PhD Information and Knowledge Society at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya
As a research centre, the Internet Interdisciplinary Institute (IN3) plays home and offers support to the *PhD on the Information and Knowledge Society Programme*, the only PhD offered by the *UOC* (Universitat Oberta de Catalunya). Offered for the first time in 2000, this programme was one of the first PhDs created in this field of research and, indeed, the first to be offered in its entirety over the internet.
The links between the different social, economic, political and cultural systems mean that the traditional disciplinary barriers have to be overcome so as to be able to conduct a thorough and in-depth analysis. Thus, this PhD programme is based on an *interdisciplinary perspective* that involves different theoretical standpoints and different methodological tools.
The PhD programme for 2009 offers a total of 33 places linked to research groups or researchers on offer. Each of them gives the specific research lines of the PhD theses offered by each research group, the teaching staff in charge, as well as the possible requirements for each place:
- Computer Science and Networking Technologies
- Community and Social Action
- Law and ICT
- eGovernance
- eLearning
- Information Systems
- New Economy
- Technology and health
- Technology and Education System
- Research Programmes
- Risk Negotiation research programme.
NEGRISC
- Gender and the Information Society research
programme
The UOC's research institute, the IN3, offers *10 grants for full-time *PhDs that are carried out physically in its headquarters in Castelldefels' s Mediterranean Technology Park. It carries a stipend and access to travel funds.

PhD Student for viral genomics as an imaginative science, University Nijmegen
PhD Student for viral genomics as an imaginative science Nijmegen, (Gelderland) , 40 hours per week Radboud University Nijmegen
Job description
Between uncertainty and catastrophe: viral genomics as an imaginative science Public audiences and mass media tend to be receptive to the idea that we are heading for anthropogenic (man-made) catastrophes: dramatic events on a global scale that can only be prevented if we (rather drastically) change our behavioural patterns and basic attitudes, - or develop a new generation of technologies and new forms of expertise in order to prevent disaster. This idea gives impetus to a broad variety of current debates, ranging from concerns regarding ecological crises, sea-level
fluctuations and climate change (on the "macro" level) up to concerns over nanotechnology and synthetic biology (on the "micro" level). It is against the backdrop of these developments that viral genomics quickly becomes a research field of eminent importance. Due to a number of social trends such as increase of global mobility (notably air traffic) and of bio-mobility (animals, bacteria, viruses etc.), but also increased population density (notably in large urban centres) and climate change, the urgency of this type of research is bound to increase.
How to detect and counter-act the emergence of new epidemiological threats to the health and well-being of human populations, of new infectious diseases? Experts involved in this field are facing a number of dilemmas. While policy-makers and mass media expect solid knowledge and reliable predictions, viral genomics studies complex developments characterised by high levels of uncertainty that call for an imaginative approach. Moreover, by becoming increasingly involved in the production of synthetic life forms for research purposes, viral genomics itself will affect the boundary zones of life.
The developments outlined above raise a number of questions, such as: what is the role of the catastrophe narrative in the governance of viral threats? How to assess, from a societal perspective, issues involved in research with novel life forms? The PhD researcher will address these issues in an interactive manner, involving viral genomics experts as well as various societal actors. The project will be conducted in close collaboration with VIRGO, a consortium that studies intervention strategies for respiratory virus infections. Output: Ph.D. thesis, articles, lectures (both academic and societal)

PhD Studentship in Microwave Technology, University of Surrey
UK. 3 years Phd studentship commencing in October within The Advanced Technology Institute (ATI). The student will receive a maintenance stipend of £12,600 per year. The student will join the Microwave Research Group in the ATI and will contribute to the UK Silicon Photonics project.
Student will be involved in the design, modelling and measurement of high-speed interconnections fabricated in silicon. Modelling will be done using a combination of circuit and electromagnetic simulators, and measurements made using a vector network analyzer. You will be required to interact with a range of international collaborators in the UK, Europe and the US, and you may be asked to present results of the work at conferences around the world.
Successful candidate will be an Electronic Engineering or Physics graduate, holding a degree in electronic engineering or physics with a minimum upper-second classification.
Brief Project Description
Silicon Photonics promises to revolutionise the next generation of ICs by providing solutions for optical interconnections between chips and circuit boards, optical signal processing, optical sensing, as well as "lab-on-a-chip" biological applications. It also promises low cost optical signal processing chips that will interface with optical fibres brought directly to individual premises to take advantages of the enormous bandwidth of "fibre-to-the-home" technology. Other large bandwidth applications, such as video-on-demand, high speed internet, high definition TV and Internet Protocol TV, may also expand dramatically as a result of this work.
The project will combine state-of-art engineering with novel physics and materials science to develop an integrated silicon-based solution for optoelectronic communications. Key photonic components - detectors, modulators, amplifiers, filters and waveguides, will be developed on silicon platforms using CMOS-compatible processing routes. The ultimate aim will be an integrated silicon photonics module, containing photonic, and associated electronic components on the chip.

CfP: The Term 'Balkan Peninsula', Sofia, 11-12.12.2008
Department for History of Byzantium and the Balkans at Faculty of History in University of Sofia "St. Kliment Ohridski"
is prepraring
R o u n d T a b l e
with the following title and agenda
Two Hundred Years on the Road:
The Term "Balkan Peninsula" (1808-2008)
In 1808 the German geographer Johann August Zeune suggested one of the European peninsu-las to be named "Balkanhalbinsel" . He did this in his work "Gea. Versuch einer wissen-schaftlichen Erdbeschreibung" edited in Berlin. This term which at the beginning of the 19th century had an academic connotation only, was destined to follow an interesting course in the next two hundred years, starting probably as a neutral geographical name, going through a stigmatization and eventually turning into a symbolic crossroad sign between "Europe" and "Non-Europe" .
The bicentennial life of the term "Balkan peninsula / Balkanhalbinsel" reflects at the same time the quests, controversies and delusions characteristic of the mainstream "European history", and the conflicts – military and ideological – affecting the region in the past. The path of the term shows how historical events could be judged and how they should not be evaluated. It also reflects the deep marks left on our peninsula by the big empires, religions and ideologies.
The Round Table organized by the Department for History of Byzantium and the Balkans is devoted to these problems. The discussions of the below mentioned thematic circles will in-clude historians, experts in political sciences, geographers, philologists, journalists and politi-cians. They are intended to reach a better and more accurate understanding of elements of geo-graphical and political language such
as "The Balkans" and "The Balkan Peninsula". At the same time, the Round Table will contribute to the debate whether the term "Southeastern Eu-rope" is a logical transformation of the peninsula's linguistic representation at the beginning of the 21st century and whether it is necessary to give to that region a terminological
connection to the "general European history".
Thematic Circles of the Round Table
1. History of the peninsula's names (terms, origins, authorship, context, etc.)
2. The denomination "Balkans" – use and misuse in the 19th and 20th centuries
3. "The Balkan Peninsula" or "Southeastern Europe"? A gaze into the past and a look into the future
4. "The Balkans", "Southeastern Europe" and the contemporary media – terminological, thematic and contextual aspects
Time and Place: 11-12 December 2008 in the Central building of the University of Sofia. The participants will present papers (up to 15 min) connected to the proposed thematic framework or can be involved with short comments (up to 5 min) during the thematic discussions which are to follow each thematic panel.
The deadline for applications is 1 October 2008. Paper proposals (up to 500 words) should be sent to the following address: balkanroundtable@ clio.uni- sofia.bg

CfP: Philosophy as Literature (A Special Issue of The European Legacy)
Call for Papers: PHILOSOPHY AS LITERATURE
A Special Issue of “The European Legacy”
Guest Editor: Costica Bradatan (The Honors College, Texas Tech University)
“The European Legacy” hereby invites contributions on the topic of “Philosophy as Literature.”
The issue will feature a conversation on the relationship philosophy-literatu re with GIUSEPPE MAZZOTTA (Sterling Professor of the Humanities for Italian, Yale University), ALEXANDER NEHAMAS (Edmund N. Carpenter II Class of 1943 Professor in the Humanities, Princeton University) & SIMON CRITCHLEY (Professor of Philosophy, The New School for Social Research).
“The European Legacy,” published by Routledge, is the official journal of the International Society for the Study of European Ideas:
http://www.tandf. co.uk/journals/ titles/10848770. asp
This special issue is scheduled for late 2009.
CALL FOR PAPERS:
Like novelists, historians or columnists, philosophers, too, are writers. They make sophisticated use of language, and employ – whether deliberately or not – specific rhetorical and stylistic devices, as well as certain repertoires of metaphors, images and symbols. As writers, philosophers also have to adjust their writing to specific audiences, tailor it to serve specific purposes, and strategically choose one genre over another, with all its rules, protocols, and constraints. In short, it is crucial for philosophers – if they are to persuade readers – to advance their ideas following certain aesthetic rules, rhetorical procedures and strategies of persuasion. This has led some authors to speak of “the literariness of philosophical texts” (Berel Lang) as something indistinguishable from the philosophical substance and relevance of those texts.
A writer’s relationship to language, writing and weaving of narratives in general is always complex. For, if we are to believe Heidegger, although “man acts as though he were the shaper and master of language, …in fact language remains the master of man.” Therefore, it might well be the case that – as often happen with writers – philosophers, too, go through some peculiar experiences: sometimes, for example, they become so completely seduced by language that they almost lose themselves in the act of writing and come to utter whatever language compels them to; some other times, they become so deeply caught up in their own discourse that it becomes difficult for them to separate from it: on such occasions they are not very different from those novelists who end up becoming characters in the narratives they are weaving.
The implication is that a work of philosophy might well be seen as a work of (literary) art, as an autonomous world, for whose creation the author’s personal vision, imagination, playfulness and inventiveness play a major role. In other words, according to this view, “The Critique of Pure Reason” is, in a fundamental way, much closer to “Hamlet” or “The Brothers Karamazov” than to, say, “On the Origin of Species.”
With this in mind, some scholars of philosophy have been in a position to say that philosophy is nothing other than literature. Others, more cautious, have allowed philosophy to be literature only to some degree or under circumstances. Then, there are, of course, those for whom philosophy does not have anything to do with literature.
We invite submissions dealing with the multifaceted relationship between philosophy and literature, some aspects of which have been pointed to above. Interdisciplinary approaches (combining, for example, philosophy, literary theory and intellectual history) are particularly encouraged.
Here are only some of the possible topics:
- The employment of literary categories (genre, tropes, narrative, plot, point of view, etc.) in the production of philosophical texts
- The genres of philosophical writing (dialogue, treatise, meditation, journal article, etc) and their significance for the content of those writings; how exactly the adoption of a certain genre shapes the philosophizing in question
- Philosophical styles: styles of writing / styles of philosophizing; “the anatomy of the philosophical style” (Berel Lang)
- The variety of literary practices in the history of philosophy
- The philosophers’ rhetoric; philosophy of rhetoric / rhetoric of philosophy
- Canons and canonization in the history of philosophy
- Author/authorship/ authority in the production of philosophical texts; author’s “voice”; the use of personae, masks, masquerades;
- Philosophy as expression of the self (philosophy and autobiography)
- The art of the “literary philosophers” (Plato, Augustine, Giordano Bruno, Vico, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer, Kierkegaard, Wittgenstein, Heidegger, Unamuno, Benjamin, Sartre, Camus, Cioran, etc)
- Recent philosophizing on the relationship philosophy-literatu re (contributions dedicated to the work of Jacques Derrida, Richard Rorty, Paul Ricoeur, Hans-Georg Gadamer, Theodor Adorno, Stanley Cavell, Alexander Nehamas, Slavoj Zizek, Jean-Luc Nancy, Berel Lang, Iris Murdoch, Simon Critchley, etc)
- Literary theorists/historian s on the relationship philosophy-literatu re (contributions dedicated to the work of Mikhail Bakhtin, Roland Barthes, Rene Wellek, Wolfgang Iser, Hayden White, Giuseppe Mazzotta, Umberto Eco, etc)
SUBMISSIONS GUIDELINES:
Deadline for submissions: January 1, 2009
Length: 6000 words
All articles and reviews submitted to “The European Legacy” undergo peer-review. Manuscripts and Notes, typed double-spaced, should be submitted to the Guest Editor as e-mail attachments, using WordPerfect or Microsoft Word. Graduate Scholarship Program in Economics, University of Tsukuba, Japon
I am very pleased to welcome you to the Program in Policy Management at the University of Tsukuba. Our Program has been operating from April 1995 and it is the oldest Partner Program in Japan of the Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program, a large scholarship program funded by the Government of Japan and managed by the World Bank Institute in Washington. In addition to that sponsorship, which ensures the award of ten scholarships to successful applicants to our Program, we hold similar arrangements with the Inter-American Development Bank.
Throughout these past thirteen years we have received 69 scholars from 36 developing countries ranging from Armenia to Zimbabwe. The Program is aimed at young professionals working in the government sector or in organizations of public interest and dealing with policymaking on issues of economic and social development. Most of our graduates return to their countries to take over positions of high responsibility in these areas while some go on to pursue Ph.D. degrees in high-level academic institutions.
The level of instruction, teaching resources, and research environment are of a very high level. In addition our Program makes an extra effort to stress the special characteristics of the East Asian experience of development, and we believe this has been well appreciated by scholars taking part in the Program.
Last, but not least, we are located in the Science City of Tsukuba, a technopolis established in 1987 and that embodies the spirit of cooperation between Japanese private and government sectors for the sake of economic development.Tsukuba is a very progressive and pleasant city that is just 45 minutes away (by express train) from Tokyo, itself one of the most metropolis in the world.I invite you to look thoroughly at our web site and to write us (wbgsp@dpipe.tsukuba.ac.jp) if you are interested or have further questions.

Program for international lawyers, judges, and law professors - Santa Clara University School of Law
Santa Clara University School of Law offers a unique program for international lawyers, judges, and law professors that will lead to an LLM degree in United States law.
Building on the institution' s extensive and pioneering involvement in international law education, Santa Clara offers the chance to experience the evolving law culture of the United States from the campus in Silicon Valley, one of the most dynamic centers of commerce and learning in the world. The program offers not only courses at the law school, but also social and professional contact with leading law authorities, judges and scholars.
The LLM in U.S. Law degree program provides participants with a great deal of flexibility in fashioning a program to meet their professional interests. Alternatively, a candidate may choose to focus their studies into one of three specialized areas. These specializations are Intellectual Property/High Tech Law, Human Rights/Public Interest Law, and International and Comparative Law.
A significant aspect of the LLM program is the inclusion of a special session on U.S. law. This unique summer program is designed specifically for international lawyers, judges, professors, and other law professionals interested in studying the U.S. law systems.
This three-week, intensive session provides an introduction to U.S. law practice for practitioners who received their initial law degree outside the United States. The session also provides a foundation for those practitioners coming to the United States to study for a graduate law degree. The session is a prerequisite to studies for the LLM in U.S. Law degree and takes place immediately before the start of the fall semester.

PhD position on extrasolar planets at Leiden Observatory
PhD position at Leiden Observatory on extrasolar planets
A 4-year PhD position is available at Leiden Observatory in the field of extrasolar planets. The student will search for and characterise planets transiting cool red dwarf stars. Planet transits have proven to give unique and extraordinary insights
into the physical and atmospheric properties of hot, gaseous giant planets. Transits of much smaller, potentially rocky planets (such as the Earth) can be studied towards red dwarf stars. This is possible due to the significantly smaller size of
these cool dwarfs compared to stars of solar type. Several planets have recently been discovered around red dwarfs, including a Super-Earth (possibly within the star's habitable zone), and one transiting hot Neptune. Now is the time to specifically target red dwarfs for transits, and utilise the full potential of the transit method. The student will mainly be working on analysis and follow-up of the WFCAM M-dwarf Transit Survey, which has been awarded 200 nights of observing time on the 4m UKIRT telescope to our international team.
For this project we seek excellent and enthusiastic candidates, who are highly interested in observational astronomy. The astronomy department at Leiden is internationally oriented and hosts about 40 graduate students of several nationalities. Further information about the department can be found at
www.strw.leidenuniv .nl.
Applicants should contact Dr. Snellen at the address below for further information. Applicants should have, or soon obtain, a masters degree in astronomy or in physics with a strong astronomy component. Complete applications, including curriculum vitae (with a list of courses and grades), two letters of reference, and a letter explaining your interest in the project, should be sent by the 8st of September 2008 to:

PUBLICATION: Loneliness: Human Nature and the Need for Social Connections
Book release: August 2008
ISBN#978-0-393- 06170-3
John T. Cacioppo & William Patrick
Feeling cut off from others now and then is part of the human condition. By exploring this seemingly commonplace experience, John Cacioppo's pioneering research gives us a fundamentally new way of understanding human nature and ourselves. His sophisticated studies relying on brain imaging, analysis of blood pressure, immune
response, stress hormones, behavior, and even gene expression, show that human beings are simply far more intertwined and interdependent · physiologically as well as psychologically · than our cultural assumptions have ever allowed us to acknowledge.
Bringing urgency to the message, Cacioppo's findings also show that prolonged loneliness can be as harmful to your health as smoking or obesity. On the flip side, they demonstrate the therapeutic power of social connection, and point the way toward making that healing balm available to everyone.
Cacioppo has worked with science writer William Patrick to trace the evolution of these tandem forces, showing how for our primitive ancestors, survival depended not on greater brawn, but on greater commitments to and from each other. Serving as a prompt to repair frayed social bonds, the pain of loneliness engendered a fear
response so powerfully disruptive that even now, millions of years later, a persistent sense of rejection or isolation can impair DNA transcription in our immune cells. This disruption also impairs thinking, will power, and perseverance, as well as our ability to read social signals and exercise social skills. It also limits our ability to internally regulate our emotions · all of which can combine
to trap us in self-defeating behaviors that reinforce the very isolation and rejection that we dread.
Loneliness shows each of us how to overcome this feedback loop of defensive behaviors to achieve better health and greater happiness. For society, the potential pay off is the greater prosperity and social cohesion that follows from increased social trust.
Ultimately, Loneliness demonstrates the irrationality of our culture's intense focus on competition and individualism at the expense of family and community. It makes the case that the unit of one is actually an inadequate measure, even when it comes to the health and well being of the individual.
John Cacioppo is the Tiffany and Margaret Blake Distinguished Service Professor at the University of Chicago, and past President of the Association for Psychological Science. He lives in Chicago. William Patrick, formerly the science editor at Harvard University Press, is editor in chief of The Journal of Life Sciences. He lives in Ipswich, Massachusetts.
What Others Are Saying About Loneliness: Human Nature and the Need for Social Connection
"This wise, beautifully written, and often funny book brings the underlying science of social ties to life. It is a tour de force on one of the most significant known influences on human health. Shelley E. Taylor, Distinguished Professor, Department of Psychology, University of California, Los Angeles, and author of The Tending Instinct: Women, Men, and the Biology of Relationships.
"Both heartbreaking and illuminating, this fascinating book describes what psychologists and neuroscientists have discovered about our fundamental need to belong to others and the dire consequences of belonging only to ourselves. A masterful blend of biological and social science, Loneliness is one of the most
important books about the human condition to appear in a decade. Daniel Gilbert, professor of psychology, Harvard University, and author of Stumbling on Happiness
"Just as hunger prevents us from starving and pain causes us to retreat from physical danger, the authors help us see that loneliness is a symptom of our basic need to connect. . . . This fascinating, complex, and yet highly accessible exploration reminds us that humans are inherently social creatures and that no child or adult can develop properly in the absence of strong social bonds. Melinda Blau, coauthor of Secrets of the Baby Whisperer, Secrets of the Baby Whisperer for Toddlers, and The Baby Whisperer Solves All Your Problems
"Based on years of research, this magnificent exposé discusses the loneliness many people feel, advising them to reach out to others. Our species naturally reciprocates social gestures." Frans de Waal, author of Our Inner Ape
"I never imagined that one book could explain so much about human nature. And yet this scientific exploration does not diminish us. Instead, it exalts our simple humanity. Loneliness is a beautiful message of human connection and a beautiful book." Sidney Poitier, Academy Award' winning actor and author of The Measure of a Man
"After reading this book you'll never want to be lonely again -- nor will you have to be." Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, C. S. and D. J. Davidson Professor of Psychology and Management, Claremont Graduate University, and author of Flow
