Regina's Hope Medical Program

The Regina’s Hope Medical Program (RHMP) program is funded by The Kristyna M. Driehaus Foundation to offer a unique opportunity for students of medicine in the Czech Republic to gain clinical and research experience in state-of-the- art hospitals in Chicago, U.S.A.

The 2007 RHMP program is a collaboration of Northwestern University, Feinberg Medical School (Northwestern and Children’s Memorial hospitals) and the Charles University 2nd Medical Faculty (Motol Hospital). Students with a serious career interest in the field of pediatric hematology/oncology are encouraged to apply. The specific goal of the program is to provide a broad based experience in benign and malignant hematology as well as medical oncology through participating in inpatient and outpatient rounds with residents, fellows, and attending faculty. Special attention is given to developing the students’ awareness of ethical issues relating to patient care.

Selected students receive a short-term (4-6 weeks) training in a superb academic environment by working as part of a multidisciplinary team responsible for the management of complex patients with a variety of malignancies, including acute leukemia and lymphoma. Students are exposed to various treatment approaches, including stem cell transplantation. During each clinical shift, the supervising physicians directly observe the students’ skills and provide real-time, ongoing feedback.

Students are expected to:
1. Work full-time (40 hours a week).
2. Participate actively, under the supervision of a resident or faculty member of the department, in the evaluation and care of patients.
3. Demonstrate an initiative to learn and to work independently.
4. Attend the participating departments’ lecture series and conferences.
5. Work closely with the department director on selecting a research topic of interest and developing a written report and/or presentation that will be completed by the end of the training.
