European College of Liberal Arts Berlin
International Summer University 2007
Call for Applications

The European College of Liberal Arts (ECLA) in Berlin announces its eighth International Summer University: “The Mantle of the Prophet: Demons, Saints
and Terrorists” which takes place from July 13th to August 24th 2007.

The key text is Dostoyevsky’s Demons, a novel based on a real case of political murder and which, of all the author’s works, deserves to be characterised as prophetic. During the six weeks, students and faculty will explore some of its many moral, religious and political implications including the historical and metaphysical roots of terrorism, the “death of God” and the “deification of man”. In addressing these issues, they will discuss a variety of philosophical, literary and historical texts including such authors as Paul Auster (Leviathan), Albert Camus (The Stranger, Rebellion), Blaise Pascal (Pensées), Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels (The Communist Manifesto), Serguei Nechaev (The Catechism of a Revolutionary) ,
Friedrich Nietzsche (selections) , Plato (Gorgias) and Joseph Conrad (The Secret Agent). The text-based core component of the curriculum is complemented by the visual (films, museum visits, art history) and the Explore Berlin components (excursions in and around Berlin).

Hallmarks of the programme are: small seminar groups, weekly essays, individual attention in one-to-one tutorials, and a close-knit international community of students and faculty that resides on campus. Students receive six credits in Interdisciplinary Studies.

A comprehensive programme fee of 4500 Euros covers tuition, campus accommodation, meals, books on loan, reading materials, class excursions, emergency medical insurance, and public transportation within Berlin. Need-based financial aid is available. ECLA is committed to helping all qualified applicants to enrol, regardless of their financial means. Students receive six credits in Interdisciplinary Studies.

The application deadline is April 3rd 2007, and applicants will be notified by April 30th 2007. Please check our website www.ecla.de for further details or contact the Admissions Office at admissions@ecla. de
