PhD: Harmonic Mode Locking in Multiwavelength Fabry-Perot Lasers

The focus of the Photonics Theory Group in the Tyndall National Institute is materials and device design and optimisation. Our work also includes a significant experimental component, both within the group and involving external collaborators. We have recently developed new approaches to designing multiwavelength Fabry-Perot lasers and refractive index profiles with tailored group velocity. We are now seeking highly motivated candidates for the following funded research studentship:

Harmonic mode locking in multiwavelength Fabry-Perot lasers:

Our group has developed new approaches to designing multiwavelength Fabry-Perot lasers with precisely tailored optical spectra. Mode locked lasers of this kind will find applications in optical-clock generation, pulse retiming and optical generation of THz radiation. This project will involve device design and modelling as well as experimental work and will involve collaborators within the Tyndall Institute and at Dublin City University. The aim of the project is characterisation and modelling of the mode locked device in order to optimise the repetition rate, pulse shape and timing jitter for applications in future ultrafast optical networks.

Students will contribute as members of a research team that draws on modelling, theoretical and experimental inputs and will work alongside experienced researchers on both projects. Candidates must have a first or upper second class honours degree in physics, electrical engineering, or related discipline.
