PhD Studentship The quality of the assessment of the side effects of antipsychotic medication in clinical psychiatric practice

A three-year, full-time PhD studentship is available in the Department of Psychological Medicine, Division of Neuroscience and Mental Health, to investigate the quality of the assessment of side effects of antipsychotic medication in clinical psychiatric practice. The key aims of the project will be to conduct a systematic review of the relevant literature in respect of the assessment of antipsychotic side effects, addressing issues including the range and clinical utility of rating scales used, and the value of systematic assessment. In addition, qualitative work will explore current clinical practice around the monitoring and management of antipsychotic side effects.

The research will be carried out in collaboration with the national Prescribing Observatory for Mental Health (POMH-UK), under the supervision of Professor Thomas Barnes, Department of Psychological Medicine. It will be based at the Charing Cross Campus. The current stipend is £15,500 per annum in the first year, rising in years two and three, with fees paid (equivalent to the home/ EU full-time fee level).

Applicants should have or expect to be awarded a First class or Upper Second class honours degree in a relevant health-related discipline.
