PhD: Technologies associated with Creation of Electronic Monitoring Systems

Within the PRTLI project NEMBES a PhD position has become available to study the technologies associated with the creation of electronic monitoring systems based on thin film lamination techniques and interconnection using inkjet printing and other appropriate low cost packaging technologies. An entire autonomous system will be integrated into a low profile format which is low cost and which contains a combination of three dimensional integrated circuits, stand alone power supplies, energy harvesting systems and RF communications systems.

In this technology, functional systems will be created by assembling devices from different technological backgrounds (e.g. sensors, memories, microcontrollers, communications devices etc) to form a functional system for monitoring specific parameters (yet to be defined) in hospitals and other buildings. System integration will be done into a thin form factor which will require the development of new process techniques for the interconnection of thinned die and three dimensional ICs as well as the creation of low cost manufacturable interconnect on paper or polymer substrates.

This Project is funded by the PRTLI -4 project NEMBES and relates to the creation of mixed technology autonomous sensor systems for use in various environments such as
Monitoring staff and equipment in hospital environments;
Monitoring and controlling the environment and people flow in buildings and;
Providing information to drivers and council planning officers on road conditions and traffic congestion issues.

A PhD Student with skills in the development of technological processes and a circuit design and systems integration background would be ideal for this position.
