PhD student in Hydrology with specialization in global water-balance modelling, Uppsala University, Sweden

At the Department of Earth Sciences, Programme for Air, Water, and Landscape Sciences. Starting date as soon as possible

The lacking knowledge of water resources at global and continental scales have gradually come into focus because of water shortage, trans-boundary water problems, flows of virtual water, and variations in the global climate. Research on this is carried out in the research group for Surface Water Hydrology and Climate presently consisting of five professors (of which two guest professors, Chong-yu Xu in Oslo and Keith Beven in Lancaster) and five PhD students.

Work description: The PhD student will work in the project ”Modelling Climate Effects on Global-Scale Water Balance” funded by FORMAS (The Swedish Research Council for Environment, Agricultural Sciences and Spatial Planning). In the project, where Uppsala, Göteborg, and Oslo Universities cooperate, we work with development of the global water-balance model WASMOD-M. A key question is the estimation of parameter values in a globally consistent manner from available land-surface data. This will be investigated through regional studies in, e.g., parts of China and the Baltic-Sea basin. Another question deals with downscaling of climate variables.

The holder of a PhD-student position shall primarily devote her/his time to own research studies. Other departmental work, such as educational or administrative can be part of position (max 20%).

Eligibility: The applicant must have a university degree in hydrology (or equivalent). Experiences in numerical modelling, geographical information systems and remote-sensing analysis are qualifying. You should be interested in informing other people about your work and cooperative ability is important. In order to take part in departmental life you are expected to know Swedish or learn it within two years.

The applicant must be eligible for PhD studies. Priority is given to those who are deemed to show the greatest aptitude for a successful completion of graduate studies and ability to develop the project. The position is 4 years with extension up to 5 years depending on the degree of departmental work. Local guidelines determine the salary.

The application must include CV, copies of exams and list of courses including the grades obtained, a copy of the undergraduate thesis (or a draft thereof), as well as names of two reference persons.
