What is Biomedical Informatics?
Advancing Health care, public health and basic science through information technology. Our students have opportunities to study and participate in research in areas such as developing and designing IT Management programs and tools for organizing and assessing health care data in a variety of settings: clinics and hospitals, laboratories, pharmacology and other industries, as well as state and
local health departments.
Biomedical informatics (BMI) is the interdisciplinary, scientific field that studies and pursues the effective uses of biomedical data, information, and knowledge for scientific inquiry, problem solving and decision making, motivated by efforts to improve human health.
o BMI develops, studies and applies theories, methods and processes for the generation, storage, retrieval, use, and sharing of biomedical data, information, and knowledge.
o BMI builds on computing, communication and information sciences and technologies and their application in biomedicine.
o BMI investigates and supports reasoning, modeling, simulation, experimentation and translation across the spectrum from molecules to populations, dealing with a variety of biological systems, bridging basic and clinical research and practice, and the healthcare enterprise.
BMI, recognizing that people are the ultimate users of biomedical information, draws upon the social and behavioral sciences to inform the design and evaluation of technical solutions and the evolution of complex economic, ethical, social, educational, and organizational systems.
What kind of background would I need to work in this area?
Our students come from a variety of backgrounds, but those in the following areas might be most interested:
" Computer Science
" Information Management
" Biochemistry, Biology or Molecular Biology
" Public Health
" Healthcare Management
" Communication or Linguistics
" Geography with work on GIS systems
In addition to working with computers, you will also be working with integrated teams of physicians, nurses and other healthcare personnel; collaborative teams of researchers; government staff and industry representatives. Being interested in helping people solve problems and being able to communicate effectively will be invaluable in this field.
Are there prerequisites to applying?
Our applicants are required to have a university level course in statistics or upper division mathematics and one in computer programming, (most commonly Java programming) . In addition, a GPA of 3.3 and GRE scores of 60% in each of the areas tested.
What is the deadline for applying? All application materials need to be submitted by December 31, 2012 for admission to the program in Fall 2013. We also admit students to our certificate program both in the spring (January) and the fall (August). The deadline for Spring admission is November 1.
