USA: Harvard Summer School - International Students

Harvard Summer School welcomes international students from abroad and those who are currently studying at other US colleges and universities. International students make up nearly a quarter of our student population and represent approximately 100 nationalities and cultures.

Study Options at the Summer School

English as a Foreign Language
If you would like to increase your English language skills, the Institute for English Language offers a variety of courses at different levels to help you develop oral and written skills. Learn about English language programs.

General Courses
Summer School courses, offered in a wide range of subjects, are open to international students. You can use the course search to find courses.

Course prerequisites. Many courses list prerequisites. Prerequisites are intended to suggest how prepared you should be to succeed in the course. You are not required to provide proof that you have met the prerequisites.

Requirements for Study at the Summer School

English Proficiency
If your primary language is not English, you must provide proof of English proficiency to take courses (except courses in the Institute for English Language Programs). Review the English proficiency requirement to see how to meet the requirement and the deadlines for doing so. If you are requesting an I-20, you must meet this requirement by May 1.

Studying Full Time
An F-1 student visa is required for full-time study (8 undergraduate or graduate credits in the eight-week session, 4 undergraduate or graduate credits in a four-week session, or a noncredit Institute for English Language intensive program). The Summer School issues I-20 certificates for the F-1 student visa to students who register for courses and request the I-20 by May 1. Learn more in Visa Guidelines.

Immunizations
To attend the Summer School while on any type of visa, you must provide proof of immunization. An immunization form must be completed and signed by your health-care provider, and submitted by June 1. See Massachusetts and Harvard University Immunization Regulations.
