British Embassy and British Council Competition - Promoting the Millenium Development Goals

‘We all want a better world, but what can we do to achieve it?’

At international level this question has been addressed by the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), (see http://ukinromania. fco.gov.uk/ en/working- with-romania/ development). The eight MDGs range from halving global poverty and hunger to protecting the environment, improving health and sanitation and tackling illiteracy and discrimination against women. They were introduced as part of a wider attempt to encourage the international community to stop talking about making a difference in the developing world and join forces to start doing something about it.

As a promoter of the MDGs, the British Embassy will organise an event on 25th September, which aims at raising awareness of these goals and what we can do to reach them. This event will gather important personalities from the Romanian political and social affairs scene, and will include a workshop for young people.

If you want to participate in these workshops, which will be held in Bucharest, Iasi and Cluj-Napoca, please choose one of the MDGs and submit your ideas (in Romanian or English) on how your chosen Goal can be met to one of the following e-mail addresses:

For Bucharest and surroundings: brit.intern@ ines.ro;

For Iasi and Moldova: bc.iasi@britishcoun cil.ro;

For Cluj-Napoca and Transilvania: bc.cluj@britishcoun cil.ro.

The deadline for submission of entries is 15th September 2008. All entries received after this date will not be taken into consideration. The format of your proposals is up to you. Essays (no more than 1500 words), paintings, photographs, PowerPoint presentations and video clips are all welcome. The best finalists from each region (six each from Bucharest, Iasi and Cluj-Napoca) will participate in the workshop on the 25th September, when the national winner will be announced.

Fantastic prizes for the best entries are up for grabs!

Best of luck!
