PhD: Nonlinear Optics of Refractive Index Profiles with Tailored Group Velocity

The focus of the Photonics Theory Group in the Tyndall National Institute is materials and device design and optimisation. Our work also includes a significant experimental component, both within the group and involving external collaborators. We have recently developed new approaches to designing multiwavelength Fabry-Perot lasers and refractive index profiles with tailored group velocity. We are now seeking highly motivated candidates for the following funded research studentship:

Nonlinear optics of refractive index profiles with tailored group velocity:

We are currently studying the physics of non-periodic optical potentials that provide multi-wavelength distributed resonances. The resonance structure can be designed to enhance nonlinear effects in photonic devices such as semiconductor optical amplifiers and in optical microcavities. Applications of these devices include wavelength conversion, optical gating and optical delay lines. The aim of this theoretical project is to build models describing nonlinear pulse propagation and frequency conversion in these systems.

Students will contribute as members of a research team that draws on modelling, theoretical and experimental inputs and will work alongside experienced researchers on both projects. Candidates must have a first or upper second class honours degree in physics, electrical engineering, or related discipline.
