Invitation: 15th annual SPUSA Writing Contest
The Society of Friends of the U.S.A (SPUSA) Education Center, located in downtown Prague, Czech Republic, proudly invites all young writers to submit original pieces of writing to the 15th annual SPUSA Writing Contest. This year's topic is: COLOURS. Submissions in poetry or prose will be accepted. We kindly ask that you please announce this contest to all interested educators and young writers.
SPUSA Writing Contest
With the support of the US Embassy in Prague and recommendations from the Minister of Education and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, the SPUSA Writing Contest aims to encourage young writers of English. The contest has previously only been open to non-native speakers of English. The prizes from the non-native speaker category include the opportunity to study for two weeks at IH Newcastle in England and a chance to study at the Prague Summer Program at Charles University. Now, for only the second year, we have opened a native speaker category. The writers must be between the ages of 18 and 26. Although most of our participants are students, this is not a requirement. The winner of the native speaker category will receive a month's stay in Prague (with paid food and lodging)
which includes an opportunity to attend the Prague Summer Program at Charles University and free Czech lessons. I have enclosed a copy of this year's flier. You can also get more information at www.spusa.cz. Just click on the "competition" button.
A Brief History
SPUSA Education Center is a non-profit organization continuing a tradition of friendship and cooperation between the Czech and Slovak Republics and the U.S.A.. SPUSA was established after World War II in 1946 but was soon abolished when the Communists took power in 1948. However, SPUSA still existed as an underground organization during those repressive times. It was immediately re-established in 1989 and has been successfully operating ever since.
Today
The SPUSA Education Center remains alive with activity these days. We offer English and other language courses to the public as well as showing free movies in English as part of our Movie Monday series. We also encourage the public to attend cultural events at the American Embassy in Prague, specifically, writing seminars with the esteemed Writers in Residence. We sponsor a Literature Club which continues to grow each year. SPUSA teachers are also successfully involved in theater, music, poetry, and literature outside of the classroom. In general, SPUSA Education Center serves as a creative nexus in Prague where people can meet, discuss, and learn.
We hope that your interest turns into participation.
