CfP: Common Issues and Recent Trends in Balkan Historiography, Istanbul Bilgi University and IFEA (Istanbul)

Call for Papers

for a workshop titled COMMON ISSUES AND RECENT TRENDS IN BALKAN HISTORIOGRAPHY I: Towards a Comparative Review of Awakening/Renaissan ce Discourse, between 02 and 04 July 2010 in Istanbul, organized by EHESS (Paris), Istanbul Bilgi University and IFEA (Istanbul).

As a common metaphor in Balkan historiography the terms renaissance/ rebirth and awakening – with counterparts in different languages of the region – are widely used in a rather problematic way; the terms simultaneously mean both the rebirth (renaissance) or awakening of the (primordial) ever-existing 'nation' dormant for many centuries, and Enlightenment in the framework of modernization or more precisely 'Westernization'.

The double-edged character of the concepts of rebirth and awakening have always existed in the historiographies of nation states in general: the “Enlightenment” aspect implied by the term refers to a process of eliminating traditional values seen as counterpoised to 'modern' ones. However, the essentialist understanding of a dormant nation constructs the main adhesive elements out of traditional values - albeit usually in a romanticized and often distorted or invented form.

In this workshop, which is scheduled as the first one in a series of workshops bringing historians from the Balkans together every year to discuss a common issue and recent developments in the historiography, young scholars from different Balkan countries will meet for three days to discuss the place of this 'awakening' discourse in the historiography of each country while depicting the institutional and structural framework and recent (especially revisionist) trends.

A more specific, geographical- thematic, focus of this year's workshop will be the 'Albanian renaissance' (Rilindja). In this framework, the participants are expected to read papers on

1. Rilindja in the (socialist and post-socialist) historiography in Albania and Kosovo, and/or

2. the place of Albanian Rilindja in the historiography of the other (especially neighboring) Balkan countries, and/or

3. comparison of the place of Rilindija in one country with the 'awakening' discourse of that country,

4. study of the awakening/rebirth discourse in any individual Balkan country, and

5. comparative studies of awakening discourses in different Balkan countries.

The papers, which can then be revised after the workshop in accordance with the discussions and feedback, are planned to be published as a collected volume of essays.

The conference organizers will cover the travel and accommodation costs for participants.

To apply for this workshop please send an abstract (max. 250 words) and a brief CV both to bbilmez@bilgi. edu.tr and Nathalie.Clayer@ ehess.fr.The deadline for the submission of abstracts is 15 May 2010. The authors of selected papers will be informed by 23 May 2010.

PhD/postdoc in History, Stichting Internationaal Instituut voor Sociale Geschiedenis

Application Deadline: June 3, 2010*

The International Institute of Social History (IISH) is the world’s largest documentation and research centre in the field of social history. Since its foundation in 1935, the institute has dedicated itself to the collection, preservation and availability of the heritage of social movements worldwide. The institute is independent and reliable, which makes it a natural depository of the frequently threatened cultural heritage of the labour movement and other emancipatory groups and currents. The research department of the institute focuses on the history of labour relations and organizes international projects in this field. The collection (archives, library and audio-visual materials) takes up well over 30 miles of shelf room. The IISH is an institute that comes under the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW).

The International Institute of Social History is looking for a

PhD Student (f/m)
(38 hours per week)

A four years PhD grant has been offered by The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) to a junior researcher affiliated to the International Institute of Social History (IISH) to write a doctoral dissertation on the social history of labour in the Iranian oil industry and participate in the IISH’s activities.

And a Postdoctoral Fellow (f/m) (38 hours per week)

A two years postdoctoral fellowship grant has been offered by The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) to a recently PhD defended researcher affiliated to the International Institute of Social History to write a manuscript on the social history of labour in the Iranian oil industry and participate in the IISH’s activities.

Project information
The International Institute of Social History has launched a grand project on the centurial social history of labour in the Iranian oil industry, studied by a team of five PhD and Post-Doctoral researchers. The purpose of this project is to develop a social history of labour in the Iranian oil industry during hundred years since its discovery in the southern region of Iran.

The discovery of oil in Iran in 1908 created new social, political, economic and even cultural realities at local, national, regional and international levels. Now a century on, Iran’s geopolitical role and significance continue to grow. In many fundamental ways, the commodity oil, and those producing it, has played a central role in shaping a model of development, of social mores and behaviours, of political and social relations in Iran, and beyond.

The oil industry in Iran has been formed within the network of several intertwined formative relations that have undergone major changes over the course of the twentieth century. Labour relations in Iran, especially in this key industrial sector, have been crafted by a series of changing relations between the national state and a major colonial entity (1908-1954), between the national state and a consortium of multinationals (1954-79), between the national state and the local and national labour force employed in the industry, and between the oil company and its
employees. These relations have, therefore, affected both labour formation and labour relations in substantially diverse ways and levels, at different historical junctures. Evidently, workers' everyday life has immensely influenced their aspirations and activities, both collectively and individually.

The applicants are expected to focus their investigation and analysis on all aspects of labour analysis such as labour formation, relations, migration, composition, mobility, integrations, activism, and living conditions inside and outside of the industrial towns, housing, nutrition, hygiene, health and leisure within a specific period. This study also takes into account the relationship between organised and unorganised labour on the one hand and religion, culture and ethnicity on the other throughout the period under review.

Phd position: Dopant migration and aging processing in semiconductor lasers, heterostructures and nanostructures, Nottingham Trent University

A key element in developing future electronic and nano-technologies is the study of point defects in the component materials: both native defects and impurities like the “dopant” atoms deliberately introduced to control semiconductor properties. As structures shrink into the nano-regime, device reliability and lifetime become increasing issues, the key question being how to make dopants stay where you put them. For example, device failure in certain classes of InGaAsP lasers has been shown to occur due to migration of Zn dopants into the active region. This project will use atomic scale quantum simulations to study migration processes, following recent experiments.

Entry requirement
A first class or upper second class U.K. BSc (Hons) degree (or equivalent) or Masters degree in Physics, Microelectronics (with significant amounts of solid state & band theory, and of semiconductor defect properties), or Chemistry (with significant amounts of structural, solid state and quantum theoretical chemistry).

Phd position: Novel therapeutic vectors towards the therapy of uveal melanoma, Nottingham Trent University

Uveal melanoma has been chosen as a model to engineer a highly innovative immunological vaccine, which can be readily adapted to other cancers. In order to trigger immunity via antigen presenting cells, the team has identified HLA-DR1 and HLA-DR4 restricted peptides derived from Tyrosinase and p53 as novel immunogenic antigens. Unfortunately, peptides on their own show low immunogenicity. This project will look to assess and optimise immunisation strategies using a novel peptide vaccine delivery system constructed from nanoengineered scaffolds. The results from this study will provide a highly innovative approach to the formulation and delivery of immunotherapeutic cancer vaccines.

Entry requirement

Phd position: Non-equilibrium behaviour in model soft materials, Nottingham Trent University

When long-chain polymer molecules are added to a suspension of spherical microparticles, an attractive “depletion force” arises, the range and strength of which are tuneable through the length and concentration of the polymer respectively. This controllability makes such systems a model soft material and an experimentally accessible test-bed for traditional condensed matter process, e.g. crystallisation and phase separation. This project will investigate the dynamics of colloid-polymer mixtures in several very well controlled scenarios: the formation and subsequent collapse of transient gels, the phase behaviour that occurs during dilution experiments and during evaporation of either droplets or bulk samples.

Phd position: Novel Functional Germanates, Nottingham Trent University

Germanium chemistry has received little attention until recently. A few porous GeO2-based frameworks have been synthesised. They have topologies which cannot be realised for SiO2, due to differences in Ge-O-Ge and Si-O-Si bond angles. Furthermore Ge can exhibit variable co-ordination numbers, which may exist simultaneously within a single material, leading to enormous structural diversity.

Many germanate ions are also stable under very high temperature conditions meaning that highly ordered ceramic germanates are also synthetically possible; porous materials may even be precursors to the formation of ceramics. The aims of this project are to synthesise porous lanthanide germanates (analogues to aluminosilicate zeolites) and condensed lanthanide germanate ceramics. Materials will be investigated structurally and physically; they will then be evaluated in terms of their chemical (e.g. catalytic) properties, as well as their luminescent and magnetic properties for potential use in environmental, industrial and bio-sensor applications.

Phd position: Novel Switching Mechanisms in Multistable Nematic Liquid Crystal Displays, Nottingham Trent University

A conventional electronic paper display requires a continuous applied voltage to maintain an image but in a bistable display the voltage only needs to be applied when the image is changed. We have previously shown that micrometer-scale wells with particular sidewall morphologies can be used to cause nematic liquid crystals to align in several distinct stable optical textures that have similar energies: this is multistable alignment. In this project recently discovered switching mechanisms in these classes of devices will be investigated with the aim of achieving fast, low-voltage switching between stable states that show uniform greylevels.

Phd position: Atom-Resolved Single-Molecule Electronics and Spintronics, University College London

A PhD studentship is available for measuring charge transport through individual molecules using a novel organic-molecule/semiconductor approach utilising cryogenic ultrahigh vacuum scanning tunnelling microscopy/spectroscopy.

Electron transport through micro- and nano-structured materials has been the subject of intense research for decades; this research forms the basis of current electronics technology and the continuing dramatic improvements in miniaturisation and device performance. At the same time, electron flow within individual molecules is fundamental to a wide range of naturally-occurring chemical and biological processes: Chemical reactions between molecules occur when there is an energetically favourable path for electrons to flow, and important examples of charge transfer in biological molecules occur in photosynthesis and in mechanisms of DNA damage and repair. Therefore, developing the ability to measure charge and spin transport through individual molecules is an exciting field of basic nanoscience research that lies at the interface between traditional areas of research in condensed matter physics and chemistry, with the potential to impact other areas such as molecular biology. Moreover, the ability to control electron flow through molecules holds promise for the creation of the next generation of technology; from the ultimate level of device miniaturisation (single-molecule device components) to ultrasensitive sensors and novel devices such as a quantum computer.

To measure electron transport through a single molecule it is necessary to connect to it at least two macroscopic leads. The measured conductance reflects not only the properties of the molecule itself, but, crucially, the nature of the electrode-molecule contacts. Precisely controlling the electrical contacts to a single molecule has proven to be an extremely difficult challenge, resulting in dramatic variations in experimental results and large discrepancies between experiment and theory. In this project, the student will obtain reproducible conductance measurements of simple, but extremely well characterised single-molecule junctions using a new approach where individual organic molecules are attached to semiconductor surfaces and probed using scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS). The student will collaborate with theoreticians within the LCN and at the Universities of Sydney and Newcastle in Australia. Measurement facilities include four cryogenic ultrahigh vacuum STM systems capable of measuring with atomic-resolution at temperatures between 1.6 – 1000 Kelvin, and in a vectorable magnetic field of up to 6 Tesla. This range of capabilities is unique within the UK.

Funding Notes
Applicants should be highly motivated and have gained (or expect to gain) a first or upper second class honours degree (or equivalent) in physics, chemistry or materials science. This is a demanding experimental research project and therefore laboratory or research experience is highly desirable.

This project will be supervised by Dr Steven Schofield, an EPSRC research fellow in the London Centre for Nanotechnology and the School of Physical Sciences and Astronomy at University College London. Please direct informal enquiries to s.schofield@ucl.ac.uk, quoting reference SRS/04/10.

Phd position: Visual Cognition in Virtual Environments: An Interdisciplinary Approach, University of Hull

This fully funded PhD studentship provides an opportunity for a UK/EU student to undertake novel, multidisciplinary research that combines human perception in Psychology with 3D visualisation in Computer Science.

The successful candidate will work closely with a group of experts in these fields. The objective of this PhD project is to produce cutting-edge research on human information processing in virtual environments. In most research on visual cognition, the stimuli are presented on a 2D display. This creates a gap between laboratory research and the real-world because in the real-world these perceptual tasks are usually performed in 3D.

Furthermore, observers often interact with the targets through their own bodily motions. For example, natural head movement will normally define the observer’s view-point, rather than using a mouse or keyboard. Thus a number of important questions cannot be answered by traditional methods. To overcome these limitations, the student will conduct experiments in the state-of-the-art Hull Immersive Visualization Environment (HIVE), which provides large scale 3D displays and high performance motion tracking systems.

This environment allows stimuli to be presented with a high degree of realism, and with more natural interaction through motion tracking. Research projects are likely to focus to one or more of the following topics, depending on the applicant’s background and interests:

* Face/object recognition in virtual environments
* Fast extraction of statistical information (e.g., age group, mood) from a crowd/scene
* Effects of an observer’s self motion and interaction with visual/haptic feedback
* Target cueing/detection in virtual environments
* Effects of fixation plane on visual search
* Multiple object/face tracking
* Localisation of objects in 3D space

The topic of the 2010 PhD summer school is Social Networking

The PhD summer school on the political economy information and communication
technologies focuses on social networking in 2010. Internet-based communities have existed for more than 20 years, but during the past few years, social networking has become widespread. Worldwide, people connect via the web and extend their social communities beyond what could ever have been realized without the web.

Till now, users of web-based social networking and communities have mainly used traditional computers with large screens. For many users the concept of social networking means always-on, which sets focus on the trend of being able to do social networking also on smart phones and other smaller screens. The transition from the big screen to the small screen in relation to social networking and communities will be one of the issues examined at the PhD summer school. The summer school will concentrate on the interrelationships between the technological, economic, political, and cultural aspects of social networking.

Issues that will be dealt with at the summer school include:
· User generated content and applications
· Mobility and social networks
· Privacy and trust in social networks
· Standards and technical platforms
· New services and applications for mobile devices facilitating social networks
· Business models for social networks
· Regulatory aspects of social networks

The summer school is organized in cooperation with CTIF (Centre for TeleInFrastructure), the CAMMP project (Converged Advanced Mobile Media Platform), and is part of the activities of the Mobile and Wireless Cluster (KMT) located at CMI.

Aim and objectives of the summer school

The aim of the course is to refine the level of knowledge of the participating Ph.D. students on the economic and political structures and mechanisms affecting technology development in the information and communication technology (ICT) area. It also considers the impact of implementation and application of ICTs on the economy and broader social developments. It is a course in the political economy of technology
development with a disciplinary point of departure in economics and social science. This theme is explored at a company (micro), sectoral (meso) and/or societal (macro) level. This will depend on the specific topics chosen in the course. The course targets Ph.D. students with a technology background combined with an economics and/or social science approach and students with an economics and /or social science background focusing on technology development.

Call for Papers
Vol. 5, No. 4 (December 2010)
The Impact of Internet on Politics and Political Science
Guest Editor: Dylan Kissane (CEFAM, France)

Just as the internet has transformed the worlds of information and communication so too is the internet changing the political world. Whether employed as a driver for funding a Presidential race, a low cost media machine for fringe groups, a space for bringing supporters together or even when harnessed as a tool of political propaganda, the Internet is changing the way politics is practiced and, as a result, having a marked impact on what political scientists choose to focus their research upon. In recognition of this impact, in Winter 2010 we publish a special issue devoted to the impact of the internet on politics and political science. All articles which examine the nexus between the internet and politics or the internet and political science are welcome. Authors should ensure that their submissions are original contributions and should not be under consideration for any other publication at the same time.

Authors should send their article directly to the guest editor by email (dylan.kissane@laposte.net) before 1 June 2010.
