MASTER PROGRAM IN EUROPEAN STUDIES at the Bulgarian-Romanian Interuniversity Europe Center (BRIE) in Rousse, Bulgaria
BRIE MISSION STATEMENT
The Danube Bridge connects the towns of Rousse (Bulgaria) and Giurgiu (Romania). The Bulgarian-Romanian Europe Center with sites at BRIE Rousse and BRIE Giurgiu creates a virtual bridge in the educational and research area. The visible result of the cooperation is reflected in the existence of the Master Program in European Studies at BRIE Rousse and the Master Program in European Public Administration at BRIE Giurgiu. BRIE also creates a bridge between South-Eastern and Western Europe as it implements academic strategies for integration and stability together with German and Austrian partner universities and organizations. The institute brings together students from South-Eastern Europe (Albania, Bulgaria, Kosovo, Macedonia, Romania) who learn about the region in the context of European enlargement and integration.
PROGRAM PROFILE
In an enlarging European Union graduates from South-Eastern Europe need to have knowledge about European processes if they want to pursue a successful career. The four semesters of the master program provide students, who already have a bachelor degree in the field of Social Studies or Humanities, with the skills and competences which give them understanding about these processes and prepare them for the challenges of the European labour market. The focus of education falls on the impact of the European enlargement and integration processes, the political, economic and social process of transformation in South-Eastern Europe and on the institutional and
economic nature of the European Union. The courses are held in English and German. In addition, the students have language courses in German and English and can optionally choose to study Bulgarian or Romanian language.
STRUCTURE OF THE PROGRAM
First and second semester: Studying at BRIE Rousse. The semester begins on the 10th of October 2006 Participation in a summer school with lecturers from the Center for European Integration Studies (CEI) at the University of Bonn Third semester: Studying at a German partner university (European University Viadrina Frankfurt/Oder or TU Chemnitz) or at the Austrian partner university (Klagenfurt University) Fourth semester: Studying at BRIE Rousse and preparation of the master thesis.
GRADUATION AND JOB REALIZATION
The degree Master of European Studies is conferred by Rousse University and is recognized by the Academy of Economic Studies Bucharest and the German, respectively the Austrian university by the issuing of a certificate.
The Master Program in European Studies prepares the students for realization in various professional fields. Degree holders have excellent career prospects Europe-wide both at the public and the private sector either in governance of supranational, national or sub-national institutions, or in the management of multinationals and other companies dealing with the European Union.
FEES
Tuition fee is 1450 euro per semester. No tuition fees are charged for the third semester in Germany or in Austria. Reduced tuition fees for: Students with double citizenship (one of which is Bulgarian): 850 euro per semester Students from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Moldova, Romania, Serbia and Montenegro: 450 euro per semester Bulgarian students: 495 BGN per semester.
SCHOLARSHIPS
For 10 students from Bulgaria the Bulgarian Ministry of Education and Science provides subsidies that cover the costs of their tuition, the tax per semester being around 140 BGN. Five Romanian students may benefit from free-of-tuition-fee studies on reciprocity basis in the spirit of the Agreement for cooperation and Mutual Assistance Regarding the Development of the Bulgarian-Romanian Interuniversity
Europe Center BRIE between the Government of Romania and the Government of the Republic of Bulgaria. For other candidates scholarships are available after a review of their application documents.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
Hold or at least be approaching their bachelor degree in the fields of Social Studies or Humanities (fourth-year bachelor students can apply only with their certificate of study performance) Be able to prove adequate language competence for bilingual studies (in English and German) Submit a CV and a letter of motivation Provide a letter of recommendation Fill in the application form.

For candidates outside Bulgaria and Romania the deadline is 16 July 2006, for candidates from Bulgaria and Romania the deadline is 17 September 2006.
The selection of candidates is done by an international selection committee.
