PhD scholarship in metabolisms studies and development of sens

Denmark. Department of Micro- and Nanotechnology are offering 1 PhD scholarship in the LiMeS project:

In humans the number of metabolites amounts to about 2500 and can be assumed to be about the same in plants. Since metabolites are involved in all cellular processes, the knowledge of their concentration profiles in time and space is a key to understand cellular processes. Although the majority of metabolic pathways and transport processes are known, the over-all balance of metabolites in a cell in different states and the influence of this balance on cellular functions are poorly understood. The challenge ahead is to develop novel tools, which allow measurement of metabolite fluctuations in living cells, relate them to physiological changes and model the metabolic pathways involved.

Many animal and human diseases are caused by malfunction of metabolic or signal pathways. An example is neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's, which apparently involve the improper function of glutamate, the predominant excitatory neurotransmitter. Another example is that a precise knowledge of pH in the endocytotic pathway in cancer cells will provide an opportunity for developing drug
delivery systems for cancer treatment. Furthermore Reactive Oxygen Species, ROS, are involved in a variety of diseases and represent a third example where the development of anti-oxidant therapeutics could benefit from in vivo monitoring of ROS. Finally, targeted fertilization of crop plants is a biotechnological prerequisite for a modern, efficient and sustainable agriculture.

The project LiMeS (Time-resolved metabolite quantifications in living cells using optical nanosensors) is a interdisciplinary collaboration between researchers at the Danish Universities: Technical University of Denmark (DTU), University of Copenhagen (KU), and University of Southern Denmark (SDU). LiMeS seek to combine competences to construct a versatile technology platform with the vision of achieving nanosensors, which is applicable to any analyte in cells of any organism.

At DTU, Department of Micro- and Nanotechnology we are offering 1 PhD scholarship in the LiMeS project:

A Ph.D. Scholarship in design and synthesis of nanoparticle based sensor systems. Nanoparticles will be synthesized by free radical polymerization. Size control is achieved through the use of microemulsions as reactors. Motivated by knowledge from the drug delivery field on how to obtain particle uptake in cells, particles
surface functionalized with ligands that recognize surface-expressed receptors in cells is a synthetic target. PhD scholarship at the Graduate School ITMAN

Denmark. IMM Graduate School ITMAN would like to invite applications a PhD scholarship (1/1) for the project "Mathematical modelling of Bluetongue in the Danish population of ruminants" (cattle and sheep).

IMM Graduate School ITMAN would like to invite applications for a fully funded PhD scholarship (1/1) for the project "Mathematical modelling of Bluetongue in the Danish population of ruminants" (cattle and sheep). The PhD is partly funded by the Danish Dairy Board (Mejeriforeningen) .

The project focuses on the use of mathematical models for predicting the spread of the disease Bluetongue in the Danish population of ruminants. Bluetongue is a notifiable viral disease affecting cattle and sheep and is spread between animals by biting midges. The hypothesis is that the spread of Bluetongue in Denmark can be
predicted by utilising mathematical models, demographic data of the population of ruminants, and the population of midges. These models can be used to predict what is likely to happen with the disease occurrence if various alternative control strategies are adopted (e.g. vaccination and culling strategies).

The 3 year PhD scholarship should be started as soon as possible after September 1st 2008. The PhD student will be enrolled at the Mathematics, Physics and Informatics (MFI) PhD Programme at DTU. For a general guide to the PhD study at DTU, please see

TRAINING COURSE IN HUMAN RIGHTS EDUCATION WITH CHILDREN FOR OMBUDS OFFICES AND ADVOCACY ORGANISATIONS

Developing the competence of staff members working in European ombuds offices and
advocacy organisations on human rights education with children with a specific focus on using Compasito.

European Youth Centre
Budapest
12-19 October 2008

Course presentation

Why a Training Course for Ombuds of fices staff and advocacy organisations on Human Rights Education with Children? The Council of Europe launched a Programme "Building Europe for and with Children" in 2006 with the objective of formulating policy guidelines and establishing good practices in promoting children’s rights and
standing up against violence against children. In 2007, a first training course on human rights education with children took place as a contribution of the Directorate of Youth and Sport to the Council of Europe Programme that follows an integrated approach. The follow up and recommendations produced as a result of this course led to the development of two other training courses on human rights education with children that will take place in October this year. One of them is a training course targeting trainers (A), the other one is targeting professionals and volunteers from
various backgrounds working in European ombuds offices and advocacy organisations (B). The two training courses will be held at the same time and will use COMPASITO - manual on human rights education for children as a focus. This call targets those who are interested in participating in the training course (B).

The Convention of the Rights of the Child was ratified nineteen years ago and accepted by almost every state. This, however, does not mean that children’s rights are respected everywhere. Children are young citizens and ’rights-holders’ of
the present and are competent in formulating solutions for many problems in their life. It’s up to the adults around them whether they have a chance to express their wishes, participate in decisions and learn from their own experiences. However, children, as adults, need competencies to be able to formulate and express their interest and have an impact on their own life and their community. Educational programmes, such as human rights education, help both adults and children to work with each other in partnership with this goal. Human rights education with children is an educational process that builds on children’s active participation by
which they learn about human rights and understand human rights’ issues and understand that they are rights-holders themselves. They adapt and apply these rights in their specific context. Through human rights education children acquire skills and abilities to be able to defend human rights and develop attitudes of respect of equality and dignity.

Human rights education should start at the earliest possible age. This is
why ’COMPASITO’ a manual on human rights education with children’ was developed in 2007. The development of COMPASITO was also proposed and supported by those people working on human rights education and used ’COMPASS’ a manual on human rights
education with young people’. In recent years the Directorate of Youth and Sport has accumulated undisputed experience in human rights education. COMPASITO builds on the philosophy and educational approaches of COMPASS and this firm educational experience.

The training
course will focus on COMPASITO € ’¶ a manual on human rights education with children. It presents background concepts essential to human rights education as well as practical activities and methods for use in various contexts. Building on accumulated experience of non-formal education and youth work, this manual focuses on an age group of 7-13 year old children.

COMPASITO and the training course on human rights education with children primarily target staff members of offices of commissioners of human rights working with children directly.

This training course will be covered from a generous financial contribution from the Government of Finland to the Council of Europe.

Overall aim of the course

To develop the competence of professionals working in ombuds offices and volunteers active in advocacy on human rights issues and to integrate and develop practices of human rights education with children in various contexts and using Compasito as a starting point.

Objectives of the course
- To introduce COMPASITO (the manual on human rights education with children) as a tool for working on human rights education with children;
- To develop the participants’ knowledge and competence in key concepts of human rights education with children;
- To familiarise the participants with the approaches and activities of COMPASITO and how to best use it and adapt various contexts and realities to;
- To discuss and develop the essential competencies, skills and attitudes needed for people working with children;
- To enable participants to develop activities and programmes for further working on human rights education with children, at local and national level;
- To prepare activities for disseminating COMPASITO at local and national level;
- To contribute to the development of a pan-European network of professionals working with children on human rights issues.

Methodology of the course

The training course will introduce and be based on COMPASITO € ’¶ a manual on human rights education with children. The working methods of the course will facilitate the exchange of information and will provide training for the development of new competencies. The experiences of the participants will serve as a basis for reflection and discussion of good practice. Contributions by participants and invited experts will give a broad picture of existing theories, initiatives, projects and approaches to working with children on human rights education. Input and discussions in plenary sessions, thematic working groups and workshops on different approaches to human rights education with children will provide further knowledge and understanding of the issue. A particular emphasis will be put on exchanging non formal educational practices in various settings.

COMPASITO
- the manual on human rights education with children will be extensively used throughout the course. COMPASITO documents different methods, educational approaches and practices used in human rights education with children. Furthermore, COMPASITO contains practical activities and thematic material needed for this type of work.

Profile of participants

The course will bring together 25 participants who are:
- Staff members of ombuds offices working on human rights issues who are interested in developing their competencies in working with children.
- Staff members of other governmental institutions working with children directly and are strongly interested in developing their competencies in human rights education.
- Volunteers of organizations active in advocacy and lobbying on human rights issues, particularly issues of childrens' rights and human rights education for children, and interested in developing their competencies on practising human rights

Research in the area of wireless communication networks has recently experienced an unprecedented embrace by both industry and academia. Interest has been fueled by advances that promise exponential gains in the error performance of networks with reduced structure, little central oversight, and limited computational capabilities. The research area's utility and challenging nature is demonstrated both by the contributions from a variety of disciplines, such as information theory, discrete mathematics, game theory and finance, as well as from the effort to unify the above and to bring forth the inherent complexities of multi-terminal communication and
interaction.

In pace with the above challenges, the proposed Thesis will seek to explore the theoretical limitations of network communications, propose novel network coding schemes, present relaying methods and cooperation protocols, and investigate fundamental performance tradeoffs. The research will seek to provide an in-depth and unifying exposition to the complex nature of analyzing, coding, cooperating, controlling and competing in wireless networks, utilizing the intricacies of multi-terminal network theory and the advanced mathematical structures that support network communication and interactions.

Furthermore the proposed research will study advanced telecommunications techniques for opportunistic and cooperative multi-user communications for complex and dynamically changing wireless networks. This is a fascinating area that uses advanced mathematical tools towards analysis and optimization of large-scale networks which can change arbitrarily fast, and in which actions have a strict delay constraint and strict practicality limitations.

The proposed Ph.D. Thesis is highly conducive to inter-disciplinary
collaboration, it builds on a diverse set of theoretical breakthroughs - random matrix theory - division algebras - combinatorics - algebraic geometry) and has been strongly embraced by technology - sensor networks - decentralized/ opportunistic networks - network control-communicati on-cooperation) .

At the end of the day, the proposed work will aim to provide for theoretical breakthroughs as well as practical solutions to problems in complex wireless networks. The work is a natural continuation of our current research which has recently provided near optimal solutions for a variety of wireless network settings.

CfP: Albanian Journal of Politics -- Special Issue on Ethnic Politic

Albanian Journal of Politics

Call for Papers
For a special issue on
Ethnic Politics: Pre-, During and Post-conflict Perspectives

With the end of Cold War, ethnicity with its multi-dimensional character has become a salient source of strife within and between states, thus profoundly affecting both domestic and transnational politics across the world, especially that of developing world. The effects of ethnic identity are felt at micro- and macro levels of decision making. It affects the choices of individuals, groups of individuals and decision-makers in a series of arenas: political, economic, and military. As the human toll as result of internal and external ethnic conflicts is increasing every day, so does the concern of political scientists trying to understand and identify its roots and persistency; its interaction with other political, economic and military factors; and the methods that best end or mitigate ethnic conflict. While questions such as how ethnic conflict affects political stability, establishment and consolidation of democracy, economic development, and security and safety have been considered in the discipline, there is still room for further exploration of these issues as no broad consensus exists.

Albanian Journal of Politics is seeking contributions for a special issue addressing the implications of ethnicity in contemporary politics. Of particular interest are articles focusing on the roots of ethnic conflict, conflict resolution, and reconstruction and nation-building in the aftermath of ethnic conflict. Articles from political science's sub-disciplines are encouraged although interdisciplinary manuscripts will also be considered.

A list of possible themes discussing ethnic conflict either in general or within specific cultural, geographical and/or institutional settings, are listed below.

• Ethnicity and violent conflict
• Ethnic conflict and institutions
• Transnational ethnic conflict: interstate, spillover and diffusioon
• Ethnic violence and economic development
• Ethnic conflict and civil society
• Resolution of ethnic conflict
• Post-ethnic conflict nation-building

These themes are meant as examples. A broader range of themes addressing ethnic violence and ethnic conflict resolution will be considered by the Editorial Group.

Submission should be sent electronically both to ajp@alpsa.org and adahyso@uwm. edu by November 15, 2008. Selection decisions will be made by February 15, 2009. The final drafts are expected by May 15 2009.

*Colloquium description: *

The subject of the colloquium is returning guest workers from Europe to Eastern Serbia and their influence on the local economy, politics, culture and environment.

It will consist of:

- a week long seminar that will include lecture on the history of the area and its current situation, on the subject of returning economical immigration and on engaged art and art in public space
- a 2-week artist's workshop in which will participate 20 artists, 10 Serb and 10 international,

- Seminar and presentation in Belgrade

The artists will work and exhibit in public spaces in order to allow maximum communication with the returning immigrants and the population that stayed behind. The documentation of interviews with returning immigrants and decision makers done as part of the pre-colloquia research, students' research, the lectures given in the seminars and the artists work will be collected in catalogues and presented in Belgrade to create a reaction on a national level.

*Concept:*

When we speak about communities or countries in transition, we usually refer to economical transition in this we underestimate the abyss that lays before the sides facing each other. The difference rests within the basic concepts (such as truth, time, security, privacy, intimacy, communication, etc.) on which each person builds his/her life. The main discrepancy lies in the grasp of a person as an individual, which is a modern concept, from which grow notions of love, happiness, accomplishment, freedom, etc. Marriage, in this community structure, is one of the institutions that insure its continuum in the same way. Both men and women fill preconditioned roles before and during their married life and in that pay their dues to the community and are held in check by the rumor economy and the threat of
excommunication that would penetrate even their basic means of existence. What happens inside the marriage (form love to neglect or violence) is irrelevant to the surrounding as long as the institution is maintained and therefore is accepted by the partners themselves. As was perceived by one of the community members:

"When you ask men what they think about it, most of the would answer that about intimacy that have never heard but sexually they are very active, great lovers (a legend close to Greek mythology J) and that they can seduce any women. On the other hand, most women would say, with allusive irony, that of intimacy they have long forgotten and that sex they accept as a duty, something they have to "execute" with their man, like preparing lunch, housekeeping or similar things.

[…] in a small town, in which are still performed many old, even pagan customs, in which there is still fear of occultism (Vlah magic) and in which people are still closely (and shallowly) connected with their families, land, past, life revolves around "practicalities" . Most people think: "if I sow the land, it will give birth, if I sow a woman she also will give birth J" and everything will function well on a superficial level because I am a monkey and not a man! If I tough intimacy, it will touch me, which can be extremely fuck up, and I don't wish to have a fucked up life!" (Davor Radulj)

No person or community is located in one end of this scale or another, we are all somewhere in the middle with our fears of losing our economical and emotional security, our standing in society, or our future continuity on the one hand and a wish to become and be loyal to the event of love on the other hand.

It is this diversity that our project aims to map and about which we wish to create a public debate.

*Conditions: *the artists will be provided with accommodations and food and will use local material. An additional sum of up to 75 Euro will be provided for materials.

MA Cultural Tourism @ Leeds Metropolitan University

Cultural Tourism is one of the most important and rapidly expanding economic and social phenomena of the contemporary world. To respond to the professional and intellectual challenges this implies for cultural practitioners, destination managers, heritage site managers, museum curators, policy makers, planners and academics, the Centre for Tourism and Cultural Change at Leeds Metropolitan University has developed an important, innovative and interdisciplinary Master's qualification in Cultural Tourism. The new MA course has been developed by the Centre's staff after consultation with the various organisations which constitute the cultural tourism sector and will draw upon the longstanding research experience and international networks of the CTCC.

New MA Cultural Tourism starting this Autumn

The aim of this new programme is to allow its participants to take an informed position in contemporary theoretical debates and applied policy programmes, focusing on tourism and its relationships with different concepts and expressions of culture. The course is designed to equip students with the knowledge, ideas, and awareness of policy contexts at the local, national and international scale, together with the research skills and relevant practical applications relating to cultural tourism.

"This is a timely moment for a serious Master's degree in Cultural Tourism, as the forces of xenophobia and cultural exclusion threaten to drown out the voices of cultural exchange and cosmopolitan educational experiences. This programme will produce experts and professionals who can help to analyze and manage the challenges of tourism in a globalized world without losing sight of the critical ethical challenges facing all leisure industries today."

Arjun Appadurai, John Dewey Professor in the Social Sciences, The New School, New York

Taught by the academic staff of the Centre for Tourism and Cultural Change, with inputs from our global network of researchers and professionals, the MA will address the most important themes and issues surrounding the relationships between tourism and culture including: The structures and dynamics of international tourism and cultural flows; the social practices and performances of tourists; international tourism and cultural heritage policy; the relationships between tourism and concepts
of modernity, globalisation and colonialism; tangible and intangible heritages and their management; the role of museums and the ways by which cultures are represented; festivals and cultural events; culture and regeneration; tourism as a means of intercultural dialogue.

Through the 'Researching Cultural Tourism' module, a choice of second semester options and, the opportunity to work on a 'live' case study relating to the cultural sector, the course allows students to develop their own interests and skills. And, by undertaking a dissertation the MA will equip participants for future leadership roles in the diverse and dynamic field of cultural tourism and/or develop an opportunity to undertake a PhD at the Centre for Tourism and Cultural Change.

"The new MA in Cultural Tourism deals with many of UNESCO's current key priorities. These include the sustainable management of tangible and intangible heritage and the vital area of inter-cultural dialogue. As a global organisation, UNESCO recognises the strong links between tourism, culture and development. Through exploring these relationships on a world-wide basis, best practice can be developed which benefits both local communities and tourists. I welcome the establishment of this new
course as a contribution to maximising the opportunities that cultural tourism can offer." Barbara Woroncow OBE, Deputy Chair, UK National Commission for UNESCO

Culture Committee

Through the acquisition of knowledge and skills students will be able to move into a range of career opportunities in the cultural tourism sector; heritage management, tourism / cultural policy, international development and research.

The CTCC welcomes applicants progressing from undergraduate qualifications in the social sciences and humanities, as well as from more applied and inter-disciplinary undergraduate programmes such as tourism management. The course is also designed to meet the career development needs of professionals from organisations and government
agencies concerned with the sustainable development of tourism, museums, heritage sites, and the cultural sectors.

"The Centre for Tourism and Cultural Change at Leeds Metropolitan University is already a magnet internationally for top-notch graduate students and scholars interested in the interdisciplinary study of tourism, both the theoretical issues relevant to it and its application. I am thus very happy to see that the Centre has developed its MA program in Cultural Tourism, which in addition to including the Centre's interdisicplinary theoretical and practical focus, promises the study of
tourism as a cross-cultural and inter-cultural practice with important implications not just for scholars, but especially for tourism professionals, who must try to mediate in a sustainable way between local identities and needs and the expectations of tourists. The new MA course will further enhance the Centre's excellent reputation world wide." Professor Shelley Baranowski, Vice President International
Commission for the History of Travel and Tourism, University of Akron, USA

"I fully support this new development. The MA in Cultural Tourism will be an important opportunity for students to learn more about the complex relationships between tourism and culture." Ning Wang, Professor of Sociology, Sun Yat Sen University, Guangzhou, China
