The program grows out of an acute awareness of the need for more rigorous interdisciplinary study of peace and war and for deeper understanding of how peacebuilding can address political, ethnic, and religious violence. Graduates are credentialed in one of the four disciplines and fully acquainted with the research questions and findings of interdisciplinary peace research. Application guidelines »
The Ph.D. program prepares students in research methodologies associated with the disciplines of history, political science, psychology, and sociology. Students also undertake interdisciplinary study on the causes of armed conflict, the conditions necessary for peace, and the ingredients for effective peacebuilding.
Advisors
Kroc faculty provide the distinctive interdisciplinary knowledge of peace research, while departmental faculty provide methodological depth from a single discipline. The core interdisciplinary courses of the doctoral program are similar for all peace studies doctoral students. Research methods vary according to the disciplinary partnership students choose.
Career paths
This program prepares graduates for interdisciplinary research and teaching in peace studies; for positions in the peace and conflict subfields of history, political science, psychology, and sociology; and for work as peacebuilding practitioners employed by intergovernmental or nongovernmental organizations.
