CfP: "Economic Reform Partnership Forum for Black Sea"

1st Year Conference

Confronting Economic Reform Challenges in

Defining a Collaborative Future for Black Sea Region

- Project Summary -

The Black Sea region is one of the most strategically important regions in Europe providing, first of all, a major trade link and transit routes for Caspian energy supplies. It forms the core of the vast area that extends from Europe to Central Asia and the Middle East and it is closely related to the unstable Balkans, Caucasus and Caspian regions characterized by common risks and challenges, first and foremost, 'frozen' conflicts and international terrorism.

It will not be an exaggeration to say that the Black Sea region remains one of the most challenging regions in Europe due to its cultural and political heterogeneity, the bipolar legacy, differing interests of the regional and non-regional actors embodied in a multiplicity of external policies. It falls within the competence of different international institutions and security arrangements - the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the European Union (EU), the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) among others.

Countries of the region have rarely experienced security, democracy and economic reform process. They still confront numerous problems including economic underdevelopment and related issues that holds a very important environment for the whole world. The end of bipolarity and the removal of ideological differences between the East and the West opened new windows of opportunity for the Newly-Independent States (NIS) and the region at large. In this scope Ekonomistler Platformu, as an independent research institution and NGO in Turkey wants to realize this project with support of country partners from Black Sea Region Countries.

The Economists' Platform (EkP) and its partners had programmed this project due to these facts and wanted to increase the cooperation between institutions related to Economic Reform (think-tanks, universities, NGOs) in the Black Sea Region. In this scope, EkP wants to offer to the related institutions from Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Georgia, Greece, Moldova, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine, Austria, Belarus, Croatia, and Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, U.S.A. and other related European countries to be a founding organization for the "Economic Reform Partnership Forum for Black Sea (ERPFiBS).

In this scope, the founding meeting for Economic Reform Partnership Forum for Black Sea is planned to be organized during the First Annual Conference in Istanbul in September 2009 in Istanbul. There will be a special session with participation of representative of founder institutions during the First Annual Conference.
