Firma/Institution: Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research Land: Germany Position: Public Sector eingegangen am:07/02/2007
Beschreibung:
The planetary research group of the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research developed and built the science/navigation cameras for the DAWN mission to visit the major asteroids Vesta and Ceres. NASA’s DAWN spacecraft will be launched in summer 2007 and will complete the mission in 2016 at Ceres. The planetary research group is also strongly involved in ESA’s Rosetta mission that will rendezvous a comet in 2014. Information about our research program can be found on the web page: www.mps.mpg. de
We are now looking for a
Planetary Physicist
to support data retrieval and analysis of the
DAWN Framing Cameras
We need support to prepare for the scientific investigations (operations planning), to operate the cameras, and to calibrate the images. Successful candidates are expected to take an active role in the science planning, the development of software (command sequences, time lines), and in the operation of the FC CCD cameras onboard NASA’s DAWN spacecraft. They shall support the scientific mission planning and the calibration pipeline of the cameras. Support and operation of mission and instrument simulation tools and hardware are part of the task. Extended stays in the US (operations center in Los Angeles) have to be supported. Candidates are expected to pursue research in the field of minor planetary bodies in order to support the scientific goals of the DAWN mission.
Qualifications
University degree in physics, experience with space experiments and successful involvement in planetary research. Knowledge of mission simulation software (e.g. SPICE, SOAP), of the interactive data language IDL, and experience in calibration of CCD cameras are of advantage as well as experience with onboard software. Fluent command of English is required.
The position is available immediately for an initial period of two years and may be extended assuming the DAWN mission becomes operational after its launch in summer 2007. The DAWN mission will nominally end in the year 2016. Salary and benefits will be enumerated according to the TVöD scale of the German civil services.
