Project description
The main aim of this PhD position is to study aerosol-cloud-climate interactions over the Amazon tropical rainforest. The successful candidate will be a part of the project “Amazonian Vegetation Impacts on Aerosols and Clouds” funded by the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet). Key aspects of this experimentally-oriented work include:
1) Prepare for and participate in two intensive experimental aircraft-based field campaigns in the Amazon in 2011 and assist with ground-based measurements between the airborne campaigns.
2) Perform data analysis and process-oriented modeling of the airborne and ground based measurements with special focus on aerosol-cloud-biosphere interactions.
The successful candidate will work within a well-established atmospheric research group at Stockholm University as well as with international partners, mainly from Brazil, Germany and the USA. ITM offers an excellent environment for graduate training in environmental research. The wide spectrum of scientific expertise ranging from atmospheric science through aquatic chemistry and biogeochemistry to ecotoxicology builds the fertile basis for a thriving culture of interdisciplinary exchange and cooperation. With our large staff of experienced scientists, we offer close personal supervision and a wealth of experience to our students. Our extensive network of national and international collaborators opens doors to other perspectives and opportunities.
Terms of employment
The doctoral program is for 4 years (48 months) of full time study. Start preferably during summer–autumn 2010. Salary is according to the Swedish “doktorandanställning”.
Qualifications
We are looking for a person with engineering or technical skills who is interested in experimental work in atmospheric science, and who is willing to work independently and enjoys field work in challenging environments. Previous experience in the fields of aerosol science, meteorology, experimental physics, chemistry or biology is an advantage. Programming skills in the LabView and MATLAB software packages are welcome.
