Career Development Fellowship in Anti Tuberculosis Campaign

TDR Career Development Fellowship:
Interactive Learning Production with an emphasis on Tuberculosis (in collaboration with the Wellcome Trust)

The Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) invites applications from persons from the developing countries (applicants from Asia are particularly encouraged to apply) for a 12-month fellowship concerning the production of interactive training and distance learning packages. The training will involve a placement working at the Wellcome Trust headquarters in London. Following
completion of the training programme, the Fellow is expected to return to the home institute and make full use of both the training, technology and products produced during the term of the Fellowship, and to actively promote the use of all such products, as well as wide application of remote or stand-alone learning elements and packages in their home country.

Summary of the Training Programme and Activities Under the supervision of the staff of the Publishing Group - International Health, Wellcome Trust, the Fellow will be involved in the following activities:

1. Comprehensive work on the production of electronically- published interactive IEC products, especially compact discs, to include.

a. Taking a lead role in project management;
b. Scoping, identifying and locating basic resources and specialised content;
c. Writing new content and designing of content to suit target audience(s);
d. Helping ensure accuracy and quality of content;
e. Contributing to production of images (still and moving), animations, graphics, etc;
f. Assisting and advising in the structured learning aspects;
g. Helping pre-test and de-bug products.

2. Identifying relevant and useful sources of basic resources and compile an annotated database for use by TDR and the Wellcome Trust.

3. Liaising with other similar operations and agencies in London, Geneva and elsewhere and help establish collaborative working arrangements and partnerships.

4. Promoting TDR activities at all levels with the aim of improving tropical disease research in their home nations, including preparation of electronically- published teaching materials, technology exchange and transfer, workshop planning, and to help strengthen coordination and communication among all relevant agencies and institutions in their home country and region.

5. Supporting TDR/HQ activities in the region as requested by TDR/HQ, including preparation of reports for TDR's Research Strengthening Group (RSG), Scientific & Technical Advisory Committee (STAC), and the Joint Coordinating Board (JCB).

Conditions
The Fellowship will be a time-limited, post-graduate training opportunity funded by TDR within the programme's Research Capability Strengthening initiatives. The Fellowship will be located in London and may require short-term travel to TDR, Geneva. The monthly stipend will be set at US$ (to be decided) per month, in addition to other benefits. International travel and other extraneous travel costs will be determined by and be he responsibility of TDR, decided in collaboration with the Wellcome Trust. The Fellowship is planned to start in early 2007, at a date to be negotiated.

Eligibility
Applications are requested from nationals of developing countries, particularly those from Asia, where research on TB is undertaken and/or where the disease is highly prevalent. Individuals should be employed or involved in Ministries of Health, academic or research institutions, or non-governmental organisations active in the health education and training fields. They should hold a graduate
qualification in communications, health education or similar discipline, or have equivalent experience in the clear and effective packaging and presentation of information. Preference will be given to candidates under 35 years old holding an advanced (Master's level) degree in the their field of expertise, which should preferably be in the life sciences or medicine. Candidates should have broad experience in scientific or medical writing, be well-organised, able to work to
deadlines and to work well in a multicultural team environment. The ability to conceive, write and create information and educational material tailored to specific audiences is essential. Multimedia skills would be an asset, in particular the ability to work in cross-platform computerised environments. Knowledge of standard
multimedia production software would also be advantageous. An excellent knowledge of English, both written and spoken, is a prerequisite. Candidates should ideally have previous experience in conceptualising, research, writing, compiling and packaging health education and training materials.

7. A list of the applicant's publications and other abstracts or presentations.

8. A letter of recommendation from two senior scientists/professo rs that includes their address, telephone and fax numbers and e-mail addresses. (Please include scanned copy with the application) .

9. A brief explanation of how this Fellowship and the products that you will learn to develop and produce will be of use in your future work and disease research and control efforts in your country. (Must be endorsed by home institute director or supervisor)

Applicants from countries requiring national endorsement should submit their applications through proper government channels. A copy of all applications should be sent to the WHO Representative' s Office in their home country for information purposes.
