PhD position at RWTH Aachen Univ (Germany)

At the Department of Geography of RWTH Aachen University, Germany, a PhD position is available for period of 3 years starting January 2007. The successful applicant will be working within a research project entitled "Scale-consistent two-way coupling of land-surface and atmospheric models". The project is part of the Transregional Collaborative Research Centre ("Sonderforschungsb ereich") "Patterns in Soil-Vegetation- Atmosphere Systems: monitoring, modelling and data assimilation" funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Research will be carried out in close co-operation with the Department of Meteorology of the University of Bonn.

Applications are welcome from Graduates that hold a degree in Geography, Geosciences, Meteorology or related fields. Graduates from Computer Sciences will also be considered. The position requires a sound background in climatology and physical geography and strong computational and programming skills. Experience with fuzzy approaches using neural networks would be of great advantage. Also, experience with the deployment and operation of meteorological instrumentation in the field (in the vicinity of the City of Aachen) is considered as necessary. The working language will be either German or English.

Payment will be according to the German public service payment system at level "BAT IIa/2".
