Research Studentship, Target gene finding of STAT transcription factors

Applications are invited from students with a suitable qualification in biochemistry (or a related discipline) for a four-year BBSRC-funded studentship entitled “Target gene finding of STAT transcription factors”. STAT proteins are a family of signal transducers that respond to extracellular cytokine signals and convert them into altered transcription of specific target genes. The STATs thus are key regulators of innate immunity and cell growth. Surprisingly, several STATs select identical DNA binding-sites in vitro, yet their range of functional target genes are distinct and non-overlapping. However, information concerning the natural binding sites in chromatin is currently not available. The successful student will therefore use chromatin-immunoprecipitation and microarray hybridization to identify and compare STAT1 and STAT3 binding sites on a genomewide scale. The study includes target verification by RT-PCR and western blotting.

This project will be supervised by Dr Uwe Vinkemeier who will be transferring to the University of Nottingham in June 2007.

The successful student will be registered for a PhD (MPhil in the first instance) and will be affiliated with the Centre for Biochemistry and Cell Biology.

This studentship is available for a period of four years and provides a postgraduate stipend of £12,600 per annum.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Dr Vinkemeier, Email: vinkemeier@fmp-berlin.de.

Applications, with a detailed CV and the names and addresses of three referees, should be sent to Dr U Vinkemeier, Leibniz-Institut für Molekulare Pharmakologie, Robert-Rössle-Str. 10, 13125 Berlin.
