Job description:

you will be part of the thematic group on Poverty & Well-being as an Institutional Process (PIP), one of four research groups at IOB. The PIP-group focuses on the analysis of institutional mechanisms of (re-)production of poverty and inequality, and on the policy and development processes that may support social dynamics of well-being and equality. Specific research and teaching themes of the group are: institutional theories of poverty and inequality; access to public services (education, health, social programmes, international aid interventions); the (deficient) functioning of product and financial markets; local collective action (i.e. related to natural resources, water, forests), and local administrative and political processes. Because of the analysis of local dynamics, there is also attention for (in particular qualitative and participatory) methods of micro-research and for the interaction between research and policy
you conduct research on globally contextualised local processes of (re)production of poverty and inequality; and on the opportunities for social, economic and political actors at different levels to influence these processes positively you are expected to acquire external funding (national and international)
you contribute to the policy advisory work of the thematic group and to sustain the institutional co-operation between IOB and its academic partners in the South (currently Congo-Kinshasa, Nicaragua, South Africa and Guatemala)
you teach in the Master programmes at the Institute, more particularly in methodological modules and in the module on “Local Institutions and Poverty Reduction”, to which the thematic group contributes. you participate in teaching initiatives organized by our academic partners in the South
you are a team player, performing tasks of a public goods nature at the level of the Institute and the University, and society at large.


Profile and requirements:

you hold a doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in development Sociology, Political science, Anthropology, Social geography, or (applied) Economics. Other Ph.D. holders will be considered provided they have relevant research experience
you can prove interest for and expertise in interdisciplinary research on actor-oriented analysis of social inequality and poverty and connected processes of economic, political and social change
you can prove teaching abilities
you have rich experience with local development processes in the South, and are able to undertake regular field visits, in co-operation with partners in the South
your knowledge of English is excellent, knowledge of French, Spanish or other relevant languages is an asset
you must acquire a working knowledge of Dutch at the latest one year after appointment.
We offer:

a full time position as ‘docent’ (level of Lecturer) or in a higher grade, commensurate with the experience and the academic qualifications
the appointment is initially for a period of at the most three years, after which it can become tenured depending on a favourable evaluation
the expected date of appointment is 1st April 2007.
