RELATIVISING UNIVERSALISM? – DEBATING THE FUTURE OF HUMAN RIGHTS
The Centre for Global Ethics (University of Birmingham) is pleased to
announce its inaugural Human Rights and Global Ethics Graduate Conference.

The conference will take place 24th – 25th May 2007 at the University of
Birmingham. We invite papers for consideration from graduate students, from all fields dealing with human rights.
Please submit your abstracts for blind review as Word attachments, maximum 500 words, to humanrightsconference@contacts.bham.ac.uk , by 20th April 2007.
Papers that deal with the following questions and topics are welcome:
¨ Is there really a conflict between cultural diversity and universal human
rights?
¨ If so, what is a viable way out of the universalism-cultural relativist
dilemma, both on a theoretical as well as on a practical level
¨ Political implications of universal human rights
¨ Do we need a "third way" after all?
¨ The role of intercultural dialogue in establishing a minimal human rights
framework
¨ The limitations of current international human rights law
¨ Minority and group rights, including women's rights, within the framework of universal human rights.
¨ Has the "War on Terrorism" impeded the human rights movement?
