Eng.D Studentship in Biochemical of Human Scalp - Cranfield University

4 year Eng.D Studentship (October 2006) Human Scalp - Biochemical profile

*Focus of the Project:
*This Eng. D research programme will develop novel methods for undertaking biochemical profiles of key biochemical markers of relevance to common scalp conditions such as dandruff and inflammation. The project will be supported by a leading international manufacturer of a wide range of hygiene and personal care products.

*Background:
*Several diseases and conditions of the human scalp are characterised by perturbations in skin health (e.g. scaling, itching) and by changes in the biochemical species found in the outermost cellular layer of the skin, known as the stratum corneum.

A simple and convenient way to monitor these is to collect buffer washings from the scalp which can be subsequently subjected to a range of laboratory analytical procedures for the biomarkers of interest (e.g. amino acids, lipids, enzymes, cytokines... ).

Current laboratory analytical procedures are labour intensive and time-consuming, however, such that sample analysis is often a rate limiting step in the procedure. Novel analytical procedures are therefore required to facilitate application of the buffer washing methodology. This is the objective for the proposed project.

*EngD Postgraduate Degrees*: An Eng.D. is the flagship research degree of the EPSRC (Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council). An Eng.D. runs over 4 years and comprises 3 year's research time together with approximately 12 months taught content taken from the Cranfield executive MBA programme.

*Stipend:
*This EPSRC Eng.D position will attract a total stipend (EPSRC funding and industrial sponsorship) of *£17,150* p.a.
