Director, Wirth Institute for Austrian and Central European Studies

The University of Alberta is seeking a Director of the Wirth Institute for Austrian and Central European Studies. The Director will be a respected academic with a strong track record in scholarship and a commitment to multidisciplinary Institute programming in the area of Central European studies. The position will carry with it a tenured academic appointment to the Department of History and Classics within the Faculty of Arts. The Directorship will be effective July 1, 2011 with a term of appointment of five years that may be renewable upon review.

Reporting to the Dean of Arts or designate, the Director will work with an Academic Advisory Board to develop and maintain a program of lectures, conferences, artistic festivals, symposia, exhibitions and other scholarly and cultural events with an Austrian and Central European theme. The Director will also lead the Institute’s academic, cultural and external activities.

Candidates must hold a PhD and should be of sufficient seniority to warrant a tenured appointment at the rank of either Full Professor or Associate Professor, with an academic specialization in the field of Austrian and Habsburg history. Applicants must be fluent in German and have demonstrated administrative, organizational and community outreach experience. An ability to work in an additional Central European language would be an asset.
