Postdoctoral positions in the Centre for Baltic and East European Studies, Södertörn University College

Södertörns högskola (Södertörn University College) was founded in 1996 and currently has 12 000 students and 750 employees, of which two thirds are academic staff. Our main site is in Flemingsberg where the Moa Building and the University Library can be found. There is an additional site in Haninge.

We conduct undergraduate and postgraduate education, and research in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Technology and Life Sciences. We cooperate closely with the Royal Institute of Technology, Karolinska Institutet and Karolinska University Hospital who share the campus in Flemingsberg.

We are now accepting applications for 3 postdoctoral positions To the Centre for Baltic and East European Studies (CBEES)

The Centre for Baltic and East European Studies (CBEES) coordinates research and doctoral studies focusing on the Baltic Sea Region and Eastern Europe, one of Södertörn University College's most important research areas. At CBEES, there are three prioritised research themes:

Knowledge and Sustainability: a multidisciplinary theme, extensive in scope including knowledge production, the environment and health.
Cultural Theory: Kosmopolis, Cultural Technologies and Cultural Public
Spheres: a research theme focusing on questions about media and identity, citizenship and exile; the relationship between technology and culture; and questions about cultural value and the cultural canon.

Society and the Political: political and social tensions in periods of social change.

We are now inviting application for three postdoctoral positions, one for each of these prioritised areas:
Knowledge and Sustainability (ref. no: 1342/22/2007)
Cultural Theory (ref. no.1343 /22/2207)
Society and the Political (ref. no. 1344/22/2007)

Areas of responsibility

The successful candidates will be expected to conduct and develop independent research within the framework of the research themes at CBEES by organising conferences and seminars, and presenting their own research nationally and internationally.

The successful candidates will work in a research environment focusing on the Baltic Sea Region and including professors, research leaders, staff involved in research projects and doctoral students. The environment is multidisciplinary and multicultural.

The posts comprise 75% independent research and 25% administrative duties in connection with the research themes, as well as of a general nature.

Qualifications

To be qualified for the advertised posts, candidates will be expected to have taken a Swedish doctorate or an equivalent examination from another country. Ideally, the doctorate should have been completed no more than three years prior to the closing application date for the postdoctoral positions.

Candidates, who have taken their doctorate more than three years before the closing application date, may be considered if there are extenuating circumstances. Such circumstances may include time taken out for illness, military service, trade union assignments, assignments within student organisations, parental leave and suchlike.

Selection criteria

In the selection process, a candidate's research skills will be considered to be of particular merit. In addition, the following criteria, in the following order, have been determined as particularly relevant for the advertised posts:
- Proven experience of research into the Baltic Sea Region and Eastern Europe.
- Proven experience of research in a subject/field of relevance to CBEES.
- The quality of the research plan and its relevance to the specialisation.
- Administrative skills and the ability to work in a team.
- Ability to create local, national and international partnerships.

Terms of employment

The appointment is fixed term and full-time for a period of two years. The appointment is expected to commence on 1 September 2008.

Application procedure
The following appendices should be submitted with the application:
Research plan (5-8 pages).
CV/academic merits.
Publications list.
Doctoral thesis.
The applicant should not submit information that has not been requested, e.g. references.
The research plan must include details of:
Relevance to the specific research theme.
Details of the research that is to be conducted during the period of employment.
The theory, method and material to be used in the research.
Prior research.
Relevance to CBEES and the research field in general.
It should be recorded in the application, if the intended research involves participation in, or links with international research networks.
The application may be submitted in English or Swedish.
We require three copies of the application. Cited publications will be required to be submitted at a later stage. If you intend to complement your application at a later date, this must be stated in the application. If this arrives later than one week after the application deadline, your application will not be considered.

Please note that one copy of all documents will be kept by the university college for a period of two years from the date a decision is made about the appointment, in accordance with a directive from the National Archives. This does not apply to appendices that have been printed or published in another way.
