Orientation in the U.S. Legal System
July 16 - July 27, 2007
The first US program designed to introduce foreign law students to the American legal system was conducted in the 1960's by the American Association of Law Schools with funding from the Ford Foundation. Since 1971 the program has been run by the International Law Institute. Now in its 37th year, the Orientation continues its original purpose of introducing foreign attorneys and law students to the American legal system.
The Orientation provides students with:
a.. an introduction to legal method and thought process of American law;
b.. knowledge of the basic institutions of the American legal system and their interrelationship;
c.. an initial exposure to major judicial doctrines central to American law;
d.. the basic analytic and research capabilities needed in the study of law;
e.. an opportunity to meet lawyers from the private and public sectors and see the practice and administration of law through observations at court;
f.. a period of adjustment to living and studying law in the United States.
Introduction to Legal English
July 2 - July 13, 2007
Now in its sixteenth year, Introduction to Legal English is an intensive language course that provides a foundation in legal terminology and language use for individuals whose first language is not English. The program is intended for law students and professionals who wish to enhance their knowledge of Anglo-American legal terms before joining an LL.M program or returning to private practice. Many of our students choose to take Introduction to Legal English in combination with the Orientation in the US Legal System and Workshop on Legal Research and Writing.
Legal Research and Writing
July 30 - August 3, 2007
This one-week workshop is designed for students entering an LL.M program in the fall semester of 2006. As an advanced follow-up course to the Introduction to Legal English and Orientation in the US Legal System or as a stand-alone specialized course, it introduces students to the skills they will need to succeed in legal research and writing assignments in their law school courses. The course emphasizes the use of plain language in both written and oral formats, the components of legal argument, and the reliance on judicial precedent in Common Law reasoning and statutory interpretation. Because many students entering an LL.M program have been trained in Civil Law, the primary goal of the workshop is to initiate students to the
fundamental differences in Common Law reasoning and language.
