Experienced Researcher in imaging of environmental processes

The Department of Hydrogeology at the UFZ is offering a full – time research position (f/m) for the work within a collaborative project on ’Non-invasive imaging of the water dynamics in a soil plant groundwater system’. The overall background is environmental science of terrestrial systems in close contact to the atmosphere. The project will cover aspects of soil physics, hydrogeology, computational hydro systems, soil ecology and visualization.

Via neutron radiography, and with other non-invasive imaging methods such as X-ray CT, data sets of the water dynamics plant-soil-groundwater laboratory systems will be retrieved. The scientist will be in charge of the analysis and processing of images obtained from the experiments, which will be especially suited for mathematical modelling. Algorithms and tools shall be developed to quickly and accurately extract the desired quantities from the images, e.g. root structures, changes in water content and soil heterogeneities. The main duty will be to constitute an active interface between imaging experiments and numerical modelling. Also it is intended to feed processed images into the new 3-D visualization facility at the UFZ.

The position is for two years (prolongation not excluded).

Salary will be according to the EU remuneration for an experienced researcher and notably, Marie Curie Transfer of Knowledge eligibility criteria apply for candidates (see http://ec.europa.eu/research/fp6/mariecurie-actions/action/knowledge_en.html).

Women are explicitly encouraged to apply to increase their share in science and research.

Physically handicapped persons will be favoured if they are equally qualified.
Interested candidates should send complete application documents (curriculum vitae, list of publications, list of three potential referees) by January 31, 2007. However, applications will be accepted until the position is filled. For further information please contact Dr. Sascha Oswald (UFZ).
