The Global Leadership Project: Country Experts Needed

The Global Leadership Project (co-PIs Prof. John Gerring and Erzen Oncel, Boston University) is a new systematic data collection project about political leaders around the globe, funded by the Clinton Global Initiative. This global database project on political leaders (e.g., presidents, prime ministers, cabinet members, executive staff, top judges, and other significant political figures) extends to all sovereign and semi-sovereign nations, and covers a wide variety of questions. The collected data will be freely available online to citizens, policymakers, and academics. A simple user interface will facilitate access for those who wish to check
information for a particular country, to make regional or global comparisons, or to download the entire database for further analysis.

Information for the project will be drawn primarily from an in-depth survey instrument to be filled out by country experts throughout the world. Some questions can be answered using print or web-based sources, and are thus accessible to anyone with reading knowledge of the relevant language. Others require in-depth knowledge of the country, and therefore expert coders are needed.

We are seeking country experts - who might be graduate students, young scholars, or journalists - to fill out the web-based survey instrument for their country of expertise. We will fully attribute credit to the country experts for the country on which they work. There will be an honorarium (scaled according to the size of the country’s political leadership) for the country experts. The job requires an estimate of 30-50 hours of work depending on the size of the country’s political leadership. Each country expert can only undertake work related to his/her country of expertise.

Graduate students with specific country expertise and in-country experts are welcome to apply. Since the research will be conducted through an online survey instrument, country experts may be living in any location; they do not need to be resident in the United States. The project requires country experts for all Middle Eastern and North African countries.

If you are interested in participating in this project, please contact Erzen Oncel at erzeno@bu.edu

CfP: "Travelling Languages: Culture, Communication and Translation i

There is still time to submit an abstract for the forthcoming conference 'Travelling Languages: Culture, Communication and Translation in a Mobile World' as we extended the deadline until 15th July 2010. For more details please see below.

Travelling Languages:

Culture, Communication and Translation in a Mobile World

10th Annual Conference of the International Association of Languages and Intercultural Communication

In association with the Centre for Tourism and Cultural Change,

Leeds Metropolitan University

03-05 December 2010, Leeds, United Kingdom

The world is ever 'on the move'. The opportunities and challenges of both real and virtual travel are very much at the heart of the emergent interdisciplinary field of 'mobilities', which deals with the movement of peoples, objects, capital, information and cultures across an increasingly globalised and apparently borderless world. In the practices, processes and performances of moving - whether for voluntary
leisure, forced migration or economic pragmatism - we are faced with the negotiation and re-negotiation of identities and meaning relating to places and pasts.

Within the increasing complexities of global flows and encounters, intercultural skills and competencies are being challenged and and re-imagined. The vital role of languages and the intricacies of intercultural dialogue have largely remained implicit in the discourses surrounding mobilities. This Conference seeks to interrogate the role of intercultural communication and of languages in the inevitable moments of encounter which arise from all forms of 'motion'.

This international and interdisciplinary event is the 10th anniversary conference of the International Association of Languages and Intercultural Communication (IALIC) and is being organised in association with the Centre for Tourism and Cultural Change. Through this event we aim to bring together many of the sub-themes of previous IALIC conferences and focus upon the issues of culture, communication and translation in a mobile world, including: languages and intercultural communication in local and global education, tourism, hospitality, migration, translation, real and virtual border-crossings.

CALL FOR PAPERS

We are pleased to receive 20 -minute research papers or descriptions of pedagogical practice which address or go beyond the following themes:

* Moving languages - continuities and change;

* Real and virtual border crossings;

* Tourist encounters and communicating with the 'other';

* Tourism's role in inter-cultural dialogue;

* The languages of diasporas and diasporic languages;

* Dealing with dialects and the evolution/dissolution of communities;

* Hospitality and languages of welcome;

* Learning the languages of migration;

* Lingusitic boundaries and socio-cultural inclusions and exclusions;

* 'Located' and 'dislocated' languages and identities;

* Practices and performances of translation.

Please submit an abstract of no more than 500 words including title and full contact details as an electronic file to Jane Wilkinson at IALIC2010@leeds. ac.uk. You may submit your abstract as soon as possible but no later than 17th July 2010.

For further details on the conference please visit:

www.leeds.ac.uk/german/ialic_conference_2010.htm or contact us at IALIC2010@leeds. ac.uk or via emailing to ctcc@leedsmet. ac.uk

CfP: Martor 2010. Anthropology Review. Writings Lost & Found

Call for Papers

MARTOR 2010
The Romanian Peasant Museum Anthropological Review

The Romanian Peasant Museum is seeking contributions for its annual review Martor. The Martor review is an unconventional academic journal established in 1996, with a focus on cultural and visual anthropology, ethnology and museology. You can browse some of its earlier issues here: http://martor.memoria.ro/?location=archive&action=details&id=6

The theme of Martor 2010 issue is Writings Lost & Found / Textes de tiroir. We are looking for academic texts that, for different reasons (other than their quality), have remained unpublished. Either the author has lost interest in the topic, changed perspective and focus, or the topic has gone out of „fashion". It may be that the subject has always been eccentric to the academic's main research themes. Whatever the reason, we are looking for academic texts hidden in your drawers or computer folders.

The subject areas we are accepting are cultural and visual anthropology, ethnology and museology, with a focus on Romania and the surrounding area, Eastern Europe and the Balkans.

As the texts we are expecting should already be in a more or less finalized form, the deadline is short: July 15th, 2010. The texts, in English or French, should not exceed 15.000 characters. High quality images supporting the argument are a plus in the selection process. We encourage early submission in the form of abstracts and expressions of interest. The selected authors will be required to write a very personal introductive paragraph on the history of the text, the interest of the author in the subject and the reasons for the text remaining a drawer text.

Please e-mail your texts and any inquiries to Simina Badica (siminarb@gmail.com).

Looking forward to reading your texts,

Ioana Popescu, Research Director at the Romanian Peasant Museum and Editor of Martor Review

Simina Badica, Researcher at the Romanian Peasant Museum and Editorial Assistant of Martor Review.

Globalizing Eurasia? Impacts on the Region and the World: Dissertation Development Workshop

October 5-7, 2010
Davis Center for Russian & Eurasian Studies
Harvard University

Application Submission Deadline: August 15, 2010

www.ssrc.org/programs/eurasia

THE EURASIA PROGRAM of the Social Science Research Council (SSRC), in partnership with Harvard University's Kathryn W. and Shelby Cullom Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies, invites applications for a three-day interdisciplinary dissertation development workshop for doctoral students.

What factors affect Eurasia and its relationship with the world? The conceptual frameworks associated with globalization invite questions concerning the importance of social and cultural place, the definitions of geographic and conceptual regions, and the nature of national economic institutions, environmental issues, and political identities. To what extent can the conceptual frameworks of globalization enhance our understanding of Eurasia? How can the varied and complex experiences of Eurasia challenge and expand our understanding of globalization?

This dissertation development workshop will convene junior scholars interested in these questions for an intensive workshop led by a group of interdisciplinary senior scholars. The workshop will bring together PhD candidates from across the social science disciplines.

We welcome work ranging from interpretive categories (e.g., empire, state, ethnicity, modernity or authoritarianism) to transnational processes (for example, development, trade, migration, health, terrorism, languages or Diasporas).

Following a workshop format, the meeting will provide opportunities to discuss ideas and research plans, solicit feedback from fellow dissertators and nationally known resource faculty, and enhance scholarly networks and contacts.

For additional details please contact program staff at eurasia@ssrc. org.

Funding is provided by the United States Department of State, Program for Research and Training for Eastern Europe and the Independent States of the Former Soviet Union (Title VIII).

PAO SUMMER CAMPS 2010 IN ITALY AND ROMANIA

The 6th edition of the PAO Architecture Summercamp will be held at two fascinating locations: the Italian city of l´Aquila, and the Romanian village Potoc. These beautiful places will form the background for intense and ambitious "Design to Build"-sessions where exceptional ideas can be created, communicated and built.

PLACE 1: L´AQUILA
The city of l´Aquila is a fantastic, beautiful place high up in the alpine Abruzzo Mountains , 100 km from Rome. After a major earthquake in 2009, there are still many tasks waiting for creative intervention: New "Hot Spots" for the demolished city center, and "Cool Places" for students and young people. In the fantastic medieval city of l´Aquila, however, concerns of Cultural Heritage will be play an eminent role. The summerschool will be organised in cooperation with the University of l´Aquila and it´s students.

PLACE 2: POTOC
The village of Potoc is a remote, quiet settlement close to the city of Timisoara in Southwestern Romania. In 2009, a PAO camp was held there already which prepared an ambitious follow-up project for this year: the re-fitting of the old village school-building into a "House of Creativity". In cooperation with the villagers and local artists, a new scheme for a sustainable culture institution is to be conceived - and put to reality.

DATES
The two-week session in l´Aquila goes from August 30th-September 10th; the two-week session in Potoc from September 13th-September 24th. Interested participants can join both workshops in sequence.

PARTICIPANTS
The workshop adresses students, prospective students, and professionals of architecture, arts, and culture studies alike. The workshop programme includes lectures, design studios, field trips, and a visit to the Venice Architecture Biennale. Prospective international participants will come from Italy, Spain, Romania, Germany, Poland, Ukraine, Egypt and Japan.

MS/PhD Scholarships
Its people are Southeast Asia’s most potent force for progress. Hence, agricultural human resource development has been SEARCA’s primary goal since its establishment. SEARCA is one of the "centers of excellence" established by SEAMEO. As such, SEARCA assists SEAMEO member countries in producing highly trained human resources in agriculture and related sciences to accelerate agricultural and rural development in Southeast Asia.

Two of SEARCA's activities that carry out this mandate are the Graduate Study Program and the University Consortium. Both activities are handled by the Graduate Scholarship Department (GSD).

This degree scholarship was initiated in academic year 1968-69 and aims to ensure the relevance and responsiveness of Southeast Asia's agricultural scientists and professionals to global sustainable development issues.

The program provides support for advanced studies leading to the MS and PhD degrees in agriculture, forestry, and related fields. Thus, SEARCA aims to prepare grantees for positions of leadership in developing economies of SEAMEO member countries.
