during the conference. We are seeking participants who focus on moments of contact and conflict in Eurasia, beyond the established disciplinary boundaries.

Our keynote speaker is Alexander Diener, Associate Professor of Geography at Pepperdine University. In his recent books, One Homeland or Two: Nationalization and Transnationalizatio n of Mongolia's Kazakhs (2009) and Homeland Conceptions and Ethnic Integration Among Kazakhstan's Germans and Koreans (2004), Professor Diener has explored issues of national identity and contact in the multinational context
of present-day Eurasia. Likewise Professor Diener's theoretical orientation of geography will be a useful compromise uniting the many possible directions panelists might take: from linguistics, to culture, to religion, to history.

Submit abstracts of up to 300 words to ucla.kurultai@ gmail.com by January 5, 2010. Complete versions of the accepted papers must be submitted to ucla.kurultai@ gmail.com by April 1, 2010. Unfortunately we cannot provide funding for accommodation or travel.

We look forward to receiving abstracts, and to a productive conference in April.

CfP: The Ottoman Past in the Balkan Present: Music and Mediation, University of Athens

*Call for Papers*

*The Ottoman Past in the Balkan Present: Music and Mediation*

Finnish Institute at Athens &
Department of Turkish and Modern Asian Studies, University of Athens

Athens, 30 September - 2 October 2010

http://www.turkmas.uoa.gr/conf2010

Through the ages, the Balkans has experienced various political, cultural and social phases. The peninsula has been conceptualised in a number of different, often competing and contrasted, ways (Byzantine, Ottoman, Balkan, the East, Eastern Europe) in academic and other discourses. However, in one way or another, the long period of Ottoman rule constitutes an integral aspect of all those perceptions.

In the aforementioned processes, music has often played a central role, either in a direct or an indirect way: music and its representations mediate national ideologies and various viewpoints, such as Orientalism, Balkanism and Occidentalism, which have a particular relationship with history in the Balkans. Simultaneously, music is mediated through space and time, through various means of documentation and transmission (orality, visual arts, photographs, written text, scores and recordings).

Against this background and in the light of the current political expansion of the EU in the Balkan area, the exploration of issues related to cultural identity and relations to the Ottoman past gains more prominence and requires a critical, interdisciplinary dialogue. In particular, the changes that the EU expansion will bring about to the existing structures of Balkan societies, cultures and cultural policies from a musical point of view remain to be addressed.

This conference welcomes innovative interdisciplinary (e.g. ethnomusicology, history, anthropology, cultural studies) papers addressing the following topics:

- How are Orientalism, Balkanism and Occidentalism expressed and constituted through music and its representations in the Balkans
- Nationalism mediated through music and *vice versa*
- Music, propaganda and the media: radio, television, the press and the Internet
- Beyond music: analysing Balkan soundscapes as products of the past

Abstracts (max 300 words) of papers and poster presentations should be submitted by February 15, 2010 to the following email address: conf2010@turkmas.uoa.gr

The languages of the conference are English and Greek. Please specify possible AV needs. All abstracts will be reviewed and authors will be notified about the results by April 14, 2010.

5 PHD STUDENT POSITIONS IN BASIC SCIENCES, Chalmers, Sweden

Reference number 2009/212

Application deadline 2010-02-15

Basic Sciences
– an area that is fundamental to Chalmers and seven promising young researchers
What it can do for the world

Providing a nursery for the pure sciences, this area seeks to take responsibility for the continued progress and development of the university’s scientific foundation. Providing deep insight within core disciplines, the basic sciences are also a source of nourishment to the applied sciences and, ultimately, to society at large.

What we’re building on
Pure physics, mathematics, astronomy, chemistry and computer science provide a large part of our platform. We are an eclectic group of researchers dedicated to answering the calls of our chosen sciences. Some are leading experts in such specialised fields that our closest colleagues are on the other side of the planet. This is the nature of studying the universe.

Our fundamental physics research group addresses questions within elementary particle physics and mathematical physics. And in particular, within string theory and supersymmetric field theories, where both formal issues and future applications in other bordering fields are investigated. Engaged in large experimental facilities such as CERN in Geneva and GSI/FAIR in Darmstadt, the group also explores subatomic physics, nuclear astrophysics, and many-body systems.

The research we perform in Mathematics comprises complex analytic geometry, algebraic geometry, harmonic analysis, geometric measure theory, analytic number theory, and discrete mathematics – or probability theory. We also have close collaborations with theoretical computer science in the areas of combinatorics, discrete mathematics, probability and logic.

The Radio Astronomy and Astrophysics group works closely with the Swedish National Facility for Radio Astronomy at Onsala Space Observatory. Areas of research include the evolution of galaxies with emphasis on starbursts and active galactic nuclei, cosmology, formation of stars and planets, late stages of stellar evolution, and astrochemistry.

The Theoretical Chemistry group focuses on fundamental perspectives on principle chemical reactions such as catalysis, high-temperature corrosion, and bio-nano-photo-voltaics. Areas of research also include contributions to fundamental quantum chemistry and an “octet rule” is developed for predicting new superconducting materials.

Our research in Theoretical Computer Science is within the areas of algorithms, logic, formalization of mathematics, and programming language theory. Our research is performed in close contact with neighbouring sciences, such as mathematics, philosophy, biology, and linguistics.

Where would you take it next?
If you are drawn to understanding the laws of the universe, if you think that your research might help us to fortify our foundations within one or more of the fundamental sciences, then please don’t hesitate in sending us your Assistant Professor or PhD application. We’re looking forward to hearing from you.

Process Overview

Conference: Roma, Ashkali and Balkan-Egyptians, Giessen, 22.1.2010

Since the 1990ies, a growing concern in both the media and academia emerged regarding the situation of Roma in Eastern Europe due to the fact that they became, in countries in transition, a target and victim of nationalism resulting in the worsening of the groups’ living conditions, especially in comparison with the majority society. This is also the case in former Yugoslavia, specifically after the wars of the Nineties. Since 1999, if one mentions Roma in Kosovo but also in Serbia
and Macedonia, “Ashkali and Egyptians” has to be added for reason of specification. All three groups are referred to as “Gypsies” by the majority society and were expelled from Kosovo in 1999 and 2004.

Not only in Kosovo but also in the neighbouring countries such as Serbia, Montenegro and Macedonia, members of all three communities are living as refugees from Kosovo or citizens of the country. As yet, only few scholars have discussed the issue of the nation building of Egyptians and the dilemma they are facing in a society predominantly Albanian, Serbian or Macedonian.

This conference aims at discussing PhD projects regarding the history and anthropology of Roma, Ashkali and Egyptians in former Yugoslavia.

From 1 January 2010, for new PhD applicants there will be one application process for admission to the PhD programme and University and for PhD scholarships. The combined application form will be available from late 2009 on the Faculty of Graduate Research Website
www.victoria.ac.nz/fgr/prospective-phds/scholarships.aspx

Such applications must be accompanied by clear support from supervisors.

*How and when do students learn of the decision?*
Offers of Victoria Phd Scholarships will be made approximately six weeks after each closing date in March, July and November of the year of application. If you are unsuccessful you will be notified of this and if you are on the researve list by email in the first instance. Please provide a clear and correct
email address.

*What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?*
Scholarship recipients shall be required to devote themselves full-time to their programme of research during the tenure of the scholarship and may not hold a position of emolument without the approval of the University Scholarships Committee. Approval may be given for scholarship recipients to undertake paid employment (usually tutoring) for up to a maximum of 600 hours in any one calendar year. All requests to undertake part-time employment must be supported in writing by the supervisor. Once the period of tenure of a scholarship has commenced, the University
Scholarships Committee may, at its sole discretion, grant a scholarship recipient a deferment of their scholarship for a period not exceeding one year. In most cases such a deferment will coincide with a formal suspension from their PhD enrolment.
