The ASTRA research group (http://www.it.uu.se/research/group/astra) in Uppsala is concerned with both the theory and the practice of constraint programming.
On the theoretical side, we currently address research issues in modelling, symmetry detection and breaking, local search, and tractability. On the practical side, we apply constraint technology in an ever-increasing range of real-world applications, such as air-traffic management, computational biology, computational finance, rostering, scheduling, and time-tabling. Real-world constraints and data sets often make it necessary to develop new constraint solution techniques.
The position is not tied to any on-going project, so the actual doctoral research topic will be defined during the first year, based on the group's current priorities and the student's skills and preferences. The topics above are indicative.
Applicants should have a solid background in algorithms, data structures, artificial intelligence, and discrete mathematics, especially combinatorics, graph theory, and logic. The applicant should have at least an undergraduate degree. Applicants who will finish their degree during spring/summer 2008 are also welcome to apply. Good communication skills in oral and written English are required.
The PhD position is for a maximum of five years and includes departmental duties at a level of at most 20% (typically teaching). Further information: http://www.teknat.uu.se and http://www.it.uu.se.
Uppsala University is striving to achieve a more equal gender balance and female candidates are particularly invited to apply.
Applications should include a brief description of research interests and past experience, a CV, copies of, where appropriate, degree diplomas and grade certificates, a copy of the graduation project (or a draft thereof), and other relevant documents. Candidates should provide contact information to at least three referees.
