Call for Papers for Advanced Research Workshop, "Afghanistan is close to us!"

Jointly organized by North Atlantic Integrations Promotion Organization (Zagreb, Croatia) and the Centre for Conflict and Peace Studies (Kabul, Afghanistan); Sponsored by NATO Science for Peace and Security (NATO HQ, Brussels, Belgium); From May18 th to 20th 2010, three days workshop in Zagreb, Croatia.

With this Workshop, we seek to draw together scholars and experts in order to gather research and surveys on the development of the future prospects for security in Afghanistan and on the improvement of communications with the public in ISAF member countries.

Participants will attend two sessions, each with three to four panels.

First session: "Afghanistan Today, Afghanistan Tomorrow" will include papers focused on current and future developments of national and local policies (particularly those aimed at national reconciliation and the formation of a national identity), security issues, economic infrastructure (especially the affects of privatization concerning schools, hospitals and other civil society services juxtaposed to government services) problems of parallel economy of illegal trafficking of substances, arms, goods and persons and infrastructural reconstruction, work of non-governmental sector and impacts of international organizations on Afghan society, politics and security.

Additionally, we would welcome papers on the progress and challenges of multilateral peace-building in Afghanistan since 2001 with particular focus on the salience of-ethnicity, creation of sustainable livelihoods, the issue of corruption and lack of coordination/communication at both the national and international levels, sustainable local/provincial/state capacity building initiatives and the status of women in the domestic/labor/education environment.

Second session: "Communicating about Afghanistan" is focused on public communication in ISAF countries. Papers should focus on ways of raising awareness and support for ISAF troops and civilians working in Afghanistan, on use of mainstream, alternative and social media, the roles of public opinion makers and overall public discourse, as well as changing negative impacts of media. Specific roles of the state, media and civil society, of international organizations and aid foundations are also in the focus of this session.

We welcome papers within political science, political economy and international relations, journalism, communication and public relations, whilst being open to papers on these themes in cognate disciplines.

We seek papers that focus very specifically on the topic with constructive summaries. All applicants can apply for one session. Comparative analysis and single case studies are welcomed.

Those interested in submitting papers are requested to send an abstract of 400 words in .doc, .rtf, .pdf, .docx, or .txt format by email to: vedran.obucina@opsa.hr. The abstract should include the title, paper summary and the name and affiliation of the author. The deadline for abstracts is March 29, 2010. The acceptance of paper proposals will be communicated by April 5, 2010. Those accepted will have to prepare a 20 minutes paper presentation. Papers have to be submitted in English which is also the official language of the conference.
