CfP: Nationalism, East and West: Civic and Ethnic Conceptions of Nationhood
CALL FOR PAPERS
The Association for the Study of Ethnicity and Nationalism (ASEN) is holding its 18th Annual Conference, entitled "Nationalism, East and West: Civic and Ethnic Conceptions of Nationhood", Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, April 15-17, 2008, at the London School of Economics.
It has long been standard in the field of nationalism studies to classify nations according to which principle serves to unify the nation. The distinction between the Western, political type of nationalism, and Eastern, genealogical nationalism as systematised by Hans Kohn in 1945 has been used, extended and adjusted by scholars of
nationalism to conceptualise a framework of "inclusive" nationalism based on citizenship and territory and "exclusive" nationalism based on common ethnic ties and descent. This conference seeks to assess the continuing relevance of this dichotomy in its various forms: its contribution to theoretical work on nationalism, its usefulness for historical interpretation and its value for contemporary policy-making.
The conference will include keynote addresses from leading scholars in the field, along with opportunities for scholars from various disciplines to examine the relevance of ethnic and civic conceptions of nationhood in a series of panel sessions. Suggested themes include:
* Civic and Ethnic Aspects of Nation Formation
* Is Nationalism a European Phenomenon?
* Alternatives to Civic and Ethnic Nationalism
* Experiences of Historical Migrant Nations
* Citizenship and Immigration
* Multiculturalism
The first day will explore the use of the classical dichotomy in theoretical works on nationalism, national identity and nation formation. By considering historical case studies, the development, interaction and conflict of ethnic and civic types of nationalism will be analyzed on the second day.
Historical critiques of and alternatives to dichotomous types like the civic/ethnic and East/West will also be considered. On the third day, the framework of civic and ethnic nationalism will be explored by focussing on contemporary nationalism and approaches to citizenship and immigration.
The 2008 Conference Committee is now calling for papers to be presented on the conference. The application is open to any researcher who is interested in the study of nationalism and/or ethnicity, and PhD students and young scholars are particularly encouraged to apply. The abstracts of the proposed papers should not exceed 500 words and are expected by November 1, 2007. The Committee will notify applicants by November 30, 2007. Please see the ASEN website (www.lse.ac. uk/collections/ ASEN/) for more information and to submit your proposal.
Suggestions for panels and additional themes are also welcome. Papers submitted to the conference will be considered for publication in a special issue of Studies in Ethnicity and Nationalism (SEN).
Please note that ASEN cannot cover travel and accommodation costs. Presenters are expected to register for the conference. Further enquiries are welcome at asen@lse.ac. uk.

CFP: The Pain of Words: Narratives of Suffering in Slavic Cultures (Princeton University)
Call for Conference Papers
THE PAIN OF WORDS:
Narratives of Suffering in Slavic Cultures
Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures
Princeton University
May 9-11, 2008
Recent studies of emotions have pointed to a particular role of pain in shaping identities and narratives. Regardless of their disciplinary affiliations, scholars seem to agree that verbal expressions of pain first of all draw attention to the suffering individual instead of describing the actual experience of pain. Narratives of suffering provide the individual with a powerful symbolic presence. They create
emotionally charged communities. Such narratives also lay the foundation for larger social, political or moral claims.
This link between pain, representation, and subjectivity is well documented in Slavic cultures, where vivid depictions of suffering saturate popular and elite cultures alike. As the young Mayakovski put it, "I am with pain, everywhere." However, this conference wants to move beyond the documenting of omnipresence of pain in Slavic cultures. Instead, we want to explore how social, linguistic, aesthetic, moral, gender, etc. conventions determine specific contents of pain in
different historical periods and different geographical locations. What are the symbolic contexts in which experiences of pain are recognized? To what extent do available cultural practices constrain or encourage certain narrative versions of pain? What gets lost in the process of translating traumatic experience into narratives of suffering? How is the phenomenon of pain used to galvanize individual and group identities, to justify social values, to motivate artistic projects or,
in some cases, to undermine (or generate) political movements? In short, what are those discourses through which Slavic cultures acquire and express their concepts of pain?
We seek to address these problems by bringing together an interdisciplinary and international group of people interested in exploring the value of pain in such diverse fields as history, literature, film, music, performing arts, everyday life, religion, ideology, politics, law, psychology, and history of medicine. We invite
papers to reflect upon the diverse vocabulary of expressions of pain that have been constructed across Slavic space and time. We are also interested in comparative studies that could place Slavic narratives of suffering in larger cultural, historical, or geographical contexts.
We especially encourage submissions that approach concrete textual or ethnographic materials in a theoretically informed way, without reiterating the alleged masochistic fascination of Slavic cultures with pain and suffering.
Please send your abstract (300 words) and CV to by February 1, 2008.
We might be able to offer a limited number of travel subsidies for several foreign presenters. Finalists will be contacted in the middle of February, 2008.
Program committee:
Serguei Oushakine (Princeton), Devin Fore (Princeton), Petre Petrov (Princeton),
Alexander Etkind (Cambridge/Princeto n), Nancy Ries (Institute for Advanced Study).

New Book: Social Policy and International Interventions in SEE
Bob Deacon, Professor of International Social Policy at University of Sheffield, and Paul Stubbs, Senior Research Fellow in the Institute of Economics, Zagreb edited the book Social Policy and International Interventions in South East Europe published by EDWARD ELGAR.
The book investigates the role of international actors in the making of social policy in South East Europe. Introductory chapters on transnationalism and Europeanisation are followed by a series of nine linked case studies depicting research undertaken within the region. The book charts the variable influence that international actors such as formal organisations, non-governmental organisations, consulting companies and individual transnational policy entrepreneurs, have on key policy issues, including pensions, social protection, labour markets, and health. The authors conclude that welfare settlements are a complex product of historical and institutional legacies, the neo-liberal interventions of the World Bank, the emerging impact of the EU, and the crowded international arena resulting from war and post-war reconstruction agendas.
Contributors include: M. Arandarenko, F. Cocozzelli, B. Deacon, M. Gerovska Mitev, P. Golicin, N. Lendvai, R.A. Maglajlic Holicek, M. Novak, L. Pop, E.K. Raidagic, K. Rihar Bajuk, D.A. Sotiropoulos, P. Stubbs, B. Yakut-Cakar, A. Ymeraj, S. Zrincak.

PhD student Nutritional and Microbial Modulation - Wageningen University
PhD student Nutritional and Microbial Modulation Wageningen University and Research Centre Division of Human Nutrition, in a TI Food and Nutrition project. Wageningen, 6700 HB (Gelderland), 38 hours per week
Job description
Title subproject
Effect of nutritional stressors on epithelial injury-signalling secretome in small intestine, and identification of biomarkers of epithelial integrity.
Project description
Within the gut, impaired epithelial integrity is regarded as an important risk factor in the initiation and complex (patho)physiology of common nutrition-related intestinal disorders. This project focuses on the elucidation of relevant biomarkers for gut health as well as a model platform to efficiently discover, select and validate potential gut health-promoting foods, food ingredients, and probiotics in order to facilitate evidence-based nutrition-relevant health claims for consumers.
Increased cell turnover is a hallmark of the stressed and under-performing small intestinal epithelium, indicating that the balanced proliferation and cell death is a sensitive determinant of the integrity and function of the epithelium. The feed-back mechanism and its players at the molecular level that are responsible to maintain this balance are the prime target of this subproject.
The PhD student will perform experiments in animals and humans in order to find and characterise biomolecules that are secreted by the small intestinal epithelium, when this epithelium is damaged by nutrition-related compounds. The mechanism(s) by which these secreted molecules affect the cell turnover of the epithelium will be determined. Relevant biomolecules will be validated as biomarkers for small intestinal epithelial integrity and gut health and used to develop cell line models that enable screening of food compounds with a beneficial effect on small intestinal epithelial integrity.
Requirements
Required education/skills: University Graduate
Main tasks and responsibilities
The PhD student is responsible for:
•contributing to the full project plan
•staying abreast of developments in his scientific discipline by keeping up with the scientific literature in his field and visiting scientific meetings

•supervising of research assistants and students, where appropriate
•delivering results in line with the project plan milestones and deliverables
•keeping up with the latest scientific developments and integrating these in the project
•converting data and results of the sub-project into overview reports
•keeping traceable records of all results and analyses according to the lab journal procedure
•writing high-quality clearly written papers about the results obtained and getting these published in high–impact scientific journals
•completing a thesis after 4 years.

Job description
The research programme "From Food Aid to Food Security" is a collaboration of Disaster Studies and Law and Governance groups of Wageningen University and Bahir Dar University in Ethiopia. The programme aims to contribute to ongoing reforms in food aid and food security policies through studying the Productive Safety Net Programme (PSNP) and surrounding food security policies in Ethiopia. Since 1984, annually more than 5 million people have received food aid in this country, creating a situation of chronic food insecurity. The new Food Security Policy envisages to protect people against hunger and asset depletion, and lift them out of poverty. The research programme consists of four subprojects and analyzes the linkages between
policies implementation and livelihood strategies of vulnerable populations targeted by food security programmes. It is aimed to improve the performance of institutional actors, by providing insights on the working of policy and on the patterns of interaction between them. This will be ensured by an elaborate communication plan for stakeholder dialogue.
The PhD candidate will implement a PhD research concerning linkages between people's perceptions and practices to cope with food insecurity and food security interventions, with a special focus on the PNSP programme.
Questions to be addressed are:
a) What are local practices and attitudes of various groups in dealing with food insecurity?
b) How are these related to socio-economic differentiation and power?
c) What is the impact of interventions on food security and community relations?
d) What is the impact of food security interventions on household capacities for self-resilience to future shocks?
The project comprises 18 months of fieldwork in a highland region in Ethiopia.

PhD Micro cryo tips for cooling low-temperature electronic devices
PhD Micro cryo tips for cooling low-temperature electronic devices University of Twente Low-Temperature division Enschede, 7500 AE (Overijssel) , 38 hours per week
Job description
A PhD position is available at LT in a new project sponsored by the Dutch technology foundation STW. In this new project we want to develop multi-stage microcoolers that are able to reach even lower temperatures (~30K), and small sorption compressors [2] that can replace the pressurized gas bottles, and thus realize closed-cycle microcooling systems. The PhD should focus on the thermodynamics and design of multi-stage coolers, on the mechanism of clogging caused by water deposition, and measures to prevent this to occur [3], and on the development of a full package design
(including vacuum). In parallel, a post-doc researcher will be appointed in the project focusing on the utilization of results in two demonstrator pilots. In these pilots, LNAs will be cooled with a number of cooler tips fed by a single sorption compressor.
Requirements
Required education/skills: University Graduate

The Faculty of Science and Technology (700 faculty members, 1100 students) offers a range of bachelor and master courses (NanoTechnology, Applied Physics, Chemical Engineering and Technical Medicine). The faculty's research is organized in three of the university's interdisciplinary research institutes: MESA , BMTI, and IMPACT. These institutes increase the vitality of research by enabling collaboration between programs and disciplines, by providing shared facilities, and by attracting funding for joint projects. They also provide a conduit to industrial partners and help
in attracting new faculty.
In the Low-Temperature division (LT) of the University of Twente (UT) cryogenic cooling based on MEMS technology has been investigated for about a decade. In this research, we aim to realize extremely small coolers by means of micromachining technologies (MEMS) for reaching cryogenic temperatures, well below 120 K, i.e. 150 oC. There is a growing need for these microcoolers for cooling advanced electronics, such as low-noise amplifiers (LNAs), detectors, superconducting circuits, etc. In a previous project [1], we developed a miniature 100 K cooler in which gas is expanded that is supplied by a high-pressure gas bottle (see figure).
Conditions of employment
Estimated maximum salary per month: eur 2000 - 2500
Maximum salary amount in Euro's a month 2502

Announcing the Open Society Institute's Undergraduate Exchange Program
The Undergraduate Exchange Program (UEP) supports students from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia, Serbia, and Ukraine* in the United States for one year of non-degree academic studies. Applicants must currently be enrolled as a second-year student at a university in their home country to be eligible. *Applicants from Ukraine must be studying in the regions of
Dnipropetrovska, Zaporizhzhya or Donetsk to be eligible.
The program seeks to assist educational and civic development in Southeastern and Eastern Europe and Mongolia by exposing participants to a liberal-arts curriculum, different models of classroom instruction, community service work, and civil society–related programming. UEP combines the U.S. liberal arts academic experience with exposure to American social issues and civic development through involvement in community service–related work. The program aims to create lasting ties among participants and their American colleagues, thereby contributing to cultural understanding and tolerance.
Participants attend a university or college in the United States for one year. While in the United States , grantees agree to complete 25 hours per semester of community service work in an area of interest to them. At the end of the year, they are expected to return home to complete their degrees. Once back in their home country, grantees complete a community service project in their own community.

CfP: Europe as seen from the margins, Targoviste/Romania, 12-14.12.2007
Paper and Panel Proposals are called for the
Conference
Europe as viewed from the margins.
From World War I to Present
December 12-14, 2007
’Grigore Gafencu’ Study Center for the History of International Relations
Valahia University of Targoviste, Romania
The Conference represents the outcome of a research grant which has started in 2005 with the aim of investigating the images of Europe at its periphery. The leading idea of the grant has been to identify and underline some of the main angles proving the special importance of image-relationship force making history during the last two centuries based on certain differences existing between Eastern and Western Europe, still keeping them together, respectively, in some respects, as center and periphery. The project has been divided into three phases, each of which has approached a specific historical period: the long nineteenth century, the period from the First World War to the end of the Second World War and, finally, the most recent period following the world wars.
The conference coincides with the accession of two marginal countries Romania and Bulgaria to the European Union, which marks a new step towards removing the East-West division of the continent following the Cold War. As such, the aim of the conference will be to focus on the European perceptions of the nations which for most part of their history have been considered as peripheral to the European „mainland“ developments, nations ranging from the Baltic Sea to the Aegean Sea. We envisage to research these aspects from the various perspectives of different scientific disciplines and methods.
The organizers will offer the participants transportation from and to Bucharest Otopeni airport and will cover the within the limits of the budget the transportation inside Romania. Provided that the budget will afford it, the participants will be offered two nights free accommmodation.
The conference will feature panels in the following disciplinary and interdisciplinary areas:
History
Political Science
International Relations
