Mathematics Applications Consortium for Science and Industry (MACSI) PhD studentship
A graduate studentship is available for up to four years to work under the direction of Professor Andrew Fowler on problems associated with the growth of biofilms in industrial and environmental situations. Applications of these studies will be to groundwater pollution, environmental bioremediation, medical and industrial air and water systems. The position primarily involves the construction and numerical solution of mathematical models to describe the growth of bacterial biofilms in soils and on pipe walls. The student will be part of MACSI, the Mathematics Applications Consortium for Science and Industry, at the University of Limerick.

Candidate Profile
The candidate should hold at least a 2.1 degree in applied mathematics, mathematical bioscience, bioengineering, or a related discipline. In addition, the candidate should be able to work both independently and in a team environment and possess good organisational and communication skills. Appropriate experience in mathematical modelling and numerical computation is desirable.
Stipend
University fees will be covered and the position carries an annual stipend of €18,000 (tax free). Appointment commencing in September 2010 is highly desirable. MACSI at UL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and a stimulating research environment.
