Medicines Management, older patients and long term chronic health conditions.

The School of Pharmacy is offering a full time Research Studentship leading to the award of PhD to commence May 2007 in Medicines Management. The current level of the studentship is £12,000 per year for 3 years. The Studentship may also be considered on a part time basis over 4 years for an appropriate candidate. Fees and reasonable
research costs are also covered. You will work with a project team which is a collaboration between the School of Pharmacy and CRIPACC.

The Studentship is offered in the following area:

Medicines Management, older patients and chronic disease.

Applications are open to good honours graduates (social sciences, nursing and pharmacy) who wish to investigate the medication management service for older people in primary care with long term chronic disease.

Aims:

The study will explore the medication management service and support to older people within the newly formed East of England Strategic Health Authority in relation to chronic long term health conditions. To facilitate this aim the study will incorporate older people's family carers' where this is appropriate.

Objectives will be developed to:

Establish the extent of older people's knowledge-base of chronic disease health care services and medicines management issues within the SHA. Establish service needs with regard to chronic disease services including the clinical use of medicines and explore patient/carer views Identify how older people access such services (successes and barriers). Explore health professional' s views of older people's
perceived knowledge and use of the chronic disease services and their problems with medicines management.

Explore health professional' s views on access and barriers to the chronic disease services experienced by older people.

The study is open to both qualitative and quantitative methodologies.

OutcomesThe study will provide new insights for developing responsive primary healthcare and medicines management services within the community for older people suffering from long term chronic health conditions.

Applications from individuals who hold a relevant Master's degree would be desirable.
