This three year studentship is part of a 3.5 year ESRC Large Grant 'Poverty and Social Exclusion in the United Kingdom' which aims to improve the measurement of poverty and social exclusion, and to inform understanding of changes in the nature and extent of poverty and social exclusion since the 1999 survey.� This project will involve over 30 staff at six Universities (Bristol, Glasgow, Heriot-Watt, Open, Queen's (Belfast) and York) and two survey organisations (National Centre for Social Research (NatCen) and the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA)), plus many survey field staff.� For further details see: www.poverty.ac.uk
The PhD studentship will draw upon survey data generated by the current study, together with earlier national poverty surveys conducted since 1968/9, in order to generate longitudinally consistent data on trends in poverty and social exclusion at an individual and household level. This project will contribute to our understanding of changes in the social and demographic profile of poverty over this period and how this relates to wider dimensions of disadvantage and the policies intended to tackle it. The successful candidate will also have opportunities to contribute to the wider project, and to work closely with the wider research team.
The successful applicant will have a relevant undergraduate degree (2.1 or higher), or Masters degree in a relevant subject area. This studentship is offered on a '+3' basis and all eligible candidates must have completed a recognised ESRC research training Masters, see:
