CfP for the Spring 2010 issue on Secularization - "Identity Studies"

Identity Studies is apeer-reviewed multi-disciplinary academic journal founded in the framework of the SCOPES (Swiss National Science Foundation) Project "Social Sciences in Changing Contexts: the Case of Georgia".

The first issue, published in 2009, contained materials dedicated to the re-thinking of the theory of nationalism, specifically in the context of Georgia.

The second, forthcoming issue will be devoted to the critical assessment of secularization.

Secularizationhas been regarded for a long time as a correlative process of modernization, along with the processes of rationalization, bureaucratization etc. The first problem connected with it is the multiplemeaning of the term: does secularization mean the decline of religion? Or the separation of secular and sacred spheres? Or transference of the sacred to the secular realm? But there is even a more
problematic issue - dissenting voices havebeen becoming stronger and stronger, arguing against the usefulness of the concept, pointing to the numerous phenomena of the survival and even renaissanceof religion in the modern world. Of special interest for the journal is the analysis of the role of religion in post-socialist societies, but more general theoretic reflections on secularization are also welcome.

Article manuscripts should be 20 to 30 double-spaced type written pages in English, including endnotes. The Journal conforms to the Chicago Manual of Style. Please send the abstracts before 20th January, 2010. Deadline for the final draft – 15th February, 2010. The target date for publication is 1st April,2010.

The doctoral student will actively participate in a research project with the overall goal to develop a framework for information sharing in supply chains. The research project will include aspects such as to determine an accurate picture and existing benchmark level in terms of SCM integration, information sharing and visibility; to investigate what kind of information organizations want to potentially share with other members of the supply chain, and thus establish a pragmatic picture of the desired levels of supply chain visibility. The project will be done in interaction with industry. A first goal is a licentiate degree. The scientific area for the position is within logistics, supply chain management and operations management. The work will also be undertaken in connection to similar research at the VINNOVA Excellence Centre NGIL (www.ngil.se, Next Generation Innovative Logistics) in Lund, that builds on close cooperation with 15 companies. The work will be undertaken in a department with PhD-students and supervisors working with research on both Supply chain Visibility and other different aspects related to logistics and SCM. Within the position comes duties to work with teaching and administration 20% of the time.

Eligibility
Employment as a Doctoral student can only be granted if you have been accepted to the postgraduate student program. Acceptance to the postgraduate student program is based on the estimated ability to perform well in your postgraduate studies. This is also one of the basic criteria for employment. Furthermore you need a valid university degree at advanced level (MSc) within a relevant study program.

Selection
The selection of applicants will be based on an assessment of the ability of the applicant to benefit from their studies. The applicant’s ability to benefit from their studies will be judged mainly on their academic results at undergraduate (BSc) and advanced (MSc) level.
Special attention will be paid to the following:
1. Knowledge and skills relevant to the proposed area of research. These may be demonstrated by written documents or a personal interview.
2. The assessed ability of the applicant to carry out independent research, and his or her ability to formulate and tackle scientific problems. The assessment can be based on the applicant’s master’s dissertation and discussions with the applicant.
3. Verbal and written communication skills in Swedish and English
4. Other experience of relevance to postgraduate studies, e.g. professional experience.

For this particular position a Master-degree in Engineering corresponding to 270 ECTS (including Bachelor) is required. Preferred type of education would be M Sc in Industrial Management and Engineering (I), Mechanical Engineering (M) or similar education with specialisation in logistics or Supply chain management. (Also 2 year Master programs in logistics or supply chain management would be relevant). Further studies in Information system is positively evaluated. For this position an interest for qualitative (e.g. case research) and cross-disciplinary research is preferable. Research results are to be presented and published internationally, as well as nationally, which makes the ability of oral and written communication in both English and Swedish of great importance. Because the position includes a certain amount of teaching and administration (approximately 20%), personal, pedagogical and administrative ability will be taken into account. As our courses partly are given in Swedish, ability to teach in Swedish is positively evaluated. Personal ‘fit’ with the position will be taken into consideration.

As a Doctoral student you will mainly be working with you research project, but you can also be given more general tasks within the department i.e. teaching, research and administrative work, in accordance with the regulations. Rules for employment as a Doctoral student is stated in "The Higher Education Ordinance (SFS 1998:80), Chapter 5".

Call for papers for the Spring 2009 issue on secularization - "Identity Studies"

Identity Studies

Call for papers for the Spring 2009 issue on secularization

Identity Studies is a peer-reviewed multi-disciplinary academic journal founded in the framework of the SCOPES (Swiss National Science Foundation) Project "Social Sciences in Changing Contexts: the Case of Georgia".

The first issue, published in 2009, contained materials dedicated to the re-thinking of the theory of nationalism, specifically in the context of Georgia.

The second, forthcoming issue will be devoted to the critical assessment of secularization.

Secularization has been regarded for a long time as a correlative process of modernization, along with the processes of rationalization, beaurocratization etc. The first problem connected with it is the multiple meaning of the term: does secularization mean the decline of religion? Or the separation of secular and sacred spheres? Or transference of the sacred to the secular realm? But there is even a more problematic issue - dissenting voices have been becoming stronger and stronger, arguing against the usefulness of the concept, pointing to the numerous phenomena of the survival and even renaissance of religion in the modern world.

The target date for publication is 1st April, 2010.

Process and Product Design post-graduate program at TU Eindhoven

The Process and Product Designers Course is a two year program which gives you the PDEng degree (not a PhD Title) when you finish.

In the first year of the program, detailed attention is given to building up knowledge and bridging the gap between theory and practice. To create a broadly based, top-level interdisciplinary program, the basic component is formed by a coherent set of courses, in which group assignments and teamwork play central roles. All courses are purpose-made for this designer's program, and are given mainly by lecturers from industry. All courses in the program are taught in English, but an optional Dutch language course is also offered.

Technological design projects are carried out in the second year. These are challenging projects - carried out in collaboration with industry over twelve months - with a high reality value that are aimed at developing the trainee design engineers' abilities. The projects involve reaching a specific design objective within a restricted period of time and with limited means. Students will be coached by design engineers from industry and by university staff with clear and relevant design experience. The projects are monitored by project planning, regular progress meetings and monthly project management meetings.

To apply for our PPD Course you need to hold a Masters Degree (MSc), preferably in Chemical Engineering, or at least have a firm background in Chemical Engineering. Candidates without the proper background will not be considered by our Selection Committee. The complete application procedure and requirements can be found on the following webpage – http://www.3tu.nl/en/education/sai/programmes/ppd/application/

For your information:

To guarantee the quality of the program, the PPD selection committee applies strict selection criteria. Candidates must be among the top 25% of their discipline. Next to excellent grades, their motivation and personality is extremely important.

In order for our selection committee to consider your application, we would need the following information:
For an application we expect a letter with motivation and extended Curriculum Vitae, a copy of your diplomas, a list of taken courses with marks, one or two recommendation letters and a copy of your passport together with a passport photograph. A proof of English is important (e.g. IELST). Your diploma and list of followed courses must be translated officially into English.

Depending on the country of origin (and visa / work permit requirements) , the application procedure roughly takes two to three months. Therefore, the nearest possible date to enrol the program would be 1 April (we have 2 start dates each year: 1 October and 1 April)

60 ECTS (1 year) or 120 ECTS (2 years)

Degree - please notice that the one-year-version leads to a degree comparable to a Swedish "magisterexamen". The Swedish National Agency for Higher Education has decided (spring 2007) that the English translation for the Swedish degree of "magister" should be "Degree of Master (One Year)". The two-years-version leads to a "Degree of Master (Two Years)".

Autumn 2010:
Programme Start: August 30, 2010
Programme End: June, 2012 (if you choose the 1-year-programme it end is June, 2011)
Rate of Studies: Full time
Type of Programme: Master's level
Language of Instruction: English
Campus: Distance education - the programme is offered via the Internet

The education fulfils the goals set by the Swedish Higher Education Act.

Introduction

The Master of Informatics programme exists in two versions, one that is 60 ECTS credit points (1 year) and one that is 120 ECTS credit points (2 years), if they are studied at full speed. If the student want to receive an international Masters degree the student has to choose the two-year-version. Students who apply to and complete the one-year-Informatics program are eligible to apply for the second year of the Master of Informatics programme, if they wish to continue studying after finishing the one-year-programme.

1 YEAR
This is a one year Master of Informatics programme which is offered entirely as distance education. The education language for this programme is English. The Master of Informatics is a multidisciplinary programme. It combines perspectives focusing on the social construction of technology in design and use with perspectives focusing on software engineering and ICT product design processes, and brings these perspectives together in exploring issues of relevance for theory and practice concerning ICT design. Through individual field studies of design practice and ICT in use, these different perspectives are combined, explored and forged into a broader and deeper understanding of ICT as part of everyday life and society.

2 YEARS
This is a two-year Master of Informatics programme which is offered entirely as distance education.

Aim
The aim of the programme is dual: to prepare students for an international research career as well as for future work in the area of design and development of ICT.

Contents
The Master of Informatics programme has its roots in the Scandinavian tradition of participatory design of technology, and has been developed within a pedagogical framework of work-integrated learning. An important feature of the programme is therefore a series of project-oriented courses where the students are expected to do fieldwork and various forms of prototyping in connection with one or more work places, where theories and methods can be tested and contested. The aim is to provide opportunities for experiences which are relevant for future research, work and development of ICT in a multi-disciplinary context. Teaching is carried out in the form of video-recorded and/or mp3 transmitted lectures, and seminars, discussions and supervision offered via the Internet. The students are expected to be able to work both individually and in groups, depending on the type of assignments within each course. Group assign¬ments are normally carried out by cooperating at a distance through the digital learning platform and other available supportive technologies. Individual and group experiences of computer support for cooperative work, gained in this way during different courses, are reflected on within the framework of the education, and may thus offer inspiration for further research as well as future development projects.

USA: UC Irvine School of Law - Half-Tuition Scholarship

*UC Irvine School of Law Announces New Half-Tuition Scholarships for Next Year's Entering Class

*University of California, Irvine School of Law will provide generous scholarships for its entire class of students arriving in August 2010, which will help ensure the high caliber of its second class.

Funded by private donations, these scholarships will provide all new students with at least 50% of their annual tuition payments through each of their three years at the Law School.

The Law School's pledge of generous scholarships for the second class follows upon last year's grant of privately funded scholarships to the school's Inaugural Class, the Class of 2012, which received full-tuition scholarships for three years. That class of 60 students, which arrived in August 2009, was comparable to classes of top 20 law schools in terms of median grades and LSAT scores. UC Irvine School of Law accepted only 4 percent of applicants for its Inaugural Class, which was the lowest
acceptance rate in the country.

"Privately funded scholarships for our second class of students, the Class of 2013, will help us maintain the high quality of our student body and keep us clearly in the realm of a top 20 law school in our second year of operation," said Dean Erwin Chemerinsky. "We are seeking and receiving generous support from the entire Southern California legal community for these scholarships. "

Tuition --- including professional fees and other campus fees --- for the second class during the 2010-2011 school year is expected to be about $40,000 for in-state students and about $50,000 for those out of state. The Class of 2013 is expected to have approximately 80 students; the Law School will slowly expand to its ultimate goal of 200 students per class.

All students in the Class of 2013 are also guaranteed on-campus housing at UC Irvine, though they will be responsible for their own housing and living expenses. Other forms of financial aid, including guaranteed federal loans, will also be available to help cover tuition costs and other expenses.

Post-doctoral position Mechanosensitive channels in plants

A 2-years post-doctoral position Mechanosensitive channels in plants

A 24-month post-doctoral position in the area of ion channel physiology funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR) is available starting April 2010. The host group “Membrane Transporters and Signalling Laboratory” http://www.isv.cnrs-gif.fr/isv/recherche/hbb/hbb.html) belong to the "Institut des Sciences du Végétal" (ISV) located on the CNRS campus of Gif sur Yvette, at 30 km south west of Paris.

Although plants respond to a wide variety of mechanical stimuli, and many mechanosensitive channel activities have been characterized in plant membranes using the patch-clamp method, the molecular nature of mechanoperception in plant systems has remained elusive. We recently showed that the MSL9 and MSL10 proteins relatives of the E. coli MscS (Mechanosensitive channel of Small conductance) might function cooperatively and provide mechanosensitive channel activities at the plasma membrane
of Arabidopsis root cells (Curr. Biol., 18: 730-734, 2008; Plant Signaling & Behavior, 3: 726-729, 2008).

The first objective of the project is to characterize the electrophysiologica l properties of MSL9, MSL10 and other members of the MSL family (homologous system and bilayer). This part will be done in close collaboration with A. Ghazi 's lab (IBBMC, Orsay). The second objective will be to enlighten the functions of the MSL channels as sensor of vibrations in aerial part of the plant. This will be conducted by a
multidisciplinary approach involving, electrophysiology, molecular biology
and modelling in cooperation with other partners of the project. Salary ~ 2000€/month

Applicants should hold a PhD and have a good experience in electrophysiology and, possibly, in molecular biology. A background in plant biology would be an added value but is not required. English but not French is required.

Candidates should send a CV with a brief summary of research experience, a list of publications and the names and addresses of 3 contact information referees to Jean-Marie Frachisse (frachisse@isv. cnrs-gif. fr). institu t des sciences du végétal
