Engineering Doctorate (EngD) Studentship in Environmental Technology, University of Surrey

Engineering Doctorate (EngD) in Environmental Technology Improving the assessment of the health aspects of odour exposure within industrial conurbations and industry sectors School of Engineering

The EngD is a 4-year postgraduate studentship conducting research on the sponsor's project whilst based at the sponsor's premises. It is EPSRC's* premier research qualification and the programme includes 15 short courses of 1 week's duration, held at the University. The EngD Research Engineer appointed will receive a stipend in excess of £18,000 funded by EPSRC* and the sponsor. Stipends are tax free.

A studentship is available with the Chemical Hazards & Poisons Division (London) of the Health Protection Agency. The successful candidate will commence their EngD in March 2007. The deadline for applications is *12 January 2007* and interviews will be held later that month.

The Research Engineer will be based with Chemical Hazards & Poisons Division (London) of the Health Protection Agency in Holborn, London. The overall aim is to develop methodologies for the determination of population exposure to chemicals involved in, or associated with, odour complaints. The research will include analysis of both monitoring and modelling techniques through case studies and will involve working closely with local authorities who deal with this topic as a regulatory nuisance issue. This will lead to new approaches to community level hazard assessment in relation to odour.

We are looking for a suitably qualified and well-rounded graduate who can conduct research and meet demanding deadlines whilst working in a busy organisation. The ideal candidate will be a broad, innovative thinker with good communication skills and an outgoing personality.

In terms of academic qualifications, applicants will need to have a first degree (first class or upper second only) or MSc, which is likely to be in one of main engineering or science disciplines. A willingness to develop knowledge in the following specialist areas will be essential: atmospheric dispersion, the use of GIS, toxicology, public health, environmental science and epidemiology will be essential.
