Applications are invited for a funded Ph.D. position in the Centre for Health Informatics (CHI), Knowledge and Data Engineering Research Group (KDEG), School of Computer Science and Statistics, Trinity College Dublin. CHI has a history of world-class research in electronic healthcare records, and is now principally interested in clinical decision support, especially in general practice. KDEG enjoys a world-class reputation in the areas of knowledge driven information systems and intelligent systems. The successful candidate will have an excellent academic record (first class primary degree or a postgraduate qualification, e.g. M.Sc.) in Computer Science, or related discipline. They will be highly motivated, with strong communication skills and a demonstrated proficiency in software development. All candidates must be fluent in English, and have good writing skills.
In addition the successful candidate will be able to demonstrate knowledge and experience in one or more of the following areas:
• Probabilistic reasoning (Bayesian networks, causal probabilistic networks, etc.)
• Rule-based systems (e.g. Drools, Jess, etc.)
• Agent-based technologies
• Web-services technologies
• Excellent Java programming skills
Experience in any of the following would be beneficial:
• Clinical decision support systems
• Clinical knowledge representation, clinical coding
• Electronic health care records, OpenEHR
• Industrial/Academic Research
This full-time Ph.D. position is for three years duration, starting in September 2010 and is supported under the EU FP7 TRANSFORM project www.transformproject.eu. The successful candidate will have their academic fees paid in full, and will be awarded a tax-free annual stipend of 18,000 euro.
