PhD Studentship
A Model of Art and Design Practice and Education in Britain: Kingston School of Art, 1930 - 1969
Faculty Art, Design and Architecture
Doctoral Studentship
Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture
The School of Art & Design History, Kingston University, London
The School of Art & Design History at Kingston University is offering a funded full-time studentship, tenable for 3 years (subject to satisfactory progress), commencing November 2008.
£15,000 per annum (EU/UK tuition fee plus a bursary)
This exciting and challenging project aims to critically examine the history of art and design practice at Kingston School of Art as a model of twentieth-century art education in the context of wider national and international developments, from its inception as an independent art school in 1930 to the eve of its transformation into Kingston Polytechnic in 1969.
The focus of the study is on the specific visual, material and spatial practices that contributed to the distinctive creative and intellectual milieu of the art school during these inter and post war years, and on the ways in which these helped shape art and design thinking and education more widely.
The project is designed to enable the student to explore areas of particular interest within the overarching subject and to develop new methodologies which might encompass:
* changing attitudes to professional art and design practice
* the role of the artist and designer
* personal and professional networks and infrastructures
* the impact of new materials, technologies, and opportunities
It is envisaged that this multi-layered and interdisciplinary approach will enable the mapping of the broader economic, social and cultural shifts of the period alongside in-depth case studies of the contributions of individual art and design practitioners. The research will draw upon a wide range of dispersed archival sources, catalogues, architectural plans and designer briefs, images, art and design objects, and oral histories.
You will be jointly supervised by researchers in The Visual and Material Culture Research Centre and The Modern Interior Research Centre (see attached details) who are based at Knight's Park, the site of the former Kingston School of Art. This studentship is part of a larger research project which explores the roots of Kingston's art and design school in the mid nineteenth century under the auspices of South Kensington's Science and Art Department's promotion of art and design for the manufacturing industries, the activities of the Arts and Crafts Movement, and the formation of Kingston's Technical Institute in 1899. The studentship also offers the possibilities of contributing to an exhibition and accompanying publication as part of this project.
Criteria and application process
We are looking for an excellent researcher who has a keen interest in inter and post war art, design and architecture, a good working knowledge of the late nineteenth-century Arts and Crafts Movement and the wider social, economic and cultural history of the twentieth century in Britain, and of concepts of modernity and of new subjectivities.
You would hold a good honours degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline (this may include, but is not limited to, art history, design history, visual and material culture, museum and gallery studies, cultural anthropology) , and usually also a Master's level qualification in an appropriate subject or extensive relevant professional experience.
