Let me bring to your attention the forthcoming publication of my book:
Nathalie Clayer, /Aux origines du nationalisme albanais. La naissance d’une nation majoritairement musulmane en Europe/.
The Albanian idea slowly emerged from the beginning of the 19th century onwards. From territorial losses to territorial losses, the fate of the Muslims in the European possessions of the Ottoman Empire became the main issue of this emerging idea.
The assertion of an Albanian identity, in the modern sense of the term, developed in these circumstances, but also in relation with the transformations of the Ottoman provincial society. In narrow symbiosis with the other national projects of the area, “Albanianism” became a major political resource in the power struggle within the Empire, as well as in the confrontation between the Empire and the nations-states which had been born from it. It gave rise to a multiplicity of constructions of Albanianness which continue to configure part of Balkans.
