Phd position: Novel Switching Mechanisms in Multistable Nematic Liquid Crystal Displays, Nottingham Trent University

A conventional electronic paper display requires a continuous applied voltage to maintain an image but in a bistable display the voltage only needs to be applied when the image is changed. We have previously shown that micrometer-scale wells with particular sidewall morphologies can be used to cause nematic liquid crystals to align in several distinct stable optical textures that have similar energies: this is multistable alignment. In this project recently discovered switching mechanisms in these classes of devices will be investigated with the aim of achieving fast, low-voltage switching between stable states that show uniform greylevels.

Entry requirement
A first class or upper second class U.K. BSc (Hons) degree (or equivalent) or Masters degree in Physics, Electrical/Electronic Engineering or one of the related Physical or Engineering Sciences.

Eligibility
Applications can be accepted from UK/EU and also International students. The minimum English language proficiency requirement for candidates who have not undertaken a higher degree at a UK HE institution is IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 560/iBT 94 - 95.
